Welcome to Fashion Bytes, a cheat sheet for your favorite runway designers. From style inspirations to behind-the-scenes scoops, here’s everything worth knowing at New York Fashion Week Spring 2018.
The brand: COACH
The history: When Coach began in 1941, it employed six skilled artisans to make wallets and luggage by hand from fine leather. The products were a modest success, but the brand really took off in the 1950s, when founder Miles Cahn realized the soft, strong, dark leather used for baseball gloves was ideal for making accessories. His wife Lillian suggested they try women’s handbags, and boom! An empire of classic American style was born.
The designer: Stuart Vevers is a London native who worked at Louis Vuitton and Givenchy before creating Mulberry‘s ultra-cool aura with muses like Alexa Chung and Lana Del Rey. He joined Coach in 2014, and swiftly snagged Selena Gomez as his newest collaborator.
The show: If the set of West Side Story got glitter-bombed, it would look like the Coach runway, with silver sparkles coating everything from a vintage Camaro to a fire escape, a front stoop, and even a mailbox and a trash can. Models like Adwoa Aboah, Winnie Harlow and Kaia Gerber wore quilt-patched silk camisoles, sequin slip dresses, and graphic bomber jackets embroidered with Keith Haring prints. There were matching taxi cabs waiting for VIPs outside.
The f-row: Gomez sat with her current BFF, the Weeknd, the photographer Petra Collins, plus actresses Emma Roberts, Kiersey Clemons, Sabrina Carpenter and the pop star Charlie XCX, who wore a demure floral tea dress and glitter sunglasses.
The verdict: Come for the black leather boots, stay for the innovative, artsy twist on a classic varsity sports jacket. We’ll also take the glitter platform heels ASAP please.
