Paige Adams-Geller, founder of the wildly popular brand that bears her name, sits in a light-flooded conference room that feels like a comfortable living space. Behind her, underneath a vignette of potted succulents and photography books filled with prints of Los Angeles, is a silky sundress the color of dusty figs, with cold-shoulder cutouts and drawstring ties at the waist. Lucky us, Adams-Geller and her design team created the dress exclusively for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.
When asked why she wanted to design a one-of-a-kind dress for our one-of-a-kind sale, she smiles. “For me, it’s about giving something back to the Nordstrom customer who has been so loyal and so amazing to our brand. It’s a gift for her.”
“It’s literally about saying thank you to Nordstrom, thank you to the Nordstrom customer, and giving that loyal customer something fun, new, fresh and exciting.”
Adams-Geller describes her design process as one focused on making women feel comfortable and confident. “I think one of my special gifts, which is based on my work promoting a healthy body image, is to take something from the runway to reality,” she explains. “I like looking at runways. I love looking at models, and the beauty of how they look in clothes. But the thing I’m known best for is being able to translate that into designs that real women will feel comfortable in.”
This understanding of how her clothes play out in the real world is intricately woven into her process: from creating a silhouette that evokes a certain mood to selecting fabrics that move with you throughout the day. “Silk is one of my favorites because it’s so feminine and so beautiful—and flattering and comfortable and romantic and all of that,” she says. “But silk isn’t always the best price point for a lot of people, and the wear and care of silk can be a little more difficult. So what I really wanted to find was a fabric that gives you that amazing, luxurious, comfortable, beautiful, romantic, sensual feeling…without the price point.” She laughs and adds, “And that will travel well, is easy to take care of, and still looks beautiful in that particular silhouette.”
We’d say she succeeded. Cut from whisper-soft, lightweight rayon, this bohemian-inspired dress is built for life on the go. When asked how she would style it, Adams-Geller focused on day-to-night versatility. “To go out in L.A. in the daytime, I’d wear it really casually and beautifully. Maybe to the Malibu Soho House for a fun weekend brunch. I’d style it with a cool pair of high wedges that lace up, and my cute little straw hat for the sun.”
At night, the dress would get a rocker vibe. “I definitely envision edging it up with some black. I’d rock some higher-heeled ankle boots,” she says. “I might even throw on a little bustier belt, put a choker around my neck, then grab a black suede or velvet jacket.”
Later that evening, Adams-Geller and her team shuttled from their headquarters to a party at the Grove (one of our favorite L.A. shopping hotspots), where they were hosting an alfresco pop-up shop and outdoor movie. With blankets spread across the grass as the movie credits began to roll, the event definitely felt like a party.
