On the day we met emerging model Mia Rae at Nordstrom’s Lower Manhattan photo studio, she had just been Instagrammed by Wmag due to a co-starring role in a killer new online profile on hot new brands—including, incidentally, SPACE‘s very own Colovos. Despite having been seen and ‘liked’ by the fashion mag’s 2.1 million followers, she was pretty chill.

As we get to talking, it’s clear that’s just her nature. But there must be exceptions, right? She tells me about what will probably go down as her big break—a group shoot with famed super stylist Edward Enninful and photo duo Mert and Marcus, for W magazine, in which she got to be the one screaming, effusive Chanel girl in a sea of red. Slightly less chill.
But all in all, this is an LA-by-way-of-small-town-Arizona girl with her head squarely on her shoulders. We took a little bit of time to get to know her and take some pictures just for the fun of it amid the hustle and bustle of Fashion Week.
For a couple of girls who were raised in a tiny little place called Pine Top where they rode horses and didn’t really think too much about fashion, both Mia and her sister, the singer and musician Zella Day, have managed to step out into the world pretty terrifically. They’re super close; although Zella just got back from touring with Michael Franti and Miike Snow, they talk every day.
Here are a few more things she does just about every day.
Favorite music to listen to during shoots: Courtney Barnett
Favorite snack after a long day: Popcorn and hot sauce
Favorite way to exercise and work off steam: During Fashion Week, running and kick boxing—any other time, hot yoga or walking
Go-to yoga pose: A prolonged backbend
Last book she read: East of Eden by John Steinbeck
Movie she could watch over and over: Clockwork Orange (she was Alex for Halloween)
TV Show to veg out on: Grey’s Anatomy or American Horror Story
