Kate’s Take: New York Fashion Week Top Beauty Trends

From “Rock & Roll Spanish Women” and “Smoky Chelsea Girls,” to Utilitarian Punk” and “Twiggy’s Daughter” – these were just a few of the inspirations heard backstage as we endured the freezing temps in NYC for Fall 2015 Fashion Week. Equipped with weatherproof boots (thank you Aquatalia and Valentino !) and Mom’s super-warm, hand-knit legwarmers (thank you MOM!), we braved wind, snow and sauna-like backstage tents to see fall beauty in all its splendor.

The Eyes Have It

Fall has always been the season for the Smoky Eye. 2015 is no exception, but new, modern approaches make it exciting, sophisticated and definitely dramatic. Regardless of the techniques and colors used, we saw many cool variations including:

nyfw-aw15-backstage-beauty-n-miller Classic: From gorgeous grays and deep browns, to modern cinnamon and plum tones, smoky never looked so good (Christian Siriano, Alexander Wang, Derek Lam).

aw15-nyfw-beauty-trends-nicole-miller

Smoldering: Layering deep jewel tones like purple or metallic chocolate created amazing petrol-like lids with almost shimmering finishes (Nicole Miller, Altuzarra, Monique Lhuillier).

nyfw-aw15-backstage-beauty-b-mischka

Artistic & graphic: Cue the black eyeliner revolution to go beyond the traditional cat eye (Cushnie, Badgley Mischka, Yigal Azrouel).

Just for fun: Crystal and beaded accents will be perfect for a holiday party (Tadashi, Ohne Titel.)

Try it now:

Lancôme | M·A·C | Bobbi Brown | Laura Mercier

The Bold Lip

Red alert! The Fall lip is seriously making a statement and in a variety of deep tones. Whether matte, cream or glossy, lips were saturated and refined (translation: applied with purpose–well-defined but not always with actual liner). A few standouts included:

nyfw-aw15-backstage-beauty-phillip-lim

Oxblood, inspired by ’90s red leather Doc Martens boots, at 3.1 Phillip Lim.

nyfw-aw15-backstage-beauty-c-herrera

Ruby, for vampy elegance, at Carolina Herrera.

nyfw-aw15-backstage-beauty-m-lhuillier

Saturated crimson to offset “slept-in” eye makeup at Monique Lhuillier.

nyfw-aw15-backstage-beauty-m-lhuillier

Dark and sensual matte tones of burgundy and brick at Marchesa and Naeem Khan.

NARS ‘Annabella’ | M·A·C ‘Diva’ | stila ‘Acai Crush’ | Charlotte Tilbury ‘So Marilyn’

Ones To Watch:

Layered nail polish: We LOVE this one because anyone can do it, and it literally doubles your polish wardrobe! Our favorites were nude over white, and red over black (aka “Red Velvet Cupcake” at Kate Spade by Deborah Lippmann). Think of it as bespoke nail art! Shop: nail polish

nyfw-aw15-backstage-beauty-c-m-valvo-lashes-1

“Kewpie doll” lashes – spiky and clumpy, yet still somehow wearable, as seen at Nanette Lepore and literally painted on at Carmen Marc Valvo. Consider it the modernized Twiggy effect. Shop: mascara

nyfw-beauty-trends-aw15-kates-take-Brows

Bringing out the Brows – natural brows are definitely IN, as we saw at ICB, Alexander Wang, and Christian Siriano. With so many great brow products available, there’s no need to over-groom or over-think these face framers. Shop: brow products

nyfw-beauty-trends-aw15-kates-take-Undone-hair

“Undone hair” – think ropey, slept-in and intentionally imperfect. It’s all about a raw texture (sleep in braids for the perfect next-day waviness seen at Novis and Altuzarra). But as one stylist reminded us, “keep it clean…not dirty or grungy.” Shop: hair care

Trend Recap: Retro Futurism

milan-fashion-week-aw15-trend-recap-retro-futurism

‘Retro Futurism’ is an exciting concept developing in Milan. Design houses have years of archives to reference for inspiration, and what we find interesting is how the past—specifically the ’60s and ’70s—is being reinvented with a futuristic approach. With a play on proportion, quirky color mixes and geometric patterns, the past has never looked so good!

Milan Fashion Week: February 27

Highlights and commentary from yesterday’s Milan Fashion Week runway shows: Etro combines bourgeois formality with lavish, tapestry-inspired looks. The Italian fashion house known for its artistic textiles didn’t fail to deliver with geometric 70s prints in rich, earthy tones and sumptuous fabrications.

Fashion Office Bottom Line: “Etro’s heritage as a print house and their signature luxe take on boho style are perfectly in sync with the prevailing ’70s mood of the season with gorgeously layered paisley prints spliced with Deco geometrics in shades of caramel, gold and burnt orange. Long and layered silhouettes speak to the idea of retro chic, but still look perfectly modern.”—Red Godfrey, VP Fashion Office

Street Style: Patricia at Just Cavalli

Patricia looks flat out amazing in these slim denim overalls. She’s got a bit of a retro seventies vibe going, but feels absolutely modern too. The white turtleneck is a super popular piece this season and it pairs so well with denim. The striped, cropped fur coat adds some luxe texture to her look.

Street Style: Linda at Just Cavalli

Another show, another great outfit from Linda Tol ! Overalls and jumpsuits continue to be a hot item this season, especially flared-leg styles. This silky patterned pair is so Linda; unique and edgy. A simple turtleneck is the perfect pairing with this statement one-piece. A bold lip and structured box clutch add even more cool sophistication to the look.

Street Style: Anjelica at Just Cavalli

Anjelica looks like she just walked off a 1970s rock n’ roll tour bus. I am so pleased with the whole ’70s revival trend, especially this Penny Lane-inspired style. Tall boots, a big hat, and a shearling-lined coat make for a statement seventies look. A flowing midi dress keeps things light and feminine.

Street Style: Tina at Fendi

Tina Leung is one of those lucky ladies who looks good in everything. She has amazing taste and a modern, cutting-edge sensibility. When Tina walks down the street, you’re compelled to capture the moment. Today’s look is true Tina: fierce, edgy and sleek. This striped moto jacket is a thing of beauty, and I need it in my closet ASAP!

Street Style: Nausheen at Fendi

We all know and love Nausheen Shah here on The Thread. She’s such a delight, both as a person and a fashion maven. This monochromatic look is undeniably chic and Milanese. I love the grommet details on Nausheen’s trench, which add a little flair to a classic piece. A vibrant clutch injects some color.

Street Style: Elizabeth at Fendi

Fur was everywhere at Fendi! Elizabeth’s fur topper is totally intriguing. It’s got a unique cut and amazing texture. A sleek leather mini pairs well with the statement fur. Those Fendi boots are one of my favorites of the year, especially in mod white. Mirrored sunnies (the It glasses of the season, btw!) and a chic white bag complete the look.
