The brand: Alice + Olivia
The history: When Alice + Olivia debuted their first collection in 2002, it was at the storied Russian Tea Room and featured celebrity models (including Paris Hilton) wearing designer, hand-painted pants… and not much else. The perfectly-cut trousers sold out fast, and paved the way for a full women’s collection, including clothes, shoes and accessories. Fast-forward fifteen years, and Alice + Olivia has kept their butt-boosting pants, their life-of-the-party vibe and their gallery cred, enlisting collaborators like the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat for limited-edition pieces.
The designer: Stacey Bendet graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and became a trusted designer at Theory, before venturing off on her own. Now a mother of three, the New York City native is also an avid art collector and a beauty muse, thanks to her signature dark eyeshadow and impossibly long lashes.
The show: We’d call it more of an extravaganza. Bendet enlisted famed female artists, including Lola Schnabel, Angelica Hicks and Jemima Kirke, to design the sets, which included oil paintings, sculpture, graffiti and even an entire kitchen made of felt by Lucy Sparrow. Models posed in abstract-print dresses, sequined statement tees, chunky floral heels and embroidered bell bottom jeans, while musician Scout Willis played guitar in a room designed by her sister, Tallulah.
The f-row: Paris and Nicky Hilton and Victoria Justice posed with the color-splashed collection, while Demi Moore sang along as her daughter Scout performed a soulful cover of Cher’s “Believe.” (Our mom likes to sing that song too, albeit in the car.)
The verdict: “I wanted to push myself this season, and so there are new techniques with the fabrics that make them more dynamic and special,” Bendet told us. “But the playful color, the joy of dressing up, the way we try to make clothes and life a work of art, that’s the thing that’ll never change.” We really hope not–wearing this collection will be a party in itself.
