Listen Up! Julee Cruise

If you’ve been keeping up on the last few weeks of Listen Up! it’s not hard to suss out the Halloween-y theme. And today is the big day! In anticipation, we’ve watched a ton of videos trying to find that perfect one that’s creepy without being completely terrifying (and not “Thriller“, even though we love the Michael Jackson zombie-pop opus as much as the next person). Guess what? It was not easy. So while the video for today’s pick, “Falling In Love”, leans a little towards romance rather than fear, all of its amorous scenes are culled from one of the freakiest (pre-American Horror Story) TV shows ever: Twin Peaks .

“Who Killed Laura Palmer?” was a question on the lips of plenty of people back in ’90 when the series—created by Mark Frost and the auteur-of-odd, David Lynch—first aired. The quirky creep-fest, set in a small Washington town, featured a cast of zany characters: some kind, some with murderous intent, but all intriguing. It’s a seriously revered cult classic and if you’ve never seen it, you might want to get on that—based on recent reports, Lynch and Co. are planning to revisit the town of Twin Peaks very soon.

The music from the series was equally eerie, much of it instrumental and scored by Lynch’s longtime collaborator, Angelo Badalamenti. But there were a few dreamy numbers performed by ethereal chanteuse Julee Cruise.

Cruise’s haunting voice and the song’s languid pace evoke a sense of serenity, though all the while something not quite right is bubbling under the surface. Or—in the case of the town of Twin Peaks—possibly waiting for you in the forest…spoiler! (Not really.)

Despite being most notable for her affiliation with the two-season show, Julee Cruise continued to release records, the most recent being 2011′s My Secret Life. No word yet on whether or not she’s coming back into the Lynchian fold for the upcoming reunion.

Hump Day

It’s all downhill from here, friends—in a good way.

Just wondering: when did you last watch Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of Rumble Fish by S.E. Hinton starring Matt Dillon, Diane Lane, and yeah, the director’s daughter Sofia? Her brief time on-screen as Lane’s little sister is a reminder that you just never know who’s going to go on to inspire Marc Jacobs, get their very own Louis Vuitton style, and craft epic, color-washed films about midwestern adolescents and lovelorn young adults who turn to karaoke in times of need.

Remembering Oscar de la Renta

Like a lot of memories, some of the details are foggy. These images are from sometime around 2000, when Oscar de la Renta visited our Seattle flagship upon the launch of one of his fragrance collections. The snapshots of the designer and our employees were taken at a luncheon that preceded an in-store appearance.

And while the date of this particular moment is lost, what remains—what will always remain—is how the designer made us feel.

“Mr. de la Renta was the consummate gentleman in the industry; he understood how to make women look and feel beautiful. His work created a visual fantasy of sorts, but always with a nod to realism so you could be confident and enjoy the moment. His work was never confused with any other designer as it had a true signature: subtle but always recognizable in shape, pattern, color and construction. He also was one of the first brave American couturiers to explore beyond evening into sportswear, although he was always known for his beautiful evening pieces. The definition of couture was in transition in the ’80s; the French previously owned the category, but Mr. de la Renta gave credibility to American couture and elevated it, not just in terms of the quality of his collections and his construction, but also because he was so charismatic and charming.” —Sue Patneaude, Executive Vice President, Designer Women’s Apparel (retired)

“What I remember about meeting Oscar de la Renta in 2002 is his smile and quiet elegance.” —Kylie Allensworth, Internal Communications Director

“Mr. de la Renta was the first guest designer to come into the Jeffrey Fashion Cares fund-raiser in Atlanta. He was amazing that night with all of his fans; he was such a gentleman in every way.” —Jeffrey Kalinsky, Vice President, Designer Fashion Director

“What’s amazing about Oscar is that his reach went beyond his own collection. He had such influence on and was such a positive role model for American designers. Not that they ever tried to be him, but he was so well thought of. The biggest compliment to him, and to the business he built, is that women wear his clothes because they make them feel beautiful and feminine; his brand can continue because there is such a strong sense of what Oscar de la Renta stands for. We just had a big luncheon for Oscar de la Renta clients here in Seattle. He was not here for that, but his business has never been bigger or better. Even though the brand has been around since the late ’60s, it remains relevant, and I think that says something.” —Jennifer Wheeler, Vice President, Corporate Merchandise Manager, Women’s Designer Apparel

Listen Up! Elisa Ambrigio

Superstition can be a powerful motivator. Black cats, walking under ladders, knocking on wood, broken mirrors…these and other superstitions seem to cause seemingly logical people to do some seriously weird things.

Well, lump us in that category because since we started posting Halloween-ish videos at the beginning of the month, we’ve decided it would be bad luck if we didn’t continue down that path—at least until next Friday, anyway.

And while today’s pick reads a bit more Scary Movie than Scream, it’s still totally spellbinding, thanks to the charming Elisa Ambrigio.

The singer-songwriter, who also plays with Connecticut noise-rock band Magik Markers, adds a dose of silliness to the Naomi Yang–directed clip for the sweet, VU-esque track “Superstitious,” which boasts a litany of bordering-on-OCD things she’d do to preserve what we’re going to assume is a very special relationship. We also like the video’s subtle homage—via a photo—to another seminal ’60s band: MC5.

Ambrigio’s debut solo effort, The Immoralist , is out now on Drag City Records.

We ♥ a Great Fit…and Ellen

Our complimentary bra fittings are usually shenanigans-free (and you leave knowing your perfect size), but The Ellen DeGeneres Show usually isn’t behind the scenes with hidden cameras setting booby traps. Kudos to our Fit Specialist Serena, who handled this situation with aplomb.

Listen Up! Ty Segall

BOO! It’s that time of year again. Costumes, candy, pumpkin carving, corn mazes, scary movies—it’s October! And though it’s true the 31st is still a few weeks away, when we caught this new video from Ty Segall we couldn’t help but get just a little giddy about Halloween.

In the Matt Yoka–directed video for “The Singer,” Segall is surrounded by ghostly bandmates who help him belt out the seriously awesome, Beatles-meets-T. Rex tune. At one point, Segall even levitates. Spooky!

In the past Segall’s stuff has been a little heavier (he’s also in a band called Fuzz if that gives you an idea of how he can shred) and while we’re all for that, we’re also in love with this perfect slice of glammy pop.

Ty Segall’s latest record, Manipulator, is out now on Drag City Records.

Backstage Beauty: M·A·C’s Fashion Week Recap

M·A·C shares the trade secrets and products behind the looks they designed for the runways at Fashion Week.

MAC-Fashion-Week-Recap-2

At Rolando Santana, Director of Makeup Artistry Romero Jennings was inspired by the idea of a glowing, daytime smoky eye. Using eyeshadow creams, he created a satiny lavender shade that swept over the upper eyelid and wrapped around the outside corner of the eye to the lower eyelid. Vanilla Pigment was the star product for the skin. He accented cheekbones by buffing the product to reveal its pearl finish.

MAC-Fashion-Week-Recap-5

Karolyn Pho was inspired by organic textures and colors and wanted her models to look angelic and ethereal. Our focus was highlight and contour with M·A·C Mineralize Skinfinish to bring out the shape of the face and add a unique, broken liner from Liquidlast Liner in “Point Black,” which rested on the outside corner of the eye. Vanilla Pigment soared over the cheekbones and chin to add reflection to a nude face.

MAC-Fashion-Week-Recap-1

At The Blonds, we turned up the reflective textures to full blast. Makeup Artist Kabuki created the most flirtatious texture by pairing shiny gold and velvet black into one, kitty-kat liner. The star products were ‘Point Black’ in Liquidlast Liner and ‘Pure Show’ in Super Slick Liner. We added a subtle sheen to the cheekbone with ‘Melon’ Pigment and finished the look by overdrawing the lips with ‘Whirl’ Lip Pencil for maximum sensuality.

MAC-Fashion-Week-Recap-4

Juan Carlos Obando wanted his models to look like they were “wild, safari girls in the city.” Key Artist Serge Hodonou created a lush, hydrated skin by using Face and Body Foundation and Mineralize Charged Water Face and Body Lotion. We enhanced the redness around the models eyes using a scant amount of ‘Costa Riche’ Eye Kohl and reduced the intensity by buffing with a #239 Brush. Serge finished by adding the most expensive looking shine to the eyes with Eye Gloss in ‘Medoc’ and ‘Pearl Varnish.’ This gave the models a high-tech bronze with an effortless wearability.
