Welcome to Fashion Bytes, a cheat sheet for your favorite runway designers. From style inspirations to behind-the-scenes scoops, here’s everything worth knowing at New York Fashion Week Spring 2018.
The brand: Alexander Wang
The history: After interning at Marc Jacobs and Teen Vogue, Alexander Wang launched his namesake line with three cashmere sweaters; by 2007, it became a full collection of super-skinny denim, oversize leather bombers, tuxedo-front mini-dresses and some of the best-selling handbags of the past decade.
The designer: The California native admits he loves three things: skincare, hip-hop dance parties and his dog, a mini pinscher named Uni. Accordingly, his fashion shows blast throwback rap jams and put young and impossibly dewy models on the runway. And though Uni hasn’t made his catwalk debut yet, plenty of other models—including Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and even Giselle—have done the honors.
The show: Dubbed “Wangfest” after the brand’s party-heavy events newsletter, this show happened three times: twice in Manhattan for any public viewers nearby, and once in Brooklyn for an industry crowd. That meant models like Bella Hadid and Candice Swanepoel were literally stopping traffic, and when Joan Smalls strutted in towering heels, she did it on New York’s notoriously bumpy pavement—a very tough feat, especially with flashbulbs in your eyes.
The f-row: There were no seats at this show, so even Kim Kardashian stood on the sidewalk against the cordon and waited for the show to start. Nicola Peltz, Sophia Richie and Natasha Poly joined her.
The verdict: A thrilling fashion experience we’ll never forget… no matter how much vodka we drink with the Wang Gang after the catwalk ends.
