How Our Nordstrom Styling Director Is Updating Her Look for 2017

Keeping up with fashion trends is a full-time job. In fact, it’s Ruth Basloe’s job. As our Nordstrom styling director, Ruth tirelessly researches designer collections and streetwear style to form reports that guide the buying and marketing strategy at Nordstrom. In addition to that, she has to field annoying questions from us like: “Can I wear black socks with white sneakers?” “What style of jacket should I buy this spring?” “Does this look weird?” But she’s always game to offer her good-natured guidance.
For our own reference, we selfishly asked Ruth how she’s updating her wardrobe for 2017. Now we’re generously sharing her pointers and shopping wish list with you!
Paris street style spring 2017
  1. Updated shirting.
“I love all the new plays on the classic woven shirt: off-the-shoulder, one-shoulder, statement sleeves, extra long or oversized,” says Ruth. “I’m hoping to find something that is really unique and interesting in a bold striped pattern.”

  2. Refined utility.
“We’ve started to see pants, skirts and jackets with more sophisticated cuts, fabrics and details than your basic cargo pant or jacket. Since they have a certain amount of polish and crispness, I will wear them to work with a soft top or dress,” Ruth tells us.

  3. Not-so-mellow yellow.
“This optimistic color turned up over and over again on the spring runways,” says Ruth. “To add sophistication, I’d pair a yellow top or bottom with a color that might traditionally be considered clashing, like olive, a warm khaki or a rich russet shade.”

  4. Dreamy, romantic.
Ruth told us: “Lace, delicate ruffles—sweet details are having a moment. I’m on the hunt for a pretty blouse to wear with distressed denim or ruffle or lace skirt to wear with a classic grey hoodie and sneakers.”

  5. Redone denim.
“New twists on jean construction continue to trend so my hunt for the most interesting new versions continues,” Ruth tells us.

  6. Slides and slippers.
“Anything that slips on adds a certain sense of ease to your look,” Ruth advises. “They look great with all the cropped pants we’re seeing, and since there are no straps they elongate the look of your leg when worn with skirts and shorts.”

  7. Bold gold jewelry.
“I like how we are seeing shapes that are organic, yet still streamlined and modern,” Ruth says. “I have never been one for jewelry that is delicate or fussy, so a clean, bold look is perfect for me.”
