The story of sneakers in the past few years has been that of the stampeding crossover, from athletics to streewear – and from fashion runways into your business casual and weekend looks. Right now with designers at the top of the chain focusing on this area of footwear, it’s safe to say the sneaker knows no bounds.
Four fall/winter styles worth your attention are by Gucci, Raf Simons and Rick Owens (both designing independently for adidas) and Guiseppe Zanotti.
Above, you see what happens when Gucci designer Alessandro Michele teams up with GucciGhost (some background on Mr. Ghost) for a graffiti-inspired high top. Basically the story here is GucciGhost went from spray-painting the Gucci logo on walls (an artistic act, if an illegal one) to making legitimate designer sneakers. See what we mean? The crossover is real.

This is an example of Raf Simons – longstanding fashion hero; current designer for Calvin Klein – working with adidas to make lowkey upgrades of classic sneakers. His black and orange Stan Smiths are just weird enough to be strangely magnetic, but also svelte, clean and highly approachable.

On the other hand Rick Owens’ sneakers for adidas are for the conceptually-minded. There is no question the Mastodon seen here is related to the classic adidas Pro Model. But Mr. Owens’ version is the color of spent charcoal and proportionally out-of-whack – although faithful to his own aesthetic.

For flashy Italian sneakers, Guiseppe Zanotti is the name you need to know. These particular mid-tops are like Lamborghinis for your feet, gleaming from all angles, capable of inciting gasps from strangers as you walk around and pretend there isn’t a major event happening around your ankles. Of course there is, though. Even the bottom of the sole shines bright like a diamond.
