Simone Rocha’s Kimono Florals & Moss Forests

Three things that will tell you exactly where SPACE designer Simone Rocha is in her career:

1. She presented her spring ’16 collection at the Lancaster House, one of the most stunningly exclusive mansions in London—which is, you’ll remember, a city full of stunningly exclusive mansions. This particular one, it’s worth noting, was once a part of the royal palace campus and stands within Kate-sighting distance of it.

2. Fashion is absolutely a family affair. Her wonderful mum, hair piled chicly on top of her head in and wearing a dress from her daughter’s current collection, was helping seat guests, including, well, everyone in fashion. Rocha’s father, John, is a Dublin-based designer; her mother manages his career and probably plays hostess at his shows too. It was lovely to witness it in game-day action—and in game-day audio: Rocha’s brother Max, a music producer, provided the soundtrack.

3. Finally, SPACE curator Olivia Kim’s point of view on the new collection offers the perfect summary of a designer en route to icon status. Check out our images as well as our SPACE guru’s words.

“Simone’s clothes have always combined a sweetness and feminine strength that resonate so much with me,” began Olivia.

“I love this season’s kimono-esque florals that remind me so much of my favorite place, Hawaii. The color palette was perfectly calm and serene—the pinks, browns and greens, embellished with floral crystal bits and bobs, made me think of when it just rains on a beautiful landscape.”

In her program notes, Rocha herself included a few short color and shape references (“Kyoto, Kinbaku, the moss forest, tobacco stains”) and then the line, “I saw a bride in a bamboo forest.”

To be so new and yet sweet, strong, serene, evocative and elegant within evolution—evolution that will open new doors while still inspiring and impressing those who’ve been behind her all along—well, it’s as if Rocha has rounded the corner on up-and-comer status to quietly, comfortably state, I’m here.
