Welcome to Fashion Bytes, a cheat sheet for your favorite runway designers. From style inspirations to behind-the-scenes scoops, here’s everything worth knowing at New York Fashion Week Spring 2018.
The brand: Oscar de la Renta
The history: With a legacy of great American couture, Oscar de la Renta is the luxury hallmark of First Ladies, movie star, and socialites. Founded in 1965, Mr. de la Renta counted Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis as an early supporter; his brand was one of the first American labels to have its own fragrance. Worn on the Oscar red carpet and memorably in a McDonald’s on Sex and the City, Oscar de la Renta continues to be an American fashion standard for elegance and impeccable taste. (It’s also one of the only fashion brands that’s ever lured Taylor Swift to their front row.)
The designers: Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim bring fresh eyes to the storied label, and their technical expertise, combined with their sense of sartorial adventure, makes for some amazing reveals.
The show: Held at Sotheby’s famous auction house on the Upper East Side, the collection reflected the gallery setting with paint-splattered dresses and shirts. The Oscar de la Renta logo was remixed and stitched onto chiffon ballgowns and even a fur coat, while paragraphs about love and art were stamped across blazers and pants. And there were 23 (!) evening gowns, ranging from black and sylphlike to hot pink and frothy, each a work of art in itself.
The f-row: Nicki Minaj arrived in a massive black-and-white fur coat, complete with hood, while Bella Hadid garnered just as many flashbulbs on the runway as the rap queen did in her seat.
The verdict: With dresses like these, we’ll never complain about going to a black tie wedding again.
