To embrace Alessandro Michele’s Gucci is to embrace tidy chaos. And that’s easy to do, even for the most buttoned-down of dressers, in part because of Michele’s ability to make an uncanny mix of texture, print, cut and embellishment combine in a single, perfectly styled look. In short, Gucci’s command of maximalist-cool isn’t going anywhere soon.

Not after the parade of monochromatic looks in delightfully odd hues, mesh-veiled Victorian hats paired with granny glasses, sequined cheongsams layered with Renaissance-era jewels, mutton-sleeved varsity jumpers—and so many other notable motifs that it would be difficult to enumerate them without droning—that walked the runway in Milan yesterday. On paper, this is a collection that reads like an unedited romp through entire eras, a sure disaster for a designer less comfortable with sartorial orchestration.
But in Michele’s hands these looks serve our collective desire to mix and match, and to live colorfully and well. Alessandro Michele’s Gucci girl may be amenable to granny-chic, but she isn’t too busy clutching her pearls to get her hands dirty with living.
