Try the Suicoke Depa-V2 instead of sneakers this summer.
If you need more proof that sport sandals have hiked out of the backcountry and into the mainstream, look no further than Japanese cult brand Suicoke. This quirky, anonymous collective initially specialized in Russian nesting dolls (featuring characters like the Grim Reaper), but soon transitioned into footwear—with spectacular results. A partnership with legendary Italian rubber manufacturer Vibram has resulted in rugged, stylish sandals beloved of hypebeasts and fashionistas alike.
Each style is pared down to its essential elements, then elevated with the restrained artistry that’s the hallmark of great Japanese design. Versatile combinations of technical materials like neoprene, nylon webbing and Velcro ensure that these fashion-forward, tech-obsessed sandals go the distance. According to Suicoke’s Jinichi Leung, “Antibacterial function is one of the key features in [2018]. The technology is built into the footbed during the manufacturing process…for antibacterial protection that lasts the lifetime of the shoes.” This means your sick new sandals will keep funky smells and foot germs to a minimum.
Initially distributed exclusively in Japan, the label has only recently become available in the U.S. Not sure how to wear them? Sport them during the dog days of summer in place of your favorite sneakers. They’ll keep your feet cool and happy, and take your personal style up a notch at the same time. Check out our Asking for a Friend post for a more detailed look at how to rock sandals—both with and without socks.
