Recently a lot of Americans have been looking north to Canada for a comparison. Especially this winter, it seems we might have a lot to learn from our Canadian neighbors–in terms of dressing for cold weather. Our street style photographer Kristin Yamada was just in Montreal, where she snapped the city’s residents bundled in unique coats, trendy wool accessories and cold-kicking boots.
Here are four outfits that you can cop when the temperature drops, with shoppable links to get the look.
Black on black goes beyond basic when rendered in thigh-high socks and leather shorts. While cold-weather dressing that doesn’t take the edge off your style can be tricky, sticking to a dark palette but introducing several surprise textures and cuts can be all you need to stay warm and look cool.

Faux and real fur stoles are having a renewed moment this winter. But most new styles don’t resemble granny’s footed minks; they incorporate acid hues, color-block schemes and mixed materials. If your ethics don’t favor fur, there is still a vibrant mock version to match your winter coat.

Injecting a little color into your wardrobe helps counter the winter blues. A patterned square scarf adds a swath of textural and tonal elements while serving as an approved way to wear a pseudo blanket in public. A pompom on your hat certainly serves up smiles, too.

Shearling is the material of this season. Like the fur trend, you can find a lot of faux and tinted versions of it on coats and accessories right now. A coat in a natural shade will be a timeless investment. Pair it with modern accessories like beanies and booties to keep it current.
