Guest Editor: SJP Collection Street Style

Achieving great style comes from knowing who you are and celebrating it! For the fourth installment of Sarah Jessica Parker’s guest editor series, the designer pays tribute to six women who represent SJP Collection street style. From Morocco to New York City to Los Angeles, watch the creative vision of Sarah Jessica and partner George Malkemus come to life in true fashionable form.

sarah-jessica-parker-guest-editor-nordstrom-blog-4th-article-sjp-collection-street-style It’s enormously flattering and very fulfilling for those of us who work on the SJP Collection to see the shoes out in the world, having adventures across the globe and doing what they’re supposed to do for women.

I love imagining all that grosgrain traveling around—crossing city streets, strolling through parks and universities, sitting in meetings, driving cars, dropping off kids and meeting friends for lunch. And now to see the shoes actually having these experiences is amazing.

The women who submitted their street-style photographs really have their own elegance. They’re all special and very individual. I especially love the different shapes and sizes and ethnic backgrounds. It makes a nice visual montage of beauty.

Hello, Spring: Princess May Jubilo is an NYC-based blogger and shoe enthusiast. Clearly ready for spring, she gives her ‘Etta’ Pumps in Pink Mauve a twirl in Bryant Park.

This picture is fantastically exuberant. The way the skirt flies just captures your attention. It’s like an editorial campaign. Princess clearly has fun with shoes. She has a passion for dressing, and this photograph really tells that story. The Etta just looks gorgeous on.

Jet-Set Elegance: Estefanía is the Madrid-based shoe-obsessed blogger of C2T, who brought her ‘Carrie’ Pumps to Morocco to celebrate her wedding anniversary at none other than the hotel that was featured in the movie Sex and the City 2.

First of all, Estefanía is a very modern woman and I like how specific and simple her choices are. They add up really well and reflect great confidence. Looking at this picture I also feel very sentimental, because I have many vivid memories of working at that very place and shooting scenes with women I really love.

Garden Party Perfect: A curator of cool, Eileen is a co-founder of Fleet Collection, a Los Angeles-based line of clothing and handmade jewelry. The style-savvy designer maintains her ladylike ease donning the ‘Ina’ Pump in Green.

Eileen is so beautiful. I want to put on a pair of Inas just because her entire outfit is delightful. Every color choice is awesome, including the braided belt. I like the fact that she noticed the colors in the background and knew that navy would look great against all those greens. And that skirt, that print, that plaid—it’s amazing! None of it matches perfectly, which I love and respect so much. She doesn’t have rules. It’s an absolutely ravishing image.

9-to-5 Chic: Markessa, from Houston, Texas, shares that she recently went on a job interview wearing her ‘Carrie’ T-Strap Pumps in Black to make a classic and refined style statement. And guess what? She got the job—congrats!

What I adore about this picture is the sense of joy that resonates from Markessa. She exudes a sort of Southern charm. The fact that she boldly ties the bow on her dress instead of making a knot, for instance, tells me that she’s not trying to be anybody but herself. She brought more femininity to the dress by doing that as well, and it highlights the delicate details of her Carries.

City Sleek: Estephanie, a student at Florida International University, likes to rock her ‘Wallace’ Sandal in Metallic Purple around the Wynwood Arts District in Miami.

You really get the impression that Estephanie bought these shoes because she knew she would wear them often and feel confident. Here’s a woman who knows what she likes to wear and how she wants to feel. It’s great to see her in flats because she still looks really feminine. She’s got a beautiful figure. And the metallic purple is the color I would have picked for her, for sure.

Daytime Darling: Christina, the blogger behind Cardigan, walks the streets of Morristown, New Jersey, with uncomplicated sophistication in her ‘Bobbie’ Sandal, demonstrating why a bold pop of mint color is so much fun!

Christina is obviously someone who knows she can wear an open-toe shoe. It’s so flattering on her. I appreciate that she chose a mint hue, which some might reserve for special occasions, and treated it like it’s an everyday color for her. She didn’t worry, “Do the blues match? Is the mint too bold?” She has a kind of casualness that I find very fetching. She looks quite lovely!

Until next time,

UGG-Australia-Style-Haven-Indio-California-2014 Hello from Indio! It’s been a wild week of musical mayhem and poolside parties down in the Coachella Valley. Between previewing the latest collection of UGG Australia, the putting green, the nail art station, the snow cone machine and the ping-pong table, there were a million things to do!

Listen Up! Summer Festival Picks

You guys, festival season is HERE. Whether you’re planning on hitting up the Southern California desert, the bucolic Tennessee countryside, a major city like Chicago or New York or taking in crazy, awe-inspiring views in Eastern Washington, there’s TONS of music to check out and much fun to be had. But before you grab your sunscreen and sandals, check out this itty-bitty sampling of the bands we’d be super-stoked to see this summer.

It’s crazy to consider, but this song, off The Strokes’ debut album Is This It, is thirteen years old. What’s crazier is that it still holds up quite nicely. Keep your eyes peeled for a cameo from Slash and, more obviously, Bob Pollard and the rest of G.B.V.

We’re not sure what Wild Beasts are doing in this video for the super-smooth electro-jam “A Simple Beautiful Truth,” but we like it—all of it. Maybe synchronized hiking/dancing is the new it-Brit thing?

We can imagine listening to dulcet-throated Sharon Van Etten crooning this gorgeous tune while we kick back on a blanket (or maybe a portable hammock?!) in the Oregon summer sun.

Another MUCH-welcomed blast from the past. We would die to be able to shake it like a Polaroid picture at an Outkast show—luckily, these guys are playing just about every major festival this summer. ;)

From sweet dance moves to disco-y grooves to strong eyebrow game—the Haim sisters can do no wrong. Also: That. Silver. Leather. Jacket.

Yup, for really reals. ELTON JOHN is playing this summer. Can you even imagine? His whole set is going to be like one massive karaoke lounge. Amazing.

Listen Up! Nordstrom Honors Sub Pop Records

It started as a scrappy local label known for breaking some of the biggest names in grunge (Nirvana, anyone?), but in the last couple of decades, Seattle-based Sub Pop Records has grown into a mega-force in the music industry, known across the planet for releasing killer music that spans a variety of genres. For example, current releases include the layered harmonies of The Head and the Heart, the experimental noise punk of No Age, Lyla Foy’s delicate dreamy pop and the recent (awesome) album from German electro-popsters The Notwist, whom you might recall from their super-popular release Neon Golden way back in 2002.

To celebrate Sub Pop’s continued world domination, Nordstrom is honoring its two founders, Jonathan Poneman and Bruce Pavitt, with bronze footprints in front of our Downtown Seattle store and a live performance from Sub Pop’s own Helio Sequence. If you’re in Seattle and want to check it out, the event takes place Wednesday, April 9, at 3pm. Until then, play around with our Sub Pop window (also at the Downtown Seattle store): an interactive touch-screen experience that allows the user to choose and watch videos from various Sub Pop bands over the years.

Wrapped Up in DVF: Celebrating 40 Years of an Iconic Dress

If it could be said that there was a dress that started it all, Diane von Furstenberg‘s legendary wrap dress would hold that title. With its creation in 1974 and her words “Feel like a woman, wear a dress!” the Belgian-born designer ushered in a new era of sexy, easygoing comfort and confidence in women’s fashion.

Diane-von-Furstenberg-Wrap-Dress-and-Accessories-at-Nordstrom Diane von Furstenberg Wrap Dress & Accessories

Despite its celebrated status, the figure-flattering style known for hugging a woman’s body in all the right places (and none of the wrong ones) started from humble beginnings.

“First, I designed a wrap top, which was inspired by the little sweaters that ballerinas wore, and a matching skirt, and then I thought, Why not turn it into a dress?” explains the designer. “I wanted to create a simple little dress that I could wear anywhere.”

It quickly became a part of the fashion lexicon.

“It turned out to be revolutionary, because back then everyone was doing couture, which was beautiful, but it was all so complicated—no one was doing anything simple like the wrap dress, so it turned out to be exactly what women wanted.”

At a time when women’s fashion was becoming more liberated, the sexy, unstructured style that molds to the body and celebrates a woman’s natural shape struck a chord. By 1976, she’d sold more than a million.

Diane-von-Furstenberg-interview-on-Wrap-Dress-at-Nordstrom- Diane von Furstenberg ‘New Julian 2′ Silk Wrap Dress

“I had no idea it would become a phenomenon…it was just a simple little dress that looked like nothing on the rack. But when you put it on a woman, something amazing happened!”

This has been a milestone year for von Furstenberg with the 40th anniversary; an international exhibition honoring the dress in Moscow, São Paulo, Beijing and Los Angeles; and the wrap being featured in Oscar-nominated American Hustle.

“It was such a wonderful surprise that happened right in time for the anniversary. David O. Russell had the wrap dress in mind for Amy Adams’s character because it was the moment she was coming into her own and really becoming a woman,” she says. “So I was so excited he chose the wrap dress for that and that the costume designer, Michael Wilkinson, found one in an old vintage shop. The best things are like that—you don’t plan. They just happen.”

Adams wears three of the dresses in the film, celebrating her character’s newfound sophistication and sultry confidence. The first one is the green and white dress that von Furstenberg wore on the cover of Newsweek in 1976, which the film purchased from a vintage dealer; the second one features a brown and white feather design and was found in a costume-rental house in Los Angeles; and the third is a contemporary black and red leopard print DVF dress.

Due to its influence on women’s fashion, the dress was included as part of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1997, and has recently been showcased in a site-specific exhibition that traveled to three countries and is currently at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

“I knew that I wanted to do something here for the anniversary, but when I found the May Company Building, which is a former department store on the LACMA campus and the future home of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, I knew that it was the perfect mix of retail, art and glamour.”

The 9,000-square-foot retrospective features a variety of wrap dresses designed over the last 40 years, including anniversary dresses created exclusively for the exhibition, and a glass collage that incorporates portraits and prints to create a floating dress.

Despite its elegant nature and storied history, the dress doesn’t have to be reserved for special occasions, von Furstenberg says.

“You can wear it with combat boots or even Converse. You can roll up the sleeves, or wear it with a jean jacket. Or, of course, it can also be very elegant if you pair it with heels and a sleek bag.”

The dresses in her spring 2014 ‘Oasis’ collection feature striking nature and animal prints, infused with dazzling colors and inspired by her travels.

“It’s all about an unexpected source of beauty and being your own oasis,” she explains. “The palette is grounded in black and white with pops of vibrant color. The prints are desert inspired, from sweeping landscapes to graphic jungle diamond…the prints and silhouettes are so DVF!”

Diane-von-Furstenberg-spring-2014-runway-show-Naomi-Campbell Adding to the glamour of von Furstenberg’s spring 2014 runway show at New York Fashion Week was the inclusion of supermodel Naomi Campbell.

“I heard that she was going to be in town and she said that she would walk, so we were very excited!”

Not a bad way to wrap up 40 years of history and fashion.

The Journey of a Dress exhibition runs through May 1.
