Celebrity Makeup Artist Patrick Ta Shares His Pro Tips on Summer Skin Care (Hint: It’s All About La Mer)

When you think of the crème de la crème of skin care, La Mer is a logical go-to. We interviewed Patrick to get the rundown on his must-have La Mer products for summer and tips on how best to apply them. Turns out, we’ve been applying sunscreen and makeup in the wrong order for years. Consider us corrected.

What are the best pre-sun treatments for the face and body?

For the face, La Mer Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Daily UV Protecting Fluid. It’s so important for me to use sunscreen because I want to avoid getting sun spots as I age due to my family’s history of getting them early. For the body, I recommend the La Mer ‘Soleil de La Mer’ Reparative Body Sun Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 30. I also love this product because it simply is a great moisturizer for the whole body.

What’s the best way to apply SPF? Over or under makeup?

SPF should always be applied after your skin care routine but before your makeup application. If you’re being photographed, I would recommend not applying sunscreen until afterward to avoid flash-back.

Are there special precautions to take with the delicate eye, neck and chest areas?

When applying eye serums, use your ring finger as it provides the least amount of pressure around the eye area. When applying serums or lotions on the neck and chest area, use circular motions.

How should we be treating sunburns?

I use La Mer’s After Sun Enhancer. It has a gel-like texture that cools and soothes the skin. It also really helps bring the tan to the surface, leaving a beautiful sun-kissed glow.

After being out in the sun, what’s the best way to care for your face?

After washing my face, I LOVE to use the La Mer Renewal Oil, followed by The Moisturizing Gel Cream and The Eye Balm Intense. And of course, if you’re heading back outside, remember to put your Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Protecting Fluid back on!

Any other pro tips for summer skin care?

Keep your skin hydrated—the sun really dries it out. The Renewal Oil is my number one for this and can be used not just on the face but on the ends of your hair, on your hands and on your cuticles. And I can’t stress enough how important wearing an SPF is, even on days when the sun’s behind the clouds. So make sure any time you step outside, your skin is protected.

Hunter Boots Were Alive and Kicking at Glastonbury 2017 (Even Though It Barely Misted)

It was no mud bath this year. In fact, the Glastonbury Festival barely got a proper Sunday drizzle, which is far from usual for the legendarily mucky music fest (but given Britain’s recent heat wave, not a complete shocker). Nonetheless, tactical festival-goers donned their favorite Hunter wellies, just in case. And as you might expect, plenty of stylish celebs were in the mix, including Adwoa Aboah, Suki Waterhouse, Alexa Chung and Cara Delevingne.

Graham chatted with us about which top-drawer essentials in her collection are part of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and how she builds up her self-esteem through lingerie and nurturing self-talk.

What do you love about Nordstrom’s “one-of-a-kind” Anniversary Sale? Why is it a great time to shop?

I love the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale because you can find all of the quality brands you love at such great prices.

What do you usually shop during the sale?

I like to shop for investment pieces, like designer bags and shoes.

Tell us about your lingerie line, which is part of the sale.

My lingerie line with Addition Elle caters to the bold, confident woman who embraces and celebrates her shape. Our tagline is “Sexy is a state of mind.” My collections always feature sexy and sophisticated styles with luxurious details that you want to show off.

Why did you want to launch a lingerie line?

I started it for selfish reasons: I wanted to buy lingerie that was comfortable and sexy at the same time, but I found it hard to find the styles that I wanted in my size. There was clearly a need for my collection in the market, and I’m thankful that Addition Elle agreed and shared my vision.

What’s unique about your line?

We like to push the boundaries beyond your basic bras and underwear and incorporate elements that are meant to be seen, like bondage straps, mesh and creative necklines.

Which items are you really excited about? Which designs are essentials for any woman’s top drawer?

I’m honestly excited about and wear every piece! The bra is the foundation for every outfit, so most importantly, it’s crucial to have a few well-fitting bras in your collection. For something versatile that can be worn daily, I would recommend a bra from my Essentials collection or the Fatal Attraction bra, which is classic and feminine. My biggest pet peeve is having panty lines, so thongs are also essential!

How did it feel to be part of TIME’s 100?

Making the TIME 100 list was one of the biggest accomplishments of my life. To be recognized as one of the most influential in the world—not just in the fashion industry—was very humbling and a reminder that we need to continue promoting all types of diversity in the media.

What does “body positivity” mean to you?

Body positivity means celebrating beauty beyond size and encouraging everyone to love the skin that they are in.

What steps does society need to take to make this a universal reality?

We need to create what I like to call “body positive” spaces. In your group of friends, make it a rule to eliminate all negative talk about your bodies and physical appearance. Parents, speak positively in front of your children and talk to them about their bodies and insecurities. Buyers, put more extended sizes in your stores. Make your voices heard via social media and tell brands and media outlets that you want to see more diversity in their campaigns and advertisements.

What’s the key to your confidence? Do you have any words of wisdom or advice other women can apply to their lives?

Don’t get discouraged. Your self-confidence is something you have to work on every single day. Practice words of affirmation and speak life into your body. Your words have power!

Artist Kindah Khalidy Takes Her Color Palettes from Old Ladies’ Outfits and Buffed Graffiti

Vibrant, abstract symbols cover the surfaces on which San Franciscan artist Kindah Khalidy works. Although their meaning isn’t objectively discernible, they are undeniably cheery and upbeat. Khalidy paints on almost any blank canvas: clothes, walls, wrapping paper, furniture. Her optimistic, pop-art palette plays off the starkness of its backdrop.

One of the adorable faces of our Anniversary Sale, we caught up with Khalidy to chat about her charming art, her style and her shopping habits.

What do you love about Nordstrom’s “One-of-a-Kind” Anniversary Sale? Why is it a great time to shop?

It’s a fun time to finally grab those items I’ve been eyeing for a while. We’re pretty lucky with Bay Area weather in the sense that you can wear clothes for all seasons, year round. Cue the sweaters.

What do you usually shop during the sale?

As I get older, I’m more drawn to staple items for easy dressing. I’m always on the hunt for good shoes!

Which artists have most inspired you?

I really love the work of Francis Bacon and Hans Hofmann.

You’re also really inspired by music. Who are you listening to now when you paint?

Lately, it’s been a mix of Paul Simon, [the] Drive soundtrack, Kendrick Lamar and D.R.A.M.

Your paintings are very colorful. How do you invent and combine your palettes?

I LOVE color combinations, and choosing a palette never fails to feel exciting to me. I’m really inspired by the ensembles of old ladies—they’re often really bold in their outfits. My other main inspiration would be buffed graffiti around the city; it turns into art in itself, and it’s something that I love to document.

What is your favorite color to wear?

Fluorescent peach. Mostly, I’m caught wearing white tees and black jeans.

Do you have a favorite item of clothing?

Yes! It’s a buttery ACNE Studios leather jacket with a removable collar. It has so many pockets; I can never have enough pockets.

You create textiles for accessories like clutches and clothes. What makes a print wearable?

I like being able to create options for people to wear and expand upon how they can express themselves with prints. With my fine art paintings, they’re meant to be looked at for a long time and slowly taken in. With wearable prints, the message has got to get through quicker. I hope that even if one of my prints is seen on the street for 5 seconds, that it sparks the imagination in some way. I spend a lot of time thinking about how the patterns will interact with the person wearing or holding them.

What are you working on now?

A really big mural.

Quarterbacks aren’t supposed to seem oddly clear-headed during what is technically called a “scramble.” But with Russell Wilson, what is really a run for his life often ends up looking like a jog through the park. We’re blown away by his abilities and especially his grace under fire.

You are a busy guy. How do you juggle being a top tier NFL Quarterback and an active involved entrepreneur?

Three things are essential to creating success. First, it starts with having a vision of what it is you want to accomplish. Second, it’s about surrounding yourself with a great team: people who are smart, can think creatively, and who have a strong internal drive to do what is necessary to be successful. Lastly, it’s about execution, trusting your gut and never stopping until the job is done. At Good Man Brand, we are a small team where everyone wears multiple hats, but we all work towards one unified vision of making products that make living life easier. We are relentless in our efforts to create solutions for our customers based on that vision.

We are curious, what’s are the differences preparing for a NFL defense versus preparing for competition in business

There are many similarities between the two. As is the case in all professional sports, the competition in the NFL is fierce. To give yourself and your team the best chance for the win it is a matter of combining preparation and hard work so that you can execute at the highest levels of your ability.  Most often success and failure are separated by a very thin line. With business, knowing your competition is extremely important, every detail matters: what they’re the best at, what their opportunities are, even knowing what their fears might be. 

I approach game preparation and business opportunities exactly the same way. There is a process flow that I follow that gives me the edge to succeed. This requires tremendous preparation so that when the opportunity emerges we are on the balls of our feet ready to meet the challenge head-on and prevail. It’s easier said than done, but those that are willing to work both hard and smart usually will come out on top.

We applaud your involvement with Seattle Children’s Hospital and general commitment to giving back. Why is philanthropy important to you?

I’ve been very blessed throughout my life but I’ve also endured hardship. We all have. It’s important to stay focused on helping others any way we can. Not only does it bring me joy to see the smiling faces of the children at Seattle Children’s but it warms my heart knowing that the work we are doing can and hopefully will save their lives. There is no greater feeling.

Let’s talk about your personal life: What can you tell us about your Great Danes? What do you love most about those dogs?

Prince and Namoi are great. They’re loyal, loving and part of the family. Not only do they make us laugh everyday but, man, can they provide some serious entertainment with their wrestling matches. As any dog owner knows, they really are your best friend. They’ll love you no matter what, they greet you with the warmest welcome and they’re always around when you need them most.

What’s your favorite Ciara song?

All of them.

Any new-father jitters?

No way, being a dad is one of the greatest blessings in the world.
