Get the HUM Glow with This One Vitamin and Some Yummy Recipes post image

Aging, stress, environmental pollutants and a poor diet all have negative impacts on the skin, causing it to lose moisture, luminosity and elasticity over time. A dire prognosis, since we can’t stop the clock. Luckily, the beauty experts at Hum Nutrition have a highly effective solution, proven to help you regain your glow from the inside-out, without messing with the laws of nature.

Glow Sweet Glow is a vegan gummy vitamin that helps the skin retain moisture thanks to low-molecular, easy-to-absorb hyaluronic acid. That, plus a combination of vitamins C and E, gives the skin a protective barrier. Best yet, the gummy tastes like an orange creamsicle.

We chatted with registered dietitian Sarah Greenfield about the radiant effects of hyaluronic acid and vitamins C and E contained in Glow Sweet Glow, Hum’s newest daily vitamin for optimal skin health. As a bonus, Sarah shares her favorite delicious recipes for clear, hydrated skin.

How does Glow Sweet Glow stimulate collagen production?

Glow Sweet Glow (GSG) contains vitamin C, which is a precursor to collagen production, meaning the body needs vitamin C in order to make collagen. GSG gives the body the nutrients it needs to enhance collagen production.

What is Amla fruit doing for my skin?

Amla fruit is also known as Indian Gooseberry—it looks like green grapes. Amla is loaded with vitamin C, which not only supports collagen production, it’s also a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the skin from damage. We are constantly exposed to things in the environment that create free radicals in our bodies, which can damage our skin. Vitamin C from the Amla fruit helps to clear out some of these damaging free radicals.

Tell me about hyaluronic acid. Why is it good for the skin?

Our bodies naturally make hyaluronic acid and 50 percent of the hyaluronic acid in our bodies is found in the skin. This is important for the hydration status of our skin. Hyaluronic acid also helps lock collagen into the skin, which helps decrease fine lines and wrinkles.

What else can I incorporate into my skin care or wellness routine that will further the effects of GSG?

Taking Collagen Love is a great add-on as it provides additional collagen to the body. I would also suggest taking Red Carpet as it provides the body with additional vitamin E and anti-inflammatory fats. Together you have the perfect skin care supplement routine.

Beauty begins from within. Boost the effects of Glow Sweet Glow with these skin supporting recipes from Sarah Greenfield:

SKIN-HYDRATING COCONUT CRUSH SMOOTHIE

Ingredients:

1/2 banana
2 tbsp. chia seeds
1 tbsp. cacao nibs
1 scoop Raw Beauty Green Superfood Powder in Chocolate Mint
1 cup coconut yogurt
1 cup pure coconut water
1 cup ice
dash of vanilla extract

Combine ingredients in the blender, mix and enjoy!

How will this smoothie help my skin?

Pure coconut water is loaded with antioxidants, amino acids, enzymes, B-complex vitamins, vitamin C and minerals like iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium and zinc. Coconut yogurt combines these micronutrients with probiotic power, which soothes the inflammation in the gut that can lead to acne and other skin problems. Probiotics ensure that good bacteria regulate our digestive health for overall well-being.

Chia seeds can absorb 10x their weight in water, therefore prolonging hydration in the body and preventing premature skin aging. Finally, Hum’s Raw Beauty superfood powder delivers a powerful blend of alkalizing greens, detoxifying herbs and beauty-boosting phytonutrients for your best skin.

DIY PUMPKIN SKIN MASK

Ingredients:

1 cup plain, pureed canned pumpkin
1 tbsp. unflavored plain yogurt
1/4 tsp. olive oil
2 tbsp. honey

Mix well and apply to clean, moist skin. Let sit for 10 minutes and then remove with a clean washcloth. Apply your favorite moisturizer afterwards.

How will this mask help my skin?

Pumpkins are great for radiant skin—they’re rich in vitamin A and enzymes that brighten your skin tone.

Asking for a Friend: How to Wear Prints & Patterns

Asking for a Friend: How to Wear Prints & Patterns post image

Summer is here, and with it comes an exuberant crop of patterned shirts to bring vacation vibes to your every endeavor. The options are so good this season that even men who traditionally steer clear of prints might be tempted to give them a try. If you find yourself in this situation, allow us to suggest three ways to wear them well.

1. Simple pattern, subdued color

If big patterns feel a little outside your wheelhouse, ease into them with a neutral palette and simple geometric shapes.

2. Complex pattern, subdued color

Hawaiian shirts look positively dapper in duotone. Pair with trim-fit chinos for a look Cary Grant would be proud to wear.

3. Complex patterns, bold color

For your favorite ‘more is more’ shirts, be sure to ground your look with pants in a neutral hue.

Mixed Bags: The Shapes of Summer 2018 Hit the Streets post image

Come summer, even as we peel away layers to increase vitamin D absorption, we want to add a few new pieces as well. For a quick update that won’t block the sunshine, pick up one of these new handbag styles we spotted on the streets of NYC. Whether it’s a jaunty straw circle or a cool isosceles, these new bag shapes are the perfect place to store your sunscreen and sunnies.

Fine Fibers

Straw bags

Lightweight and lovely, straw bags are no longer just relegated to the beach or park picnics. Elevated styles feature rhinestones and leatherwork, and are completely appropriate for evening events. Designers are playing with all sorts of shapes from pineapples to piggies too, upping the fun with this malleable material.

Most styles also have crossbody or chain straps that you can swing over your shoulder, if you’re inclined to let go of that gilt hilt.

7 Wedding Day Beauty Emergencies and How to Handle Them

7 Wedding Day Beauty Emergencies and How to Handle Them post image

Call it Murphy’s law or call it bad luck, but beauty blunders can strike at any moment, even on your wedding day. Whether you’re the bride or one of her guests, it’s important to be prepared for any unexpected twists, turns and blemishes that may occur by stocking your clutch with the necessary fixes. Here, we’ve tackled the most common wedding-day crises so you can plan ahead.

Charlotte Tilbury Color Chameleon color morphing eyeshadow pencil and Yves Saint Laurent volume effect Faux Cils mascara in a Nordstrom woven cork & faux leather clutch.

I’VE CRIED OFF MY EYE MAKEUP—HOW DO I REAPPLY QUICKLY?

It’s difficult not to get teary-eyed during the ceremony, so have a Charlotte Tilbury eyeshadow stick on hand for an easy-to-apply smoky eye  (Champagne Diamonds is a beautifully versatile shade). Once dry, the incredibly long-wearing, transfer- and crease-resistant formula will not move, so we recommend applying each eye carefully with a steady hand.

Follow up with a waterproof mascara, like YSL’s Faux Cils mascara. Not only will it stay in place if tears return, but it’ll also hold the shape of the lashes for a curl that won’t quit.

Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage, Urban Decay Primer Potion and Indie Lee blemish stick in Chelsea28 Fleur convertible faux leather wristlet.

I WOKE UP WITH A ZIT—WHAT DO I DO?!

Don’t panic, but do make sure to clean the area completely before applying skin care or makeup. Then treat the area with the Indie Lee blemish stick, which attacks the zit with salicylic and glycolic acid in a completely transparent formula. Take it with you in your clutch and continue discreetly treating throughout the day, even over makeup.

To tone down the redness, first apply Urban Decay’s eyeshadow primer to the infected area. It’s not just for eyeshadow—the primer will help secure your concealer, ensuring that your breakout stays covered in photos. Finally, Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage full-coverage concealer will leave the area looking flawless. Use the two shades to create an undetectable mask that seamlessly blends with your skin.

Tom Ford lip lacquer, Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax rollerball and Goldirocks x Nordstrom beauty rocks crystal set in a Rebecca Minkoff Leo chevron stripe envelope clutch.

I HAVE TO GIVE A SPEECH AND I’M A BUNDLE OF NERVES!

Instead of turning to champagne for courage, we recommend some natural alternatives. This convenient rollerball is easy to stash in your clutch and helps ease your stage fright with the calming powers of vetiver, chamomile and sandalwood. Apply on your pressure points (like the inside of your wrist, or the back of your neck) and inhale the soothing scent in a deep, cleansing breath.

Alternatively, a token of serenity could be just the thing to help calm your anxiety. Goldirocks crystals all work in harmony to rejuvenate your spirit, but rainbow moonstone and gold pyrite, in particular, can help boost self-confidence and overcome your nerves. Finally, bring along Tom Ford gloss for luxuriously shiny lips as you enlighten guests with funny anecdotes about the bride.

Oribe dry texturizing spray, Moroccanoil Treatment and OUAI anti-frizz smoothing sheets in a Pop & Suki leather camera bag.

OF ALL THE DAYS TO HAVE A BAD HAIR DAY…

Oribe dry texturizing spray will help you get your volume back. Spray at the roots and tousle hair for lift and lasting texture without any unsightly white-powder residue. Keep in mind, textured hair shouldn’t be frizzy. For that, carry a few of OUAI’s anti-frizz sheets to smooth over the ends of the hair.

For even softer, touchable tresses, consider a small bottle of Moroccanoil’s signature treatment. It’ll hydrate your ends, tame flyways and leave the hair with an enviable shine.

Clé de Peau Beauté concealer, Bobbi Brown corrector and beautyblender micro.mini makeup sponge applicator in a Nordstrom Abstract Lace minaudière.

I WAS UP LATE CONSOLING THE BRIDE WITH COLD FEET. HOW CAN I COVER THESE DARK CIRCLES?

Before applying any makeup, use Origins GinZing eye cream to brighten and de-puff the under-eye with a dose of caffeine and light-reflecting mica. Follow that with Bobbi Brown’s corrector, which uses pink tones to cancel the dark purple circles that are making you look tired. Clé de Peau concealer glides perfectly on top for super full coverage that won’t look cakey—just make sure you’ve properly blended each layer with a damp beautyblender before adding the next.

Deborah Lippmann Addicted to Speed ultra quick dry topcoat, butter LONDON Scrubbers nail polish remover, Dior Crème Abricot nail cream, Chanel Le Vernis longwear nail colour in 167 Ballerina in a Nordstrom embellished envelope clutch.

I CHIPPED MY MANICURE FIXING THE BRIDE’S BOUQUET.

Keeping your wedding-polish shade in your clutch is a safe bet (our favorite wedding-day shade is Chanel’s Ballerina), as is having a butter LONDON’s scrubber sachet, just in case. It will take off your chipped lacquer as well as prep the nail for a fresh coat.

Once you’ve reapplied your polish, use Deborah Lippmann’s quick dry so that you can get back on the dance floor as fast as possible. To give your speedy, dinner-table manicure a professional salon appearance, use Dior’s nail cream to hydrate the cuticles as often as needed.

Hourglass Ambient Diffused Light palette and MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ finishing mist in a MARC JACOBS Snapshot leather wallet on a chain.

MY SKIN LOOKS AS DULL AS THE GROOMSMAN’S JOKES.

In the days leading up to any major event, make sure to drink plenty of water, get as much sleep as possible and be loyal to the products that agree with your skin—now is not the time to experiment. Despite your best efforts though, your complexion may still need a boost of light on the day of. Start with BECCA’s First Light priming filter before applying makeup in the morning, but have the Hourglass diffused light palette on standby in your clutch. The trio includes a glowy blush (Diffused Heat), a radiance-enhancing bronzer (Diffused Bronze Light) and a soft-focus finishing powder (Diffused Light) for easy touchups throughout the evening.

For added hydration, your travel-size MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ provides a cooling spritz of moisture while also leaving behind a dewy finish on the skin. Mist anytime, even over makeup—the lightweight, mineral-rich formula makes makeup last longer and look freshly applied, even after hours of wear.

Dr. Raj Teaches Us About Our Skin’s Microbiome

Dr. Raj Teaches Us About Our Skin’s Microbiome post image

Despite regimented facials and thorough double cleanses, what happens in your gut will eventually show on your skin. “If the good and bad bacteria aren’t balanced in your gut and intestines, you can develop conditions like acne, redness, psoriasis, dry skin and eczema,” says Dr. Roshini Raj, the woman behind TULA Probiotic Skincare. The  gastroenterologist with glowing skin is a big believer in approaching beauty from the inside out. Her range of prebiotic- and probiotic-infused skin care is free of toxins and full of skin-loving superfoods, like blueberries, turmeric and vitamin C, which maintain a healthy skin microbiome and improve skin barrier function.

So what is a microbiome, exactly? To better understand the connection between the skin and the gut and how this can all result in a breakout, we called on Dr. Raj to help us understand what’s going on inside our bodies, and therefore, on our skin’s surface. And most urgently, how do we correct an imbalance? Her advice and her beauty breakdown, ahead.

Dr. Raj, Founder of TULA Probiotic Skincare

MICROBIOMES

“The average human has over 100 trillion microbes in and on their body. Microbiome refers to the complete set of genes that are contained in microscopic bacterial ecosystems known as microbiota,” explains Dr. Raj. “Humans are actually made up of more microbial cells than human cells by weight, and these microbial organisms affect nearly every human bodily process. Aging, digestion, the immune system, mood and cognitive function are all related to microbiomes.”

An imbalance of the skin’s microbiome is what leads to redness, irritation, breakouts, dry skin and many other undesirable skin conditions—all of which Dr. Raj hopes to correct with her targeted skin care. Just as they calm and heal the gut, probiotics act as a protective layer on the skin, fighting free radicals and bad bacteria and locking in moisture for a more radiant appearance. “Prebiotics support the healthy bacteria on skin while the probiotics that we formulate help to improve skin barrier function and increase cell turnover. It is important to make sure that the healthy bacteria on skin are thriving in order to keep the bad bacteria that can cause a number of skin grievances in check.”

THE SKIN BARRIER

The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the skin. “This barrier is made up of cells and lipids which protect the skin from harmful microorganisms. The skin barrier also locks in essential moisture from electrolytes and water, keeps inflammation under control, and strengthens the skin’s natural immunity,” says Dr. Raj.

Needless to say, an impaired skin barrier can be problematic, which is why Dr. Raj takes careful consideration when treating her own skin. “One of the most important things you can do is to cleanse with a nonstripping cleanser and toner,” she advises. “I would stay away from alcohol-based cleansers and toners, which kill the good bacteria along with the bad, and strip skin, leaving it vulnerable to an overgrowth of bad bacteria.” Instead, she says, look for pH balanced cleansers and toners that will gently cleanse the skin without stripping it of its good bacteria and natural skin barrier function. “Skin is happiest at a slightly acidic pH of 4.5 to 5.5.” Tula’s Pro-Glycolic resurfacing gel is a gentle, pH-balanced, alcohol-free toner that will help to restore skin’s pH and balance skin.

TULA Probiotic Skincare Daily Probiotic and Skin Health Complex dietary supplement

Another thing to avoid? Phony health hacks. As we strive for more homeopathic treatments in the age of wellness, often we’re met with an onslaught of supplements, vitamins and cleansing juices—all promising beautiful skin and healthy guts, but few actually delivering on their word. So we asked Dr. Raj, Are all dietary supplements created equal? “The supplement industry is not as regulated as I would hope,” Dr. Raj enlightens us. “I didn’t want to just take a few random strains of probiotics and put them in a capsule to get to market quickly. I took over two years to research the best strains not only for gut and digestion health, but also for skin health.”

The result? A daily probiotic supplement with skin-loving ceramides and vitamin C, to help improve the skin’s texture, retain moisture and stay clear. It will also keep your digestive system running smoothly and is completely nontoxic. “Each ingredient was carefully sourced and I am proud of the formula we have on the market today. Integrity and transparency are very important to me.”

At the end of the day, Dr. Raj knows that luminous skin is a lifestyle habit, not magic-in-a-bottle. She keeps a gut-friendly diet, consuming calories from nutrient-dense, whole foods like vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, fermented foods and lean protein sources. “I take supplements, as well, including fish oil, turmeric and the TULA Daily Probiotic and Skin Health Complex. I also try to get a fair amount of exercise from hiking, yoga and barre.” Dr. Raj has made her career helping women on their own health journeys. Along with her effective superfood smoothie for the skin, she encourages women to take care of themselves, find balance in their day-to-day and never miss an opportunity for self-care.
