Fall’s Best Dresses | The Realest

Why should models have all the fun? Each month we’re finding a “real woman”–i.e., of any shape and size–and giving her the model treatment in The Realest. We bring the wardrobe, stylist, photographer and blog editor–she brings her anything-but-one-size-fits-all personality and style–and we all head out on location for an IRL photo shoot. Meet Lori Ramon, a banker-slash-singer and vintage fashion lover with a stellar smile.

Lori took us on a tour of some beloved places in her Seattle neighborhood, Capitol Hill. Read on to get to know Lori, and see our stylist suggestions for some of our favorite dress silhouettes for fall.

On her style: “Being a Jewish American Princess from Texas, I learned at an early age what it felt like to be an outsider. The fact that my mother was probably also one of the only brazen feminists in our suburban neighborhood probably added to that, as well. I do think that my being so ‘different’ from everyone from the start definitely influenced my sense of self and fashion. I discovered that I enjoyed being somewhat unusual. It was freeing to be able to express myself without worrying so much about what others thought. I just try to remember the Golden Rule. Basically that’s all any of us need to do to live in a civilized society, right?”

I definitely express myself with my wardrobe. I love, love, love vintage clothing, especially dresses from the ’50s and ’60s. I really love the styles and the sounds of the early ’60s. Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra are my jams. (I also love Wanda Jackson and Patsy Cline.) I have had a number of vintage eyeglass frames over the years: I’m rather near-sighted, so my glasses combine fashion with function.”

I like to mix modern and vintage pieces, too…like skinny jeans with a vintage aloha shirt–I love tiki fashion! I also like to mix patterns. And I love dresses. So much easier than a skirt and blouse. A dress is an instant outfit! That said, I do love a black turtleneck and a skirt for fall.”

On her beauty routine: “My hair is crazy curly, and also very fine. I try to keep it in line, and I opt for short, fairly classic styles that require little maintenance. As far as my make-up goes, I try to keep it fairly minimal. A little mascara, a little eye-shadow, a bit of eyebrow pencil (so that I appear to have eyebrows) and lipstick. I never leave the house without lipstick. I like plums and reds, although my go-to lip product this spring and summer has been a tinted lip balm. I also never leave the house without polish on my nails. I tend to go for red or dark wine colors in the fall and winter, and then something a little lighter and more playful in the spring and summer.”

On her accessories: “I tend to keep my jewelry simple. Most of the time, I just wear studs in my ears…oh, and scarves. I love scarves. I learned to really get into them when I spent a year in Paris in grad school. The French women all looked so very chic with their scarves tied just-so. As for my shoes, I love stilettos, but I really can’t wear them anymore. These days, I tend toward flats (usually pointy-toed), oxfords and boots. Who doesn’t love boots? I love short boots, tall boots, cowboy boots. BOOTS!”

On what keeps Lori busy: “For the last many years, I worked in a bank, providing financial services (lending funds, sending wires, securing public deposits…all that fascinating stuff) to other financial institutions. Basically, I did a lot of math on the phone.

In my spare time, I sing in a country band called Purty Mouth. I also love to travel, especially to Europe. I enjoy cooking and hanging out with my friends, who happen to be the most amazing people ever. A group of us gets together a few times a year for “Drunken Book Club.” We pick a book that has also been made into a movie. After reading the book, we make a dinner party out of our meetings, where we discuss the book, watch the movie, and eat and drink. The food is generally based on the location of the plot of the books. For example, a while back, the book/movie was “Zorba the Greek,” so we chowed down on Greek food. It’s always a good time. Our next book is “Lord Jim,” by the way.”

On her band Purty Mouth:I’ve had the pleasure of singing with Purty Mouth for almost 10 years. It started out as a gay country band, fronted by two men who were a couple. Our music is very highly arranged; I’d say our style is a mix of traditional country and Elvis Costello-type pop, with a bit of rockabilly and punk thrown in for good measure. I think people are sometimes surprised by how serious we are as musicians, given the gender-bending nature of our lyrics.”

I think what I love most about my band is that it’s my family. We’re a very close-knit group of friends. That’s important when you rehearse twice a week. I’m also very proud of our original material (all written by [bandmates] Mikey and Graham), as well as how full our music sounds. I think we put on a heck of a show. I’m sure the fact that we all get along and are having so much fun ourselves has something to do with that.”

HAPPY HOUR – A-Line Dresses

On fall and how her style has evolved: “I can’t wait to start wearing tights and and turtlenecks again! I’m also very much looking forward to wearing jewel tones…and cashmere. And, being a dress fan, I’m eagerly awaiting wearing sweater dresses again.  Put on a sweater dress, a cashmere scarf, tights and a pair of boots, and you’re set. So comfy and so chic!”

I think my style has gotten simpler. I’m not sure if I’m getting lazier with age, but I just try to keep it simple. I definitely have pared down the jewelry I wear. I used to love to wear big flashy earrings and lots of bracelets, but now I rarely do. I never want to appear gaudy.  I also wear jeans more often than I used to, perhaps because the cuts are more flattering on me? I’m not sure. Maybe it just took me a while to figure out a way to wear them without feeling I looked sloppy. I also have toned down the make-up. There was a time when I could not get enough eye-liner. But now, I prefer a more natural look.”

Milan Fashion Week: It Bags with Caroline Issa

Número tres stop during Spring 2016 Fashion Month is Milan, Italy’s fashion, commercial and economic hub. As with New York and London before, designer Caroline Issa—a street-style guru, too—has selected an outfit that revolves around a handbag chosen for the chic city. And this suede, drawstring borsa is molto bella.

Loewe 'Flamenco Knot' Bag

Loewe Flamenco Knot suede & calfskin leather bag

“Milan is all about a classic look. Pale flannel suiting with a gorgeous white blouse perfectly blends in with the European jetset. I love how the Loewe bag’s natural coloring complements winter flannel,” says Issa.

Photographer Olivia Locher’s Summer Reading List | Pop-In@Nordstrom Welcomes Warby Parker

Everyone knows all the cool girls are really bookworms—what they don’t know is what all the cool bookworms are reading. You will now though; just follow along with this series as Pop-In@Nordstrom Welcomes Warby Parker helps us celebrate the literary life well lived.

There are photographers who document the world, and there are photographers who create worlds to document. New York-based lens pro Olivia Locher has a foot on both planets—and what a foot it is. (Her super charming DIY shoes caught our eye at the Jason Wu show at fall fashion week in New York.) At work for entities such as W magazine, she captures the drama and excitement of the backstage build-up at the shows, and while at work unraveling her own narratives and concepts, she stages series such as “I Fought the Law,” in which her subjects enact the fine art of breaking totally inane American rules from coast to coast. Exhibit A: “In Texas it is illegal for children to have unusual haircuts.” Huh? Yeah.

Here she is repping some Warby Parker sunnies, and here she is schooling us on texts of conceptual photography and ’70s ennui.

This is one of my all time favorite books. It’s one I find myself revisiting every summer. The story is incredibly captivating. It’s set during the ’70s in suburbia and reflects on five young beautiful sisters who are guarded by overprotective parents. The story is interesting because it’s told by a narrator who happens to be a group of adolescent neighbor boys who obsess over the girls from a distance. They try to piece everything together to get a picture of the girls’ story. Sofia Coppola’s movie is what encouraged me to read Eugenide’s book many years ago and I’m so happy I did. Both the book and film are very dear to me.
PNT-Cover-FINAL.indd
I owned this book for a few years but I’ve just started reading it. Several photographers were asked to write essays describing a situation where they regret not making a photograph. They describe the situation and completely hash out their idea, in result the photograph was taken conceptually though the essay. It’s a beautiful way to get a glimpse into the different photographer’s minds and practices. I’d recommend it to anyone who has an interest in photography.
Another book I constantly find myself revisiting is Allen Ginsberg’s Howl and Other Poems. It makes me long for a New York I know I’ll never understand or experience, unless someone invents a time machine.
olivia_locher_nordstrom
I’ve just started reading and am very much enjoying Barney and Beuys’ book. It examines similarities between the two mens work and practices. The links drawn between the different bodies of work is fascinating, and I’ve found a lot of the information here that isn’t available from other sources.
A book I’m looking forward to reading this summer is edited by Sheila Heti and other female editors, Women in Clothes. It’s a conversation among women of all walks of life about the subject of clothing. Some of the women include Kim Gordon, Cinder Sherman, Molly Ringwald. I’m really excited to dig into it.

Nira Arora, Virgin Radio Morning Host, Talks Up Her Town, Vancouver

Forget toast and scrambled eggs. Most mornings we scramble to get out the door in a reasonable outfit that won’t raise eyebrows at the office (clean, appropriate, not chosen from the floor). But Nira Arora, host at 94.5 Virgin Radio and mother of two, has to be a morning person. Not only is she cheery and perspicacious over the a.m. airwaves, but she always looks great too. In advance of our Vancouver store opening (did we mention it’s September 18?), we chatted with Arora about her look and her city. As usual, she had plenty to say.

Nira Arora

What three words would you use to describe Vancouver style?

Chic, casual, sophisticated.

With 24 hours in Vancouver and no plans, what would you do?

I would shop on West 4th Street, have lunch at Granville Island, go for a walk at Stanley Park, then have dinner and drinks in Gastown.

What is the best time of day in Vancouver?

I love the afternoon, the hustle and bustle of the city. It’s so lively on a patio, just people watching.

Do you have a favorite date-night destination?

Going for a walk at White Rock beach, hitting a patio with a view of the ocean for fish and chips and wine.

Tell us about your charity work in Vancouver.

I’ve volunteered with numerous charities in Vancouver, whether it’s hosting and MCing events, volunteering time or guest speaking. A few of the charities that I have worked with continuously are United Way, the Salvation Army, YMCA, the MS Society, Aga Khan Foundation, BC Cancer Society, BC Children’s Hospital, the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau and the food bank.

Do you have favorite designers to wear when attending charity events?

A few of my favorite pieces have been from Robert Rodriguez, Pink Tartan, Betsey Johnson, Obakki and BCBG.

Nira Arora and family

You have two beautiful little boys. What are your favorite things to do with them in Vancouver?

They love the Vancouver Aquarium, Science World, going to the beach for a picnic, playing in the sand and looking for rocks. We go exploring all the time. We take a couple of shovels, a bucket and binoculars and look for little critters in parks. They also love going to the local farms and seeing all the animals, and to Playland at the Pacific National Exhibition every summer.

Do they like shopping?

Not really, unless we are shopping for toys or shoes. The only other thing they enjoy is shopping for fruits and veggies at farmers markets.

You also have an English bulldog named BosKo. What are his favorite spots?

BosKo loves the dog beach at White Rock—by far that would be his favorite.

As excited as we are for our new Vancouver store? Catch up on our other city-centric coverage.
