Prom Night Beauty: Three Bold Makeup Looks for Your Big Night Out

The quintessential high school experience and social highlight of the spring semester, prom comes with a lot of pressure. Luckily, we have you covered in the dress category, but what about your makeup?

Be the belle of the ball in one of our easy-to-recreate beauty looks. From ombré lips to metallic eyes, ahead, we give you step-by-step application tips and product recommendations for selfie-approved makeup that won’t melt on the dance floor.

The Hi-Def Lip

1. Start by applying a layer of bareMinerals tinted gel moisturizer for even hydration and an allover glow.
2. Achieving flawless and symmetrical winged eyeliner can be a challenge, so move onto eye makeup next and erase mistakes freely without disrupting concealer or highlighter. To get started, swipe a light wash of MAC eyeshadow in Malt over the lids for a one-toned matte base that will set the stage for liner.
3. To get the perfect cat-eye, start your flick in the outer corner, where the upper and lower lash lines meet, using Stila Stay All Day waterproof liquid liner in black. The wing should follow the natural shape of the lower lash line, extending upward and outward into a neat point. Next, draw a thin line along the upper lash line and merge it with the wing in the outer corner.
4. Clean up any fallout or eyeliner mistakes before concealing dark circles with RMS Beauty Un Cover-Up. Then, chisel out the cheekbones using Charlotte Tilbury blush in First Love on the blusher brush. Swirl the brush along the outer shade and apply upward along the cheekbone. Dab the brush back into the brighter center shade and pop that color onto the apples of the cheeks before blending the two shades together on the face.
5. Finish the eye with several coats of Benefit BadGal Bang mascara for voluminous lashes.
6. Now for the main attraction: To get the gradient lipstick effect, first trace the shape of the lips using MAC Cherry lip pencil. Then, using MAC lipstick in Brave Red, color the lips, starting from the outside edges. Rub the lips together to diffuse texture.
7. Finally, take MAC lipstick in Full Fuschia and apply only to the center of the top and bottom lip. Using your finger, pat—don’t rub—the edges of the pink color until they are blended seamlessly into your first red coat.

A Nod to the Mod

1. Cover under-eye circles and redness around the nose and mouth using NARS creamy concealer on a damp beautyblender. For a luminous, airbrushed finish, dust the complexion with Hourglass Ambient Lighting powder in Diffused Light.
2. Use Benefit Hoola Lite to contour. The cool, grey undertone creates the most natural-looking shadow as it carves out the cheekbones.
3. Create a base for the dramatic eye using Urban Decay Primer Potion, which will ensure the proceeding colors last all night without smudging.
4. To get the ’60s-inspired eye, use Charlotte Tilbury eye pencil in Barbarella Brown and a light hand to draw the shape of the arches. The bottom arch should follow the natural crease of the eye while the top arch mimics it just below the brow bone. Then, using the eye blender brush, fill in the arch shape with Charlotte Tilbury cream eyeshadow in Bette. This cream shadow dries fast, so work with just one lid at a time and blend quickly.
5. To finish the eye and add a pop of color, use the eye pencil in the shade Marlene Midnight to line the lower waterline from corner to corner. Then, coat the lashes with Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes mascara.
6. Brows should be groomed, but understated. For your most natural-looking, feathered brow, brush upward using Bobbi Brown waterproof brow shaper.
7. Keep the lips a subtle nude. Using Fresh tinted lip treatment in Honey, your pucker will be hydrated and plump without pulling focus away from your mesmerizing, retro eyes.

The Disco Eyes

1. Applying glitter can be messy, so start with the eyes. Apply NARS Pro Prime eyeshadow base as your adhesive, then pat on Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics glitter in Slate with a dampened Sigma medium sweeper brush, focusing the product on the outer third of the eye and along the upper lash line. It needn’t be perfect, just sparkling.
2. For an enhanced, glassy finish, add Kevyn Aucoin Cosmic eye gloss over the top of the glitter. Up the intensity of the eye with a small amount of Urban Decay Heavy Metal eyeliner in Glam Rock. Create a thin line across the upper lashes, nestled in the lash line for fuller-looking lashes and added definition. It’s also an easy product to carry with you to touch up glitter on the go.
3. Finish off the eyes with several coats of Eyeko Black Magic mascara.
4. Remember, your shine should be coming from your glistening eyes and not your T-zone. For a matte complexion, use your fingers to apply Jouer matte moisture tint and keep oily skin at bay.
5. Using NARS limited-edition blush in Free Soul, lightly color the apples of the cheeks, brushing upward with the Sigma blush brush for a diffused, modern look.
6. A creamy nude lipstick will balance your glittering gaze. Julep balmy lip crayon in Apricot Nude has a semigloss finish and is ultra comfortable on the lips. Apply throughout the night as needed.
7. Match your manicure to your makeup using Deborah Lippmann’s Chantilly Lace shade, building up the sheer polish until you’ve reached your desired pink hue. Then, create a half-moon shape at the cuticle bed using Smith & Cult Glass Souls nail lacquer for DIY nail art.
