New Year’s Eve Dresses | The Realest

dlp

Why should models have all the fun? Each month we’re finding a “real woman”—i.e., of any shape and size—and giving her the model treatment in The Realest. We bring the wardrobe, stylist, photographer and blog editor—she brings her anything-but-one-size-fits-all personality and style—and we all head out on location for an IRL photo shoot to showcase our monthly Dress Spotlight.

For this month’s installment, we met up with the wonderful Ribicca at a beautiful home in Portage Bay. We popped the cork on a bottle of champagne, had a mini dance party to some Diana Ross and generally partied like it was already 2016.

On her style: “Describing my style is one of the hardest things for me to do. I do not like putting myself in a box since I like to continually elevate my style. If I had to choose, I would say my style is a mixture of trendy and sophisticated. I am a huge fan of prints thus my closet has a lot of personality. However, I also have days where I want to wear monochrome greys and nudes.”

On dressing for a party: “It depends on the season. During spring and summer the process is much easier since it’s not a must to have a layering piece. Fall and winter can be a little tricky since you have to find a happy medium between warm and sexy.

“For me, it always starts with the shoes. Once I pick out the shoes, I decide on the rest of my outfit—keeping in mind the occasion. Necklaces and bracelets are my go-to accessories, so I always add them as a third piece. I stick to studs when it comes to earrings since large ones overpower my outfit when my hair is in its natural state. I keep my makeup light for the most part but I like to wear bold, matte lip stains.”

Ribicca-2On travel as inspiration: “Traveling is an eye-opening and fulfilling experience. Immersing myself in fashion capitals like Milan, London, Paris, Stockholm and Tokyo has inspired me to find ways to push the envelope in my personal style. After walking through the streets of Ginza, Harajuku and Shibuya in Tokyo, I was truly encouraged to take more risks in fashion. I was amazed at how they made the most outrageous combination of prints and patterns so edgy. I also enjoy the varied shopping experiences I have overseas.

As a person who considers herself a great bargain shopper, nothing beats the vibrant flea markets of India, Morocco and the Philippines. My most treasured items in my closet are the little things I picked up from the markets abroad.”

Ribicca-12On people as inspiration: “Seeing the resilience in people truly inspires me. I have been fortunate enough to meet accomplished individuals that have given me a new insight into the definition of success. It is even more inspiring to find powerful women who have evolved the status quo and established their rightful place in society.”

Her happy place: “My happiest place is when I am on a flight to a new destination. There is no book or movie that encapsulates the complete story of a country. One of the hardest things I realized after moving to the U.S. was all the misconceptions people had of my place of origin, which is Ethiopia. Many times our knowledge of the rest of the world is limited to the information provided in our textbooks and media outlets, which in my opinion is incomplete. Through my voyages, I have been able to complete these stories for myself.”

Denim: Fashion’s Frontier Opens at the Museum at FIT

Roberto Cavalli, ensemble, embroidered denim, spring 2003, Italy, gift of Roberto Cavalli. Photograph courtesy of The Museum at FITOnce the uniform of gold prospectors and laborers, denim has become the go-to workday and weekend getup for most everyone. Anthropologist Danny Miller estimated that about half the world’s population—including countries as diverse as Turkey, India and Brazil—wears dungarees on any given day. Even the runways the last two seasons have swelled with oceans of indigo.

Just as denim is having yet another moment, the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology is opening an exhibit (beginning December 1) examining the fabric’s place in fashion history. With over 70 denim constructions from the museum’s collection, Denim: Fashion’s Frontier takes a long (almost two centuries) look at the ways and reasons jeans have wooed the world. Featuring denim jumpsuits worn in factories during World War II and Tom Ford’s notoriously expensive plumed pair for Gucci, Denim shows how this is truly the fabric of our diverse lives.

Photograph courtesy of The Museum at FIT.Beginning with 1830s work wear that predates Levi Straus & Co., FIT’s exhibit shows how a glorification of the American West and Hollywood’s bad boys introduced millions to the appeal of the fabric’s durability and comfort. As the workingman’s pants evolved to become a staple of the casual wardrobe during World War II, denim began to surface in women’s fashion. In the 50s, denim’s association with rebels resurfaced, and the jean jacket entered popular culture. Naturally the countercultural movements of the 60s and 70s embraced the fabric for its relaxed, democratic qualities, and so subsequently did haute couture designers like Yves Saint Laurent. The 80s saw the emergence of designer denim in labels like Fiorucci and Calvin Klein. Signature washes and dyes also became prevalent.

FIT also acquired several denim pieces from the 2014 and 2015 collections of Dries van Noten, rag & bone and Chloé, bringing the exhibit up to the present.

Mind-Skin Guru (and Chanel Advisor) Dr. Amy Wechsler on the Importance of Sleep, Sex and Sunscreen

Chanel-Amy-Wechsler

Chanel’s new oil-free moisturizer for sensitive skin, La Solution 10 de Chanel, has arrived at Nordstrom, and the reviews are rave. We spoke with Dr. Amy Wechsler, who collaborated with the iconic fashion house on their latest offering, about the product and why it’s so revolutionary for sensitive skin—and what we can do at home to make our own skin shine.

You are board certified in both dermatology and psychiatry. How has that shaped your philosophy and practice?
A lot of patients come for help with their appearance and end up talking about life issues. Skin care can be so emotional. So much of how we think affects how we look, and vice versa. I’ve always believed in a very strong mind-body, and, more specifically, mind-skin connection. There are so many interconnections between the brain and the skin in terms of circulation, neurotransmitters and hormones. Anything that affects our mind, in either a positive or negative way, will definitely affect our skin.

You speak to what you call the mind-beauty connection both in your practice and in your book (of the same title). What are a few small things a woman can do with that mind-body connection to enhance her natural beauty?

Sleep! So many of us are burning the candle at both ends, and sleep deprivation has become the new normal. It causes stress, which can damage the skin and worsen skin conditions. While you sleep, your body repairs the damage of the day, and interrupting sleep by staying up too late or waking up in the middle of the night, slows down cell renewal. When your sleep is synchronized with your body’s natural rhythms, you’ll look better and feel younger.

There are lots of things other than sleep that are anti-stress and anti-inflammatory: exercise, sex, consuming anti-oxidants like red wine and dark chocolate. Seeing a friend face-to-face is anti-stress; getting out and looking at trees and nature for a few minutes a day breaks that stress cycle; deep breathing techniques. It’s different for everyone. For some people it’s yoga, for others it’s music, reading, travel, relationships, going out with your kids.

You’ve said before that it’s important to have an every-day skincare ritual. What, in general, do you recommend?

In the morning, use a gentle, mild cleanser. Follow with moisturizer and sunscreen, I recommend La Solution 10 de Chanel and Chanel UV Essentiel SPF 50. These are great options for people with sensitive skin. Solution 10 is particularly great because you can also use it around the eyes.

In the evening, use an eye makeup remover and then wash your face with a gentle cleanser. I always use a really gentle, mild cleanser. A cleanser should remove the dirt of the day without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Your skin should never be squeaky clean. If it’s squeaky clean, then you’ve removed the good oils too, which isn’t healthy for skin. Follow with your moisturizer, I recommend moisturizing day and night.

As the consulting dermatologist for Chanel, you collaborated with the brand to create the new La Solution 10 formulation. What were your goals at the outset and and whom did you have in mind for its use?
I’ve had sensitive skin my whole life, and many of my patients struggle with sensitive skin. On a trip to the CHANEL research facility in Pantin, France, I met Christian Mahe, the head of CHANEL R&T and his amazing team of scientists and product formulators. I asked Christian if there was a way to create a skincare product to soothe skin, decrease inflammation and defend against sensitivity. This product would be fragrance-free, alcohol-free, and oil-free with lasting hydration that still felt luxurious. There really aren’t any luxury moisturizers for sensitive skin! Amazingly the Chanel Research and Technology team got excited about this idea and before I knew it, I was welcomed into a dialogue on how to develop a new CHANEL skincare product.

True to its name, La Solution 10 is comprised of just ten ingredients. Was it difficult to pare down to so few, and what are the benefits of the less-is-more approach?

It takes a special kind of skincare product to address sensitive skin. Christian and I agreed that we should limit the number of ingredients to minimize the risk of a sensitive skin reaction. We agreed that each ingredient should have a purpose. We were minimalists looking to achieve maximum efficacy. In fact, it took over 117 attempts before the right formula was achieved. There were times when we had to throw out all the work we had done and begin again. We were uncompromising and committed to making the best product possible.

Over the years and clinical trials that have been conducted to perfect La Solution 10, what, hands down, are the most impressive results and comments you’ve seen and received?

Pollution strongly increases oxidative stress and accentuates skin sensitivity. We tested Solution 10 during the heaviest month of pollution in Beijing, and 65% of women found their skin was less sensitive to pollution right away, and after one month, 79% felt their skin was less sensitive. The silver needle tea reduces oxidative stress as it has powerful broad anti-oxidant activity. It has a high concentration of polyphenols—2x that in green tea and 10x more than other teas.

Short of needles or plastic surgery, what are the top five things a woman can do to improve the health and look of her skin right now?

Get enough sleep, exercise, use sunscreen, stick to a skincare routine and never smoke cigarettes.

Gifted Giver: Interior Designer Brian Paquette | Pop-In@Nordstrom X Opening Ceremony Holiday Shop

brian_Paquette_nordstrom

For the second season in a row, we’re counting down the crucial pre-Christmas shopping days with a series called Gifted Givers, in which friends old and new share their thoughts on stylishly spirited giving and receiving. New this year: the Pop-In@Nordstrom X Opening Ceremony Holiday Shop edition.

brian_Paquette
If Brian Paquette, principal designer of Seattle-based Brian Paquette Interiors, could only handpick all of the elements of every room … well, on the entire planet … we’re pretty positive global productivity, happiness and general good vibes would skyrocket. The Newport, Rhode Island, native has a knack for layering steel with coal, surprise with serenity, and pop culture with classic ideas about what makes a room—and a home, and a workplace—a haven. Can’t fathom gutting the whole joint and starting from scratch right yet? Check out Paquette’s new textile and wallpaper line, and then check out his spot-on thoughts about cashmere, candlesticks and wrapping them all up in style.

The Thread: What stands out as the best gift you’ve ever given?
Paquette: Travel and experience; being able to take a loved one along with you to experience a new place and culture is the best.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
Anything cashmere—recently in the form of a beautiful but simple blanket from James Perse. Also: new scents, whether candles or room sprays for different seasons. I like to mix them up throughout the year to evoke different sense memories.

Do you have a holiday shopping strategy?
Never—it seems to be too much of a chore that way, it should be organic and inspired.

What’s the weirdest or most extreme thing you’ve ever done to create or secure the perfect gift?
A friend of mine was over for dinner this past summer and could not stop talking about the incense I was burning, Oulan Bator by Astier de Villatte. His birthday was later that week and I knew it would be perfect, however very few places in the states, let alone Seattle, carry it so I had to pay an arm and a leg to have it overnighted from LA. It was worth it to have his memories of that great dinner with friends live on.

What is “the perfect gift,” anyway?
The perfect gift is time … time spent with someone, time saved for someone.

What makes for the ultimate in giving or receiving?
Like designing a room, no detail should be left unfinished; the wrapping and card and note should be as heartfelt as the gift itself.

What would you get for a culinarily oriented friend or family type?
I am not a good cook by any stretch of the imagination—and I value those who are to no end. What I can do however is set one hell of a table, so I would get them some great new linens, serving dishes and candlesticks.

Feel free to allow us to alert your friends and family in this very public format: what would you love to unwrap this year?
Books, books and more books. I can never have enough visual stimulation from fine arts, to travel and fashion to architecture.

Get Invited Back: Bright Ideas for Host and Hostess Gifts

Between Facebook, family and the office, odds are that right now you’ve got holiday-party invites coming at you from all angles. After all, ’tis the season for chitchat and cheese trays. But once you’ve squared away all your RSVPs and made any requisite travel plans, it’s a good time to consider what you’re bringing to the table—on all fronts. While your fetching self is unquestionably appreciated, a hostess gift is a gracious way to thank the party-thrower for a shindig well done.

Hostess Gifts Ideas

Of course, not every social gathering is equal. If you’re headed to the in-laws for an extended visit to celebrate Thanksgiving, Hanukkah or Christmas, a bottle of wine probably won’t do. For any situation that requires overnight accommodations, a personal touch conveys serious gratitude (and helps secure next year’s invite).

SPARQ custom whiskey rocksSend the right message to hospitable cocktail and coffee enthusiasts by presenting these little soapstone rocks upon your arrival. In hot or cold liquids, SPARQ’s personalized whiskey rocks never melt, so beverage flavors remain unscathed.

It’s likely someone scrubbed a tub or two to prep for your visit. Repay the deed in kind with indulgent goat milk bubble bath from Blithe and Bonny. Made in California, the heavenly scented sulfate-free suds come in citrus, lavender, eucalyptus or herb.

A premium candle is another fragrant gift packed with plenty of post-holiday R&R potential. Developed by high-end perfumers, the entire NEST Fragrances line is gifting foolproof. Plus, the packaging is so pretty you can skip the wrapping paper.

Nordstrom Potomac slippers
Cushy slippers are a safe bet for any host who’s been running around the house all weekend. Our top-rated Potomac moccasins for men are lined with faux shearling and ring in at $39.95—a lot less than a room at the Holiday Inn.

Got a serious dinner soirée on the books? One-of-a-kind parties deserve a thank you that’s equally unique. Impress your extravagant host with a family of scented origami horses from the house of Hermès.

Cuddle Up' faux fur wine bagIf you’re party-hopping around town and simply swinging by for a swig of bubbly, wrap up a bottle of wine in this ridiculously soft faux-fur bag that the host can reuse on picnics or subzero sleigh rides.

And what’s the holiday season without some on-the-fly festivities? To be safe, snag one of these diptyque gift sets and hand out the decadent French-made candles to your impromptu hosts. Your efforts will not go unnoticed.

Lancôme’s Le Teint Particulier Custom-Made Makeup Launches Exclusively to Nordstrom

Lancome Le Teint Particulier

We like being the first to try new things. We’re what marketing folks call early adopters. That’s especially true when it comes to tech and cosmetics.

So we’ve found a winning mashup when it comes to makeup.

Nordstrom Del Amo Fashion Center and Nordstrom Downtown Seattle are the first two locations in the world to have Lancôme’s Le Teint Particulier technology. This revolutionary system begins with a facial scan that constructs your exact skin tone from a combination of more than 20,000 pigments. Once uploaded to a computer, your unique complexion ID is built—it’s like Mom always said, “You’re special.” Indeed, the match is uncanny.

Lancome Le Teint Particulier technology

But it doesn’t need to be definitive. Lancôme beauty advisors will help you decide if you want to go a bit warmer or cooler, lighter or darker. You also choose the amount of coverage: sheer, medium or full. Once you’ve determined your mixture, the machine gets to work, layering in shades, blending, shaking and dispensing. (It’s a very industrious little bot.) The whole process takes about a half hour.

The foundation’s formula is also new to Lancôme. Long-wearing and fragrance- and paraben-free, Le Teint Particulier also features 24-hour hydration and micro-fill technology so you’ll look glowing and flawless.

This gadget might also be a time machine.

Garance Doré on Androgynous Dressing and Picking Clothes for Paris vs. New York

Garance DoréHaving wowed the fashion world and won hundreds of thousands of fans with her fetching illustrations, innovative street-style snaps and charming writing, blog doyenne Garance Doré seemed to solidify the legitimacy of the entire blogosphere with her acceptance of the 2012 CFDA Media Award—the first ever given to a blogger.

In addition to running her much beloved site, Doré has pivoted her considerable creative might into tackling projects that run the gamut from YouTube maven to book author and—finally!—designer of a Nordstrom-exclusive capsule collection from Vince.

We chatted with her about the best way to style a turtleneck, the beauty of gender-neutral dressing and why grey skinny jeans bring out her Parisian side.

Your style embodies a perfectly combined sense of Parisian chic and New York cool. What item in your closet would you say most represents your French identity? Your New York identity?

My French identity to me are my grey skinny jeans, I don’t know why but each time I wear them, I feel very Parisian. My New York identity…is probably my giant winter parka, something I never needed anywhere else I’ve lived. It gets so cold here!

Garance Doré

How did you your design collaboration with Vince come about?

I think fashion is really about the way we edit our wardrobe, so we thought it could be fun to show what would be my edit of the Vince “closet!”

You built this collection by picking some of your favorite Vince pieces and giving them the Garance treatment. How did you go about selecting the pieces, and what would you say is so quintessentially ‘Garance’ about the changes you made?

I think that separate pieces are just the start, and the way we put them together is our expression and our creativity. Vince makes clothes that function really well together, so styling them becomes really fun!

What’s very me is the restrained palette and the simplicity.

Garance Doré and Vince With an ongoing move toward androgyny in dressing (Saint Laurent’s Resort collection being shown on men, CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund nominees Gypsy Sport and Baja East focusing on clothing for the post-gender world), has this trend influenced your personal style and/or this collection?

I’ve always been inspired by menswear and I have always looked at what’s going on in the men’s fashion for my inspiration. I’ve always been inspired by the functionality of menswear. Mixing menswear with very feminine items is a little bit my signature, it has been for a long time actually!

Garance Doré and VinceTurtlenecks are everywhere this season (hooray for warmth and style!), and your Vince collection features a particularly fetching, softly color-blocked version. What’s your go-to tip for styling a turtleneck in a decidedly unfussy way?

I like to wear it over a pair of skinny jeans (for proportions) and with a long shirt underneath – I love layering and it makes the whole look more interesting!

In your book, you talk about being called to a creative career from an early age. You’ve found massive success through your illustration and photography—how would you compare the design process of this collaboration to your usual creative process?

It’s pretty similar! You try things and see what works. Some really don’t work, some do. Let it rest for a minute and give it a second look…And repeat the process until you’re happy with the result.

Who or what currently inspires you?

Traveling and finding interesting new ways to live, which Internet has made possible. And the clothes that go with that!

What is your go-to color palette for fall/winter?

My color palette doesn’t really evolve, it’s based on white and neutrals. Today, I’m wearing all white. Then I can add a stripe or a print, but that’s pretty rare! And I love camel. :)

The holidays are coming up, and with that comes a very busy schedule filled with meetings, parties and family gatherings. What is your favorite holiday season look?

Well, I’m crazy about coats, I’m always on the lookout for the next one. I love the season because it’s cold enough to wear a coat, but not too much that you have to be bundled up in a parka. So, a great coat, a great sweater, and sneakers to walk around and find presents for my family.

Three Questions for Ottavio Missoni

©Photo: Cinzia Camela.

When it comes to powerful brand statements and instantly recognizable looks, Missoni is on top of the game. Those iconic patterns, the bold colors, the knits—the family!

©Photo: Cinzia Camela.

Ottavio Missoni was born into it—in the town of Gallarate almost exactly 31 years ago (he just had a birthday on November 10). But of course, he earned those stripes and zigzags, too; at 23 he began an immersive journey into the world of textiles, knitting, fabrics and production, and from there: the whole world. Or, more specifically the United States. No one knows his family’s business in America better than he does. He understands what women from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. are looking for, and he knows what makes them feel their most beautiful—which is why we had him curate a special selection of silhouettes from the resort collection.

And while we had the chance, we got him to tell us a little more about his life and work.

The Thread: We’ve been lucky enough to have you in our stores often; for example in Bellevue, Washington store, at our Minneapolis location (where you met with some lucky aspiring young designers and even invited them to your September 27 runway show in Milan), and recently you met with fans in Palo Alto. What do you love about traveling to Nordstrom stores?

Missoni: Having direct contact with customers is what I love best as it represents our heritage: the DNA of the family that has been part of our history for over 60 years. Our customers’ needs vary depending on where they’re from: East Coast, West Coast, north and south—what they purchase is often different. It’s useful to get direct feedback from consumers so that in the next collections we can come out with a product that the customer wants to wear.

What are your favorite pieces from the  buy? What do you see as the classic must-have look for this particular season?

The brushstrokes mini-dress is not only one of my favorite pieces, but is also unquestionably one of the must-haves for next spring.

Missoni ZZ

Here in the States we’re getting ready for the Thanksgiving holiday; what are you looking forward to this winter, and do you have any great resort plans on the horizon?

I’ll be in New York starting November 29 for the sales campaign of the Resort collection for 2016. We can‘t wait to present it! It’s a powerful and iconic collection that really reflects us. After that I’ll be in Miami for Art Basel. Every year I do my best to participate, as I’m very passionate about the relationship between art and fashion.

For Christmas I’m planning a ten-day trip, probably to South Africa, to get away from the work routine and start the new year fresh and ready for the F/W 2016 fashion show.
