Welcome to Fashion Bytes, a cheat sheet for your favorite runway designers. From style inspirations to behind-the-scenes scoops, here’s everything worth knowing at New York Fashion Week Spring 2018.

The brand: Kate Spade New York

The history: Your favorite box bag was born in 1993, the brainchild of a former fashion editor named (yes) Kate Spade and her husband Andy. (They met while working at a menswear shop in Arizona. Adorable.) Home goods, shoes, and clothes soon followed, and now the brand even has a film studio, where it makes short (and usually hilarious) videos with female talent like Anna Kendrick, Anna Faris and even Gloria Steinem.

The designer: Deborah Lloyd got her master’s degree at London’s prestigious Royal College of Art, then worked for Kenzo and Burberry before heading stateside to helm Banana Republic’s design studio. In 2007, she became Kate Spade’s chief creative officer, and through her whimsical lens we’ve gotten bags that look like ice cream scoops, jewelry boxes and dinosaurs–plus satin cocktail dresses we can disguise as workwear with a jacket and flats.

Issa Rae at the show

The F-row: Actresses Elisabeth Moss and Jamie Chung were at the morning show, as was The Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine and Insecure star Issa Rae. (She wore our fall fashion crush, a poppy red lace dress that’s in stock right now. Love.)

The show: Backstage at Grand Central Station’s famous Oyster Bar, a New Orleans brass band was imported to play some hits, and the models started dancing well before they hit the runway. “This season, we start a road trip across America,” Lloyd said, “and since we’re starting in New Orleans, we want lots of texture, pops of vibrant color and, of course, things that let you stroll down the streets, sit outside and have a cocktail, and stay out late.” There were belt bags for a hands-free look, gingham for spring and summer picnics, and a straw purse shaped like an alligator. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

The verdict: “Clothes are a part of our favorite memories,” Lloyd said, “and we want to make things that will look amazing, will make you feel fantastic, and will bring you joy whenever you remember them. So for this collection, it’s like New Orleans says: let the good times roll.”
