Y-3’s Noci Sneaker: Fresh Off the Runway, Explained by Senior Design Director Lawrence Midwood

nocithumb

noci

After its debut last week at Paris Fashion Week, the Y-3 Noci sneaker is now available at Nordstrom. Usually, you can’t buy products fresh off the runway from Fashion Week. But sometimes you can, and now is one of those times.

Y-3, of course, is the partnership between legendary designer Yohji Yamamoto (hence the Y) and adidas (hence the 3, for three stripes). The brand has been envisioning the future of sports fashion for 13 years now.

We spoke with Y-3 senior design director Lawrence Midwood about sci-fi aesthetics, what it’s like working with Yamamoto, and the inspiration behind the Noci–a bruiser of a sneaker.

Did a team of people work on this shoe, or a few key individuals? How was this project different from what you normally do?

Every shoe we release relies on teams of people both here at adidas in Germany, and also with Yohji and his team in Japan. This release was different because we decided to supply the shoe on its launch day during Paris Fashion Week: 3,000 pairs across the world to over 100 retailers, six months quicker than our normal timelines. It was quite a challenge. Designing, developing, prototype testing and then manufacturing a shoe in those numbers, in such a short window, didn’t result in less people working on the project, however. It resulted in everyone looking at their part of the process and reducing their normal lead time in half. That’s a challenge and requires great teamwork and focus.

What was the design inspiration for this shoe? Was it based on other footwear? An animal? A building?

From the beginning, we wanted to bring a new aesthetic to this shoe. We felt it was time for something different with a bold and perhaps polarizing visual identity. This season we were inspired by science fiction for the main Y-3 line. The shoe itself was based on a fictional need for a space-trekking boot. Something that could deal with any terrain, terrestrial or not, and also offer long periods of comfort and stability. That inspired the look and build of the shoe. We liked the notion that the shoe was built and modified over time rather than designed. We wanted the feeling that different elements from different products and functions were used to assemble the shoe.

What’s exciting about men’s footwear in general in 2016?

The sneaker as a fashionable expression of individuality and style has never been more prominent. So it’s a great time to be pushing the boundaries. At Y-3 we are very fortunate to have that remit from adidas as a brand but also to have Yohji’s vision and renegade approach. He pushes us constantly as a team to push forward, to surprise people and continue to rebel against the norm.

What is Yohji Yamamoto’s involvement in Y-3 today? Does he approve everything?

Yohji is Y-3. From beginning to end, from initial ideas down to the details, and of course our fashion show in Paris. He is instrumental in everything we create as a team. In fact, usually he is the one pushing us the hardest to not stand still. Very often he is the most vocal person in the label about challenging our established way or thought processes. He has been creating the future for decades–but please don’t think that means that he is slowing down. At least he doesn’t let us relax for a minute.

DESSERTS

Lemon Ricotta Cookies: Closer in texture and tenderness to a cake than a cookie, these moist and almost cheesecake-y lemon ricotta cookies are perfect little winners. Best of all, these cookies require freezing, so they’re ready whenever you are for a ridiculously good treat.

Dark Cherry Crisp: We’re deep into cherry season, and this easy dessert is perfect to make ahead for a crowd, either warm out of the oven or at room temperature. Our recipe does a great job of retaining those sweet cherries’ plump texture.

Red Velvet Cupcakes: Moist, fluffy and a deep cherry red, these little guys get topped with our lemony cream cheese frosting. All you need are some blue and red sprinkles to take these into festive territory for the Fourth.

Summer Berry Shortcakes: Our alternative to a classic. These tender, homemade shortcakes provide a delicious shelter for pillowy whipped cream, a mound of whatever berries look irresistible, tangy lemon curd and a blackberry sauce for good measure.

DRINKS

Sparkling Lemonades: Whether you opt for our hibiscus or pomegranate version, neither will disappoint. Our recipes make two gallons—enough to make any crowd happy. They’re also kid-friendly, though you could always tip in a little good-quality vodka or prosecco.

Rent Check Cocktail: The combination of watermelon and jalapeño is as unexpected as it is refreshing. Tequila and St.-Germain come together with muddled watermelon and jalapeño simple syrup to create a delicious cocktail with a kick.

Basil Cucumber Cooler: Talk about refreshing. Basil and cucumber get muddled with lime juice, a glug of gin and a top-up of club soda. It’s like a day at the spa, if the spa put gin in their fancy water.

Everybody (No Hyperbole) Was Wearing Hunter Boots at Glastonbury 2016

It’s almost tradition now—ever since Kate Moss was the first to be smart enough to slip on a pair of the rain boots with her teeny cutoffs in the ’90s, Hunter boots are the official footwear of Glastonbury. After all, the storied music festival gets muddy—and this year was thought by many to be the muckiest. But braving the elements is part of the fun, right?

In 2016, Moss’s kid sister, Lottie, was among the throngs of festivalgoers—along with Pixie Geldof, Alexa Chung, the Delevingne sisters—who did likewise. See our slideshow after the jump to watch how the style set handles puddles while the music plays on.

Caring for Leather Bags with the Globetrotting Duo Behind Troubadour

troubadour_feature_201606

Elegant and practical, road-ready but refined, Troubadour bags are the perfect travel companions for daily excursions or epic adventures. Samuel Bail and Abel Samet’s line of leather goods is a passion project that sprung from a noticeable gap in the luggage market for overnight bags suitable for a weekend with friends or a business trip. Their sleek styles bridge destinations and occupations. World-class artisans help the founders create the enduring designs in their collection. And every aspect of a Troubadour bag is carefully considered, from the zippers and buckles to the vegetable-tanned leathers crafted in Tuscany.

Troubadour leather and rubber backpack

We spoke with the two jet setters, who were at the Pitti Uomo trade show at the time, about how to select and care for leather, and about the material’s enduring appeal. Read on to the end to learn how you should be caring for your leather goods at every stage in its life cycle.

Troubadour founders Abel Samet and Samuel Bail

What is your favorite thing about leather?

Samuel Bail: We love the way leather wears–its character, patina, uniqueness and ability to age beautifully.

Do you have a memory of discovering how smitten you were by quality leather products?

Abel Samet: An old leather wallet my grandfather always had on him. It literally looked like it had been to hell and back, which is absolutely what made it so cool to me as a little kid.

Troubadour Samuel Bail and Abel Samet

Where are the best leathers in the world from, in your opinion? And what makes them so special?

SB: There are many people and places in the world creating wonderful leather. That said, we have a definite affinity for leather made in the Santa Croce di Magliano region of Italy. It is the birthplace of natural-vegetable tanning, and the village of Santa Croce di Magliano has served as a leather-making hub since the Middle Ages.

Should you check a leather bag on a flight? How can you be sure it won’t get damaged?

AS: Exceptional leather will last decades and can sustain many different usage scenarios. If it’s a quality leather bag, you should feel comfortable checking it in your travels. That said, every Troubadour piece is designed with function in mind—and carry-on sizing means our products fit snugly inside an airplane’s overhead compartment.

You say that vegetable-tanned leather will “sing” when you rub it. What do you mean by leather “singing”?

SB: Great leather appeals to the senses, including sound. Next time you have the chance to run your hands over a wonderful leather piece, notice the look, smell and—crazy as it seems—the sound. The surface characteristics of vegetable-tanned leather create a definite sound when rubbed.

How should you use leather cream?

AS: It depends on the type of leather. Vegetable-tanned leather, which we feature exclusively in all Troubadour pieces, allows for the natural oils in the hide to remain, and therefore very little care is needed. As the leather ages, these oils rise to the surface, and it requires minimal maintenance. We suggest applying a light moisturizing cream every six months for best care.

A few simple steps to keep in mind:

  1. A clean surface is ideal; brush off any dust or dirt from the leather.
  2. Using a clean cloth, dab material into the cream to score a small, coin-sized dollop.
  3. Gently rub the cream all over the leather in a circular motion.
  4. Only a small amount of cream is needed to achieve desired effect.

You’re welcome to view our leather care guide on the Troubadour blog.

Which Troubadour bag do you carry regularly?

SB: Honestly, it depends on where we’re going. Though the Rucksack, Day Bag and Briefcase are regularly in our rotation.

Tell us about some of the finishes on your bags?

AS: The single most important thing to know about finishes on a Troubadour bag is that there are none! We choose to present the leather as it is, allowing the natural oils in the vegetable-tanned leather to rise to the surface, helping scratches disappear. We select the most perfect, naturally unblemished hides available, and these wear beautifully over time, thanks to the hard work of our incredible leather craftsmen.

What’s your best argument for carrying a briefcase? Seems like they’ve fallen out of fashion.

SB: When all is said and done, briefcases are functional, and function never goes out of style. What we’ve done is evolve the traditional design—large, hard, boxy—into something better suited to today’s lifestyle. Softer, more subtle, taking into account the needs of modern technology.

Troubadour bags

Is there something you can do to treat natural leather so that the dye won’t rub off on light-colored clothes?

AS: Troubadour leather is barrel dyed, which means the dye permeates the entire hide as opposed to just spraying the dye on the top, as is the case with synthetic finishes. While it is possible that color may transfer from the leather to a light piece of apparel on a humid day, the mark should always come out in the wash. As with anything handcrafted, it’s worth just being mildly conscious of that in your first few months or so of wear.

What’s the secret behind the quality of natural, vegetable-tanned leather?

SB: Troubadour vegetable-tanned hides are immersed in a blend of ingredients, including natural oils, water, bark powders–such as quebracho from Argentina, mimosa from Australia and Brazil, and chestnut powder from southern Europe.

AS: The small, family-run tanneries we work with create their own unique tanning recipes, which are jealously guarded secrets! We’re delighted that the result is soft, smooth, durable leather that looks and feels better with age.

The care life cycle of leather, courtesy of the Troubadour team:

Let it wear with you. As your items travel with you, the leather will assume a warmer, softer look and feel. Over time the bags take on beautifully different characteristics, which is perhaps our favorite thing about vegetable-tanned leather. Good leather does not need to be obsessed over—the aging properties of vegetable-tanned leather make it so special and produce a bag that will never be repeated.

Natural dyes permeate the leather consistently while ensuring it remains supple. The color will not scratch off. This makes caring for the leather easier and allows you to live with a bag.

A little care and attention every now and then will go a long way.

Ongoing care

Strong sunlight will dry leather more quickly and fade the color. We recommend protecting leather from prolonged exposure to strong sunlight.

Vegetable-tanned leather should not get wet. Avoid contact with water, oil and grease—this will cause wrinkling and discoloration. If it should get wet, gently dab with a soft neutral cloth to absorb the moisture.

To clean your product, wipe it using a clean, soft cloth.

Every 6 to 12 months, depending on usage, the leather can be treated with a neutral, natural leather-care product using a soft cloth. This adds moisture to the leather, keeping it supple and preventing cracking. A couple times a year is enough—too much oil can damage the fibers of the leather.

Repair any damage as it happens. Each product embarks on a unique journey specific to your travels. As with anything in life, it’s important to catch any issues early so you can treat it before it becomes a larger issue. It’s important to find a skilled individual you trust to handle any repairs and mending needs.

Troubadour has created Troubadour Cares to help customers with their Troubadour products in any way we can, be it repairs, reconditioning or anything else. We follow up 12 months after each purchase to check if we can be helpful. If repairs are required, a postage-paid box is sent to the customer to ship the product to Troubadour.

Troubadour portfolio case

SHOP: Troubadour leather portfolio case

In case of disaster

Water damage: If leather gets wet, take a soft cloth and pat dry. If the bag gets soaked, first allow the leather to dry naturally in airy surroundings. DO NOT use artificial heat to speed up the process; that can end up drying out the leather too much. Fret not: a little water will not ruin your bag; it will just change its appearance. Use oil only if the leather starts to dry or stiffen.

Rips and tears: Quality, dense leather should be strong and not rip. When leather rips, unlike fabric, it actually rips. This would mean either the item is at the end of a very long road, or it was not good quality leather to begin with. Mending will be at the discretion of the repair shop.

How to store leather

Simple: store the product in its protective bag in a cool, dry place. However, be sure to take it out of the cool, dry place and have it by your side when you embark on an adventure!

A Guide to Made-to-Measure Shirts: Five Steps to Perfection

FIT

madetomeasure

There’s nothing like a made-to-measure shirt. There just isn’t. You look good, you feel good, you don’t futz with your collar or pull on the fabric when you check yourself out in the mirror. The shirt does not require extra finessing. It’s almost like it was…specifically fitted to your frame? Exactly.

Some trepidation about buying such a specialty item over the Internet is normal. But do not fear. The process is simple: two measurements you can take at home (neck and sleeve, detailed here) and five easy decisions to make. Then you’re done.

Alternatively, come see us in person. We’ll take care of you.

SHOP: made-to-measure shirts

RELATED: tailored suits & alterations

FABRIC

Start by choosing a fabric: fine white twill, blue twill, blue check, blue micro texture, blue mini gingham, blue brown micro check, blue micro basket weave, blue herringbone twill, Swiss blue twill (higher thread count), Swiss white twill. Basically you want color, texture, neither or both. Your call. Each one of these fabrics goes with everything.

FITClassic, regular, trim, extra-trim: we hold the definitions of these fit types to be self-evident.

COLLAR

Your collar choices are straight, spread, short spread, cutaway or button-down. A general guideline: don’t wear a button-down collar with a suit. Sorry, but it looks dorky. Wear your button-down collar with a casual jacket like a blazer or with no jacket. All other collar styles are fine for suiting up, with the main decision-making criteria being how much of your tie you want to show.

POCKET

Pockets: very cool, but not everyone needs one. You know who you are. And you know who you aren’t.

CUFF

Choosing a cuff is, in a way, a choice about jewelry. That’s because if you choose a French cuff, which rolls over itself, sticks out of your jacket sleeve and is fastened with a cuff link, the links are a pretty major decision. They’re on display. You probably already know how you feel about jewelry, but if you’ve never worn French cuffs and links, give it a try in one of our stores just to see. You may think it’s not for you and then surprise yourself. The decision between a barrel or mitered cuff, however (rounded corner or cut-off corner), comes down to formality. The mitered cuff is dressier.

Loewe’s New It Bag Is All About Your Favorite Four-Legged Friend—and Old-World Craft

bag3

The word of the day, thanks to Loewe, is marquetry: “decorative work in which elaborate patterns are formed by the insertion of pieces of material (as wood, shell or ivory) into a wood veneer that is then applied to a surface (as of a piece of furniture).”

That’s the official Merriam-Webster rundown. And here’s what happens when the ancient technique is redefined by the brand’s creative director, Jonathan Anderson.

bag3

In conjunction with the recent Salone del Mobile furniture fair in Milan, a new mini collection of crossbody bags that includes the vibrant four-legged friend style shown here borrows the craft’s basic tenets, using leather inlays to adapt patterns taken from archival silk prints and centuries-old Japanese wooden screens.

The team at Loewe tells us that “every source motif has been reworked, either magnified or abstracted, for a contemporary appearance, and different types of leather were used to produce a painterly effect, with varying textures and contrasting sections.”
loewe

Using marquetry this way isn’t new for the Spanish-heritage brand; they have a serious history with the mosaic-like process, but Salone del Mobile provided the team’s artisans with the opportunity to flex it in a fresh way. The technique, as applied to floor lamps, chairs, drawers and more, is ultra-inspiring—a true homage not just to the highly skilled craft but to the aesthetic of the Bloomsbury Group of early 20th-century London.

And don’t worry: even if you had been there, you wouldn’t have been able to purchase the leather-covered oak pieces because they were for exhibition only. Which makes the bags that much more desirable. They’re not just of-the-moment fashion accessories, they’re souvenirs from an exploration that was right in line with Loewe’s mission: “To push the expressive and technical capabilities of leather and transfer the knowledge of the house to new fields and uncharted frontiers.”
