Garance Doré on Androgynous Dressing and Picking Clothes for Paris vs. New York

Garance DoréHaving wowed the fashion world and won hundreds of thousands of fans with her fetching illustrations, innovative street-style snaps and charming writing, blog doyenne Garance Doré seemed to solidify the legitimacy of the entire blogosphere with her acceptance of the 2012 CFDA Media Award—the first ever given to a blogger.

In addition to running her much beloved site, Doré has pivoted her considerable creative might into tackling projects that run the gamut from YouTube maven to book author and—finally!—designer of a Nordstrom-exclusive capsule collection from Vince.

We chatted with her about the best way to style a turtleneck, the beauty of gender-neutral dressing and why grey skinny jeans bring out her Parisian side.

Your style embodies a perfectly combined sense of Parisian chic and New York cool. What item in your closet would you say most represents your French identity? Your New York identity?

My French identity to me are my grey skinny jeans, I don’t know why but each time I wear them, I feel very Parisian. My New York identity…is probably my giant winter parka, something I never needed anywhere else I’ve lived. It gets so cold here!

How did you your design collaboration with Vince come about?

I think fashion is really about the way we edit our wardrobe, so we thought it could be fun to show what would be my edit of the Vince “closet!”

You built this collection by picking some of your favorite Vince pieces and giving them the Garance treatment. How did you go about selecting the pieces, and what would you say is so quintessentially ‘Garance’ about the changes you made?

I think that separate pieces are just the start, and the way we put them together is our expression and our creativity. Vince makes clothes that function really well together, so styling them becomes really fun!

What’s very me is the restrained palette and the simplicity.

Garance Doré and Vince With an ongoing move toward androgyny in dressing (Saint Laurent’s Resort collection being shown on men, CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund nominees Gypsy Sport and Baja East focusing on clothing for the post-gender world), has this trend influenced your personal style and/or this collection?

I’ve always been inspired by menswear and I have always looked at what’s going on in the men’s fashion for my inspiration. I’ve always been inspired by the functionality of menswear. Mixing menswear with very feminine items is a little bit my signature, it has been for a long time actually!

Garance Doré and VinceTurtlenecks are everywhere this season (hooray for warmth and style!), and your Vince collection features a particularly fetching, softly color-blocked version. What’s your go-to tip for styling a turtleneck in a decidedly unfussy way?

I like to wear it over a pair of skinny jeans (for proportions) and with a long shirt underneath – I love layering and it makes the whole look more interesting!

In your book, you talk about being called to a creative career from an early age. You’ve found massive success through your illustration and photography—how would you compare the design process of this collaboration to your usual creative process?

It’s pretty similar! You try things and see what works. Some really don’t work, some do. Let it rest for a minute and give it a second look…And repeat the process until you’re happy with the result.

Who or what currently inspires you?

Traveling and finding interesting new ways to live, which Internet has made possible. And the clothes that go with that!

What is your go-to color palette for fall/winter?

My color palette doesn’t really evolve, it’s based on white and neutrals. Today, I’m wearing all white. Then I can add a stripe or a print, but that’s pretty rare! And I love camel. :)

The holidays are coming up, and with that comes a very busy schedule filled with meetings, parties and family gatherings. What is your favorite holiday season look?

Well, I’m crazy about coats, I’m always on the lookout for the next one. I love the season because it’s cold enough to wear a coat, but not too much that you have to be bundled up in a parka. So, a great coat, a great sweater, and sneakers to walk around and find presents for my family.
