Nicole and Brent wed in the quaint port of call of Roche Harbor Resort on San Juan Island in Washington State, surrounded by their loved ones and the Salish Sea.

Why did you chose the venue?

We love the water, the outdoors and the islands around Washington. We fell in love with Roche Harbor, and San Juan Island, the first time we visited. As we explored options, we knew we wanted an outdoor venue and a beautiful place that would showcase the Pacific Northwest not only for our local guests but for those traveling … and Roche Harbor was just perfect for that.

What was your theme and inspiration?

The island inspired a bit of a nautical theme, shown in small details like the navy-and-white-striped ribbon on our bouquets, flower vases and cake, along with the incorporation of an anchor on our invites and program. The groomsmen also wore navy suits and the bridesmaids wore light-blue dresses. My husband works for a family business that grows tulips and lilies, so I was inspired by certain tulip and lily colors (pink, orange, white) and we incorporated those flowers as much as possible. We also gave tulip bulbs as our favor, a DIY where we added tulip bulbs to small burlap pouches with a “Let Love Grow” tag.

Do you have favorite moments from the day?

Honestly, the entire weekend was so special! To be surrounded by our favorite people, each who have uniquely impacted our lives, was such a treat. We also wrote our own vows and to hear those and recite those for the first time in front of all our loved ones was truly special. My dad was unable to attend the wedding and I lost my mom at a young age, so my aunt (my mom’s sister) walked me down the aisle. No one would have known, but she was recovering from her second bout with breast cancer. So, having her there in general was so meaningful, and having her walk me down the aisle was definitely a moment I’ll never forget and a small tribute to my mom.

Tell us about your dress. What made you know it was “the one?”

My future mother-in-law met me downtown for coffee, and we happened to be in Nordstrom when she asked if I had looked there for dresses. I thought that everything at Nordstrom was out of my price range, but we decided to go to the Wedding Suite for the fun of it. As I was perusing dresses, I came across a designer I had seen elsewhere that I really liked (Willowby) and asked if they carried any other styles from that brand. The stylist said she had one more in the back and then came back with the Ridley Gown—my dress! I fell in love with the laser-cut lace and the low back, plus it was in my price range!

What other details made your day special?

I also found BOSS groom and groomsmen suits, Show Me Your Mumu bridesmaid dresses and bridesmaids gifts (Nordstrom Lingerie Moonlight Pajamas) at Nordstrom.

Do you have any advice for other brides-to-be, or something you wish you’d known?

For me personally, I was surprised by the amount of anxiety I had in the days leading up to the wedding and the day of the wedding. Once I walked down the aisle, we recited our vows and the ceremony was complete, there was a huge feeling of peace, excitement and pure joy. Remember that your wedding day will always be special, but it is just one day, that it likely won’t go perfectly as planned. And the biggest thing … remember to have fun.

 Where was the honeymoon?

We spent a couple of nights after the wedding weekend on Orcas Island and then took a delayed honeymoon to Italy, Croatia and Greece. It was amazing! It was really nice to have something else to look forward to, with the delayed honeymoon!

Menswear Icon Nick Wooster Talks Sneakers, Style and What Every Man Should Have in His Closet

Menswear Icon Nick Wooster Talks Sneakers, Style and What Every Man Should Have in His Closet post image

Mr. Nick Wooster has been called an Internet superhero and the ‘alpha male of American street style.’ Some fans even call him Woost God. He’s got upwards of half-a-million followers on Instagram, and photographers hound him at Fashion Week and Pitti Uomo. It’s safe to say he knows a thing or two about style.

Mr. Wooster can also boast (if he were so inclined) 30 years of experience as a fashion director and creative consultant at highbrow retailers around the world. So it’s safe to say he knows a thing or two about luxury.

Which is why his new collaboration with Brooklyn-based sneaker company GREATS is so exciting. From luxurious Italian craftsmanship to Instagram-worthy designs, these bold, playful shoes are made to be enjoyed. We caught up with him between promotional appearances for the Nick Wooster x GREATS collection to ask him a few questions about shoes, style and what every man needs in his closet.

What’s the philosophy behind this collection?

The philosophy behind this collection is merely something I’d want to wear, something I don’t have in my closet. And that’s true for any collaboration I’ve ever done or any article of clothing I’ve ever designed. A collaboration is an opportunity to make something I hope is a little bit different and a little bit unexpected. And always something that I want to wear.

Do you have a favorite? Or is that like picking a favorite baby?

Well, I’m not a parent and I never will be. But I imagine that, as a parent, you’re probably always going to favor one more than the other at a certain time. Let’s see. I love the animal prints. I love all three equally. But I also love the shoe that I’m wearing, the 3M dots in black. And I really like the pink one. It depends on what I’m wearing. But…yeah, I think the animal prints are probably my favorite. Today.

GREATS x Nick Wooster

Mr. Nick Wooster’s favorites on July 23, 2018.

These are bold shoes. How do you recommend styling them?

Styling boils down to a simple formula: If everything is classic, like a white shirt and khaki pants, or a grey sweater and grey pants, then you can do something interesting with the footwear. Keep it simple on top and then you can experiment.

With those three animal prints, the entry one is the Royale. It’s a simple tie shoe that is totally understandable, but in a slightly aggressive pattern. The second way would be the Pronto runner in the multi-pattern. The Genoa clog is the most adventurous way to go. But with any of them I recommend that you keep your clothes super simple.

The Royale and the Pronto—levels 1 and 2 on the Wooster Scale, respectively.

When you’re helping a man build a wardrobe, what are the foundational pieces you recommend?

It’s so not interesting, because it really boils down to basics. I tell guys to get:

• White and blue button-up shirts
A polo
Dark denim
• A good pair of chinos
Cashmere sweaters in navy, grey and black
• A peacoat for the winter

That’s about all you need. Once you have that base, then you can start to experiment with something. It might be the shoes, it might be the T-shirt, it might be the belt. That’s another thing I recommend: one simple, really good belt.

Another thing I always say: Buy the best you can afford. For most of my life I’ve been up and down with my ability to purchase. And when times are lean, you want those great things that you can always fall back on. So when you’re able to invest, get the best you possibly can in that moment. But don’t put yourself in jeopardy because of it.

Simple up top, 3M dots in white on the bottom.

What do you look for in a shoe?

Well, hopefully it fits. I’m not kidding. I’ve bought many shoes that don’t fit because I just had to have them. It never works out. Beyond fit, for me it’s if it sparks an emotion. The emotion can be something super simple, like excitement over a perfect pair of black or brown shoes. By the way, if you find a good brown shoe, buy it. Brown is really hard to do well.

With sneakers, just buy the ones that fit the best. Once you find a style you like, you can splash out on materials like animal skin or a fluorescent color, or maybe pink, maybe something 3M.

But the shoe has got to fit and feel comfortable. If it doesn’t do that in the store, it’s not going to do that later. Trust me. I’ve learned this the hard way. [Editor’s note: See our dress shoe fit guide for tips.]

Signing a Pronto for a fan at our flagship store in downtown Seattle.

Where do you see menswear going right now?

The casualization of fashion has forever changed how we dress. The good news is that it’s more democratic and more accessible than it’s ever been. The bad news is that you can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube. I hear people say, ‘Oh, tailoring’s going to come back.’ Eh. Probably not.

And that’s sad to me because when I had my first job back in 1976, I wore a suit to work and to clean the bathroom and to mow the yard. That was what you did. And that was a little stupid. But it does make me sad that Goodyear-welted leather-soled shoes and tailored clothing don’t have the same resonance that they did twenty-five years ago.

But by the same token it means that we’re moving on. So menswear is and will continue to be more democratic, more accessible and more casual. That’s the reality of the situation. And I’m okay with that.

In Seattle, feeling okay about the casualization of menswear.

Inside M2Malletier’s Beautiful Brutalist Studio

La Fabrica by Ricardo Bofill

Inside M2Malletier’s Beautiful Brutalist Studio post image

That fashion is a trade is often downplayed. Most designers of clothing and accessories choose to emphasize the artistry of their work, the conception, creation and display of their wares. That’s understandable and interesting, but so much of the industry involves measuring and cutting, skilled workers, factory floors, machinery and supply chains—not so sexy but absolutely essential.

Art and trade are on full display at the 1,000-square-foot studio of design darlings Marcela Velez and Melissa Losada of M2Malletier. The duo launched their well-received and coveted collection of clearly sexy handbags in Barcelona, where they made a home for themselves in a pre-World War I cement factory that was renovated by Spanish starchitect Ricardo Bofill. The building, called La Fábrica, resembles a brutalist Gothic castle—in other words, it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

MELISSA LOSADA AND MARCELA VELEZ of M2Malletier

“Melissa is now based in London and I’m based in our office in Barcelona, but we talk all day long,” said Velez, when we connected with her. “I’m more focused on the business side and Melissa on all the design matters.” The two hail from Colombia, but met at a party when they both were attending Parsons School of Design in New York City. Along with their nationality, their shared love of sleek luggage construction, history and architecture attracted them to each other, inspiring them to launch a line of handbags in 2012. “M2Malletier combines influences from the world of architecture with the world of history,” said Velez. “The brand pays homage to iconic, pioneering women, such as one of the 20th century’s most daring and influential patrons of the arts, Vicomtesse Marie-Laure de Noailles.”

La Fabrica by Ricardo Bofill

M2Malletier bags are immediately identifiable by their graceful metal handle that the designers call ‘the needle.’ “We wanted something different, something that would stand out from the rest,” said Velez. This eye-catching element has won the adoration of fashion fans, who carry the elegant bag with its gilt hilt day and night. The signature hardware was influenced by medieval armor and period medical tools. “Medieval medical instruments inspired us,” Velez said.

“This handle is a hallmark of M2Malletier and perfectly articulates the brand’s unforgettable glamour and avant-garde spontaneity.”

La Fabrica by Ricardo Bofill

Situating their studio in La Fábrica was a clear choice for Losada and Velez; Bofill is Losada’s father-in-law, after all, and they cite him as one of their influences. “Our brand philosophy recalls the works from French interior designer Jean-Michel Frank and Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill,” said Velez. To the designers, these artists exemplify the unification of minimalism and surrealism, the resolution of an artistic tension of new and old worlds.

La Fabrica by Ricardo Bofill

“Our corner of La Fábrica is modest, under 1,000 square feet including the airy attached pied-à-terre with a bedroom that looks out on the olive garden,” Velez said. “It has a Rapunzel-like charm of its own. Billowing ivory floor-to-ceiling curtains create ethereal contrast with the classical arches, and there are pops of unexpected color.” La Fábrica houses Bofill’s office and home, too.

M2Malletier headquarters

“The vibe and eclectic energy that this space exudes inspires us to create and design new styles every season to keep our clients satisfied,” she continued, “yet always be true to our brand image.”

In addition to La Fábrica, here are some of Marcela Velez’s favorite Barcelona spots:

To relax: The beachside town of Sitges and SOFIA Hotel and Spa Barcelona

How Influencer Gala Gonzalez Is Spending Her Summer (with Foreign Travel, Fashion, Food and Flats)

Gala Gonzalez

How Influencer Gala Gonzalez Is Spending Her Summer (with Foreign Travel, Fashion, Food and Flats) post image

On Spanish style influencer Gala Gonzalez’s summer agenda: travel to 18 destinations, eat authentic Mexican food (in Mexico), lots of skin moisturizer, and French electro-pop. Throughout this, the Amlul blogger will be packing Gala sandals, designed by Pedro García. Her namesake shoes are just the latest in an ongoing collaboration between Gonzalez and fellow Spaniards Mila and Pedro García. “I have a deep personal relationship with them,” Gala says. “Also, I’m truly happy to spread a Spanish brand worldwide!” It’s an obvious fit for the fashionable brunette beauty who favors comfortable flats and fun times. “I feel very identified with their ‘think party, wear daily’ philosophy,” she says.

Where will you be wearing your Gala sandals this summer?

So far, I’ve been spending quite some time on the Spanish Mediterranean coast this summer, in Cadaqués, where Dalí used to live, a magical, beautiful little town in Costa Brava, two hours north of Barcelona. Ibiza and Formentera are also amongst my 18 summer destinations.

Gala Gonzalez

What do you do on your travels?

I love to get immersed in local culture: discover traditions, fashion and food. I loved Mexican flavors during my last trip to Tulum!

How are you styling the Gala sandals?

They are perfect to wear with a more casual look, jeans to a little black dress. They are so versatile you can wear them from sunup to sundown, from a casual lunch with friends to a fancy dinner, or even a wedding!

Gala Gonzalez

Did you give input into the design? What did you suggest?

I’ve always loved Pedro’s “crystal classics” family of sandals—such an iconic group in his collections. For the Gala sandals, we worked together mostly on finding the right color combinations for both the satin and the crystals. There are so many different possibilities and subtle differences in tonalities. It was very interesting to see how colors have such a beautiful effect on such elegant materials like the silk satin and the Swarovski crystals, and how these can be combined in such an harmonic way.

Do you usually wear flats?

I’m a big fan of flat shoes. To be sexy and comfortable you don’t need to wear high heels, especially on those summer nights when all you want to do is dance with your friends all night long!

In the case of the Gala sandals, the strips that hug your feet make them really comfortable, and the cool and sophisticated touch comes from the hundreds of Swarovski crystals covering these soft silk strips.

What are you listening to this summer?

Currently, I’m obsessed with Lewis OfMan!

Vicarious Vacation: Our Print Director’s Trip to Iceland

Kim Chin's trip to Iceland

Vicarious Vacation: Our Print Director’s Trip to Iceland post image

Try as you might, sometimes you can’t get away. Whether it’s because your PTO bank is low or your bank account is, a holiday isn’t always on the horizon. When beset by a deficit of vacation days, it’s fun to live vicariously through your well-traveled pals.

This week we’ve been poring over the stunning pics of Nordstrom’s print design director, Kim Chin, who just returned from Iceland. We can practically feel the chill coming from her cool shots of this Nordic land famed for its hospitality, its geologic landscape and for giving the world Bjork (takk!). Find out where to dine, stay and swim, plus what to pack.

Who: Kim Chin, Nordstrom Design Director, Print Studio

Where: Reykjavik, Vik and Hof, Iceland
Kim Chin's trip to IcelandWhy did you choose this destination?

For its dynamic environment, sense of calm and design aesthetic.Kim Chin's trip to IcelandWhat were your favorite places to eat?

So many! Seafood is very much recommended: Matur og Drykkur for beautiful and tasty presentations; Snaps Bistro for the mood, delicious dinner and dessert; The Coocoo’s Nest for a cheeky cocktail; Sveitagrill Miu – Mia’s Country Grill kiosk for a hearty fish and chips on the road; and Saegreifinn by the harbor for lobster soup and grilled fresh fish.

Kim Chin's trip to IcelandYour favorite nightlife venue?

Nightlife was focused on a decent meal and great people watching while absorbing the city. Snaps Bistro had a consistent string of locals and tourists who were looking for that intimate but bustling bistro vibe.

Where did you stay?

We stayed mainly in Airbnbs while in Reykjavik and the south. When we travelled east, we stayed in the Fosshotel Núpar, where you could catch the northern lights from an amazing row of cabins with large windows facing the glaciers.

Kim Chin's trip to Iceland

What did you wear there?

Comfort is key and the weather is temperamental. For the city, versatile layering for all weather types was a must: a beanie, Rachel Comey camo trench, Prada tread boots, a pair of jeans, trainers and a wide range of socks. For the outdoors, a good pair of hiking boots, sunglasses, leggings and layers for those outdoor excursions. And a hair tie for those windy days!

Was there anything you wished you’d packed but didn’t?

My Bose mini speakers, for those remote cabins on stormy nights.Kim Chin's trip to IcelandYour favorite memory?

The discovery of “folk poet” sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson. Part of the Reykjavik Art Museum, Ásmundur Sveinsson’s mostly designed and constructed workshop/home was influenced by the circular designs of Middle Eastern mosques—my idea of a how I want to live. Sveinsson’s early artworks were heavily influenced by the people and community around him, and then evolved to abstracted cosmology. I loved the equal importance of the everyday activity versus unknown connectivity, tactile expression and mathematical construction.

And going for an early morning swim in one of the public outdoor thermal pools just a 10-minute walk from our Airbnb in Reykjavik. I would love to return both when it’s colder for the northern lights, or when it’s a bit warmer for the natural thermal lakes.

Kim Chin's trip to Iceland

An Ásmundur Sveinsson sculpture

Kim Chin's trip to Iceland

What was your favorite activity?

A glacier hike at Skaftafell and lake tour at Jökulsárlón Lake were experiences I didn’t quite expect—so peaceful but also alarming when guides were speaking to the effects and speed of global warming.

Kim Chin's trip to Iceland

What’s something cool that you learned?

The lack of native animals and minimal trees is due to the volcanic nature of the landscape. That, and everything being so clean and sparse, made you feel like you were living on another planet.

Recommended shoes?

Hiking boots, trainers, some smarter shoes for the city.

Kim Chin's trip to Iceland

If you were to move there, what do you think you’d do for a living?

Weigh the balance as a maker—ceramicist, painter or photographer—or something random like pony herder or location scout. Capitalize on the landscape, tranquility, time and space that the environment encourages.

Kim’s packing picks:
