How to Layer Hosiery and Tights, or More is More Once More

Whether you’re layering against the chill or trying to glam up your look, the right hosiery can help you master winter dressing. And any more it isn’t just about finding the right shade, it’s about playful combinations of socks, tights and leggings to create a dimensional and textured style both for the weekend and the workday.

How to Wear Hosiery Now

Nordstrom Fashion Office Women’s Accessories and Specialized Director Shannon Schafer gives us the lowdown on how to wear the latest statement-making pairs.

LAYER UP

When it comes to layering, the key is to mix textures and tones: sheer with solid, ribbed with smooth, prints with plain.

“There’s no more rules—you can put texture with texture, knee sock over sheer hosiery…anything goes,” Schafer says.

LACE LOVE

Nothing says festive like a little lace. This romantic touch—which was soulfully highlighted on the legs and everywhere in Rodarte’s nostalgia-influenced Spring 2016 show—works best with shorter silhouettes for maximum exposure.

“Pair them with a ’60s-inspired dress or ’70s shorts and simple shoe,” Schafer says.

OVER THE KNEE

The over-the-knee trend has evolved to include cozy yarns and textured knit patterns. Add a pop of color or layer them with textured tights and a leg-lengthening skirt.

SHIMMER & SHINE

The ’80s are back, and lurex and lamé mark their return in a big way. What better way to dress up a cocktail party then with a little glitz?

“Lurex is your new neutral,” Schafer explains. “It goes with everything.”

COZY CASUAL

One of our favorite looks this winter is the ballet-inspired cozy trend. Bundle up snuggly ribbed or cabled socks or legwarmers over tights for a comfy casual approach to brisk temps.
