Corrine Anestopoulos is really into earrings right now: “It’s all about the statement piece—something that’s lightweight but also looks like the main event,” she says. One look at BIKO’s Joyride Stud and we agree, you should never leave the house without a pair on.
The Toronto-based jewelry designer created BIKO in 2005 to introduce what she calls “modern nostalgia,” which looks like sleek, contemporary jewelry shapes with a little vintage inspiration. From pendant necklaces to artistic studs, Anestopoulos’s handcrafted pieces are exceptionally designed and versatile above all (and a favorite of stars like singer/songwriter/dancer/producer and Robert Pattinson paramour FKA twigs).
We spoke with the stylish entrepreneur about why accessories are the most important part of any outfit.

What was your inspiration for this collection?
I find that my travels are the only time that I get away from the studio and get in touch with my creativity. Over the past year, I spent time in Oaxaca City, Mexico, and in Greece (where my family is from) and even a couple road trips outside the city. Wherever I was, I found myself constantly drawn to the structural elements and architecture around me. I’m also really into this resurrection of the ’90s and the ’70s. Both decades are back in a big way and that mishmash of style is fun to work with. But in general, I’d say there’s not a literal translation for my inspiration; I definitely draw a lot of shapes from things I see in nature.
Can you give us an example?
Take the Liquid Petal Stud Earrings for example: they appear like liquid in the shape of a little fan, which I find so playful.

What materials do you use?
I use a lot of mixed metals: oxidized brass plated with 18k-gold, rhodium (also known as white gold) and oxidized silver, which is a bit nostalgic looking. I love the idea of mixing metals. It adds depth and variation from what you might expect.

What excites you most for the fall/winter 2017 collection?
Earrings are the jam right now. I’ve noticed people who are normally too shy to wear earrings going for some seriously statement-making pieces, myself included. I’m really into the Solarwave Stud Earrings in this collection. I’ve taken circular pieces and twisted them in a way that spiralizes the shape, which looks so cool. There are two sizes: a smaller, more wearable size for day-to-day and a large, much bolder statement earring. I’ve been gravitating towards the latter.

What do you love most about designing jewelry?
Jewelry gives an outfit life. You can keep your clothing the same, more or less, season after season, but new jewelry will refresh your look in a noticeable way. And shiny necklaces and statement earrings bring light to the face and make the eyes sparkle in a way that clothing cannot.
