Welcome to Fashion Bytes, a cheat sheet for your favorite runway designers. From style inspirations to behind-the-scenes scoops, here’s everything worth knowing at New York Fashion Week Spring 2018.
The brand: Self-Portrait
The history: This line is only two years old, but it’s already a fashion girl favorite thanks to fans like Reese Witherspoon and innovative twists on old classics. Think little black dresses redone in square-stitched lace, teal velvet blazers and black netted shoulders on sweet floral tops—wardrobe staples that Self-Portrait makes special.
The designer: Malaysian-born Han Chong co-founded the online fashion collective Three Floor before starting his solo mission in 2014. He’s based in London, where he attended Central Saint Martins. (He chose the school because one of his idols, Alexander McQueen, went there.)
The show: It was 10am on a Saturday, and the fashion crowd needed a wakeup call. This show was it: off-the-shoulder silk ruffles, bright yellow pleated gowns, and slim suits the color of Greek island seas—plus a sweet black-and-ivory star print, which is already trending for 2018. (Thanks, Monse!)
The f-row: Actresses Rachel Bilson, Jaime King and Maggie Gyllenhaal sat together, while Instagram starlets Danielle Bernstein, Natalie Joos and Chriselle Lim perched on the other side of the runway. Street-style photographers showed up early despite last night’s many afterparties because they knew how good the scene would be.
The verdict: It may seem like an artistic vision, but this show was a smart move, too. With so many different prints, shapes and textures, all kinds of fashion fans can get into this cool label.
