Protecting our environment and being good stewards of the planet is something most everyone can get behind in 2017. Simply being less wasteful and more thoughtful about the products we buy is a good start.
Fortunately, here at Nordstrom, we work with a lot of brands that take eco-friendliness to new levels of eco-extroversion. For this Earth Day, we’ve rounded up just a few of many new and old brands that embrace the environmental ethos in admirable and interesting ways.
Mar y Sol Dalia clutch | Patagonia P-6 logo trucker hat | Ellis Brooklyn Raven Terrific scented candle | RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek lip and cheek color | Stella McCartney Elyse cutout platform oxford | Melissa Joy Manning topaz hug hoop earrings
Mar y Sol handbags are made in Madagascar by local artisans who use organically tanned leathers and responsibly sourced raw materials. By promoting traditional weaving and craftsmanship, the company helps communities gain an economic foothold. Plus, the colorful bags are adorable summer accessories.
Patagonia Re-Tool snap pullover
Outdoor clothier Patagonia has long been committed to building the best products with the least amount of harm to the environment. The company gives a percentage of all its sales to environmental groups, provides garment repair and recycling programs, and carefully tracks its materials and processes to limit its footprint on the planet. True champions of the cause since environmentalism’s earliest beginnings, Patagonia makes sure its impact is net positive.
Ellis Brooklyn Fable Terrific scented candle
These nontoxic, paraben- and phthalate-free luxury candles and body milks in glorious fragrances were devised by former New York Times beauty columnist Bee Shapiro. The small-batch candles are made using only responsibly sourced natural ingredients and are packaged in lovely lead-free, recycled green-glass containers.
RMS Beauty’s beloved products are paraben-free, phthalate-free, sulfate-free, gluten-free, GMO-free and soy-free—phew! As if that weren’t enough to gain the brand the nature-loving seal of approval, the products are also not tested on animals, made in the USA and come in entirely recycled packaging. But it’s really their high-concentrate, stunning pigments that make them a makeup artist favorite.
Melissa Joy Manning keshi pearl ear chains
Dainty earrings done in recycled precious metals in a green-certified studio in the U.S. is a good start, but jewelry designer Melissa Joy Manning also incorporates upcycled stones wherever possible, sustainably and ethically sources her diamonds, and manages her carbon footprint while giving back to charities in her local community. Her darling hug hoop earrings really bring environmental consciousness full circle.
Stella McCartney strip cotton shirtdress
Stella McCartney apparel and accessories
You won’t find any leather or fur in designer Stella McCartney’s stunning collections: the staunch vegetarian and animal rights advocate’s stance is just part of her environmental activism. Since the inception of her label, McCartney has worked to improve her practices. In 2015 she began measuring and reporting her progress in regard to its “environment impact (greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, water pollution, water consumption, waste disposal and changes in ecosystem services associated with land use change)” across her company’s entire manufacturing business and supply chain.
Nordstrom is committed to respecting the environment and doing our part to reduce our impact. One focus of ours is ensuring that we offer our customers sustainable products. Read more about all our efforts at nordstromcares.com.
