Welcome to Fashion Bytes, a cheat sheet for your favorite runway designers. From style inspirations to behind-the-scenes scoops, here’s everything worth knowing at New York Fashion Week Spring 2018.

The brand: Monse

The history: An emerging star on the style scene, Monse began in 2015 with a rush of flashbulbs: Sarah Jessica Parker and Sienna Miller wore their tailored, graphic clothes before they’d even shown a collection. Eight seasons in, they’ve amassed more Hollywood wattage from Amal Clooney, Selena Gomez and Lupita Nyong’o. From spotted silk blouses to origami-folded pencil skirts, this line is for women who dress to be noticed, and certainly admired.

The designers: Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia met working together at Oscar de la Renta. When Peter Copping was (briefly) appointed creative director, they left to start Monse together. But surprise! Soon after launching their own line, Oscar de la Renta offered them joint creative director roles… and they said yes. Now the pair do double duty with ODLR and Monse showing mere days apart at fashion week. (Coffee, anyone?)

The show: With the runway coated to look like a basketball court, models stomped the lanes in wool tear-away track pants, star-spangled dresses, and (like Calvin Klein last night) some leather-fringe hems that evoked American cheerleader dreams. There were leather leggings laced like boxing gloves and jagged sequin hems that referenced fireworks. The sexy, strong looks packed a punch in more ways than one.

The f-row: Nicki Minaj wore a black leather lace-up skirt lifted straight off the runway, and the entire internet stopped for a few precious milliseconds.

The verdict: As celebrity stylist Tara Swennen said, “just one big ol’ slay.” Which means we’re likely to see these black slashed jeans and bare-shouldered varsity bombers on clients like Kristen Stewart and Ashley Benson.
