This just in from Google: ‘What to wear booties with’ is one of this year’s top-searched phrases. As a fashion retailer in a serious long-term relationship with shoes, this is the kind of thing that gets us excited (and feeling slightly remiss for not having said something sooner!). For anyone out there still seeking inspiration on how to wear them, we’re sharing some of our favorite ways to style booties as seen on the street-style stars of 2015—along with the expert advice of our women’s styling director Ruth Basloe.
As part of our Fashion Office, Ruth uses her encyclopedic knowledge of fashion trends and women’s style to translate to the rest of us her perspective on styling that’s as enviable as it is on point. Case in point: the following tips on putting the best looks together with—and looking your best in—booties. From tips on making your legs look longer to the most flattering ways to wear them, be bootie-baffled no more.
SKIRTS AND DRESSES
+ mini skirt/dress
A taller shaft style that covers the curves of the ankle can give legs a longer, leaner appearance.
Flat or thicker heels keep what could be more of a nighttime look from feeling too sexy for daytime.
+ below-the-knee, fuller, more structured skirt
A high-heel shootie or a style that’s fitted through your ankle creates a feminine look. With longer, more voluminous skirts, a bootie that’s too wide or flat may look too heavy and masculine with the extra skirt length.
TIP: Bare legs and a bootie color that’s close-ish to skin tone elongates leg (pictured left).
+ below-the-knee soft skirt or dress
Lighter fabrics with longer hemlines work with a range of styles—short to tall, fitted or wide, flat or high heels. That’s because more feminine shapes can take a tougher or more masculine style, and the length still exposes the slimmest part of the leg—the calf and ankle.
HOSIERY TIPS
Black tights with suede black booties can give illusion of longer legs
With boots that are less fitted at the ankle or a little short, adding a sock can help gain the right lines.
PANTS
+ cropped pants
Cropped pants continue to trend, and slim or straight styles provide the easiest option for shorter boots.
If the boots are not fitted at the ankle, be sure to show at least an inch or two of skin between.
+ cropped pants worn over the boots
With taller booties, try a bootcut, flare or wide-leg style that easily fits over the top of the boots.
With this look, the boots should be fitted at the ankle, and the pants short enough that the narrowness of the ankle is still visible. Longer pants or wider shaft boots can tend to look too heavy or masculine.
+ skinny jeans
The key is to cuff your jean—much sleeker and more current than rolling. There can be a space between, or your jean can meet the top of your boot, as long as it does not create too much bunching.
TIP: Don’t try to pull your skinny jean over the top of your bootie as this can look bulky and unflattering.
