Welcome to Fashion Bytes, a cheat sheet for your favorite runway designers. From style inspirations to behind-the-scenes scoops, here’s everything worth knowing at Milan Fashion Week Spring 2018.

The brand: Gucci

The history: The luxury label was founded by the unbelievably alliterative Guccio Gucci in 1921. Gucci had been a porter at the Savoy Hotel in London–that was the extent of firsthand experience before beginning his luxury luggage company in his birthplace, Florence. In 1953, the designer’s sons (Aldo, Rodolfo, Ugo and Vasco) established a new logo for the brand in tribute to their father and founder, and the double G was born.

The designer: With his cascading chestnut hair and flamboyant jackets, Alessandro Michele has cut a figure for himself and Gucci since his appointment in 2015. In two years, Michele’s luxurious eclecticism and maximalism has become Gucci’s calling card, and set the tone for 21st century dressing. A favorite of singers and rappers, Michele has collaborated on costumes for Bjork and Florence Welch.

The show: We’ve come to expect spectacle from Michele. As if aliens interpreted human civilization through illustrated children’s’ history and cartoon books, the runway was an ersatz Tiber river strewn with monuments of Aztec, Incan, Egyptian and Roman antiquity. Michele’s credo this season was “the act of creation as an act of resistance.” But forgive us for asking resistance to what when you’re the reigning Roman emperor of fashion?

The f-row: As diverse as Michele’s influences: A$AP Rocky, Soko, Dakota Johnson and James Righton rubbed well-dressed shoulders.

The verdict: From the Elton John album handbags to Looney Tunes sweaters to exquisitely beaded ice-skating costumes, consumers of luxury culture will find something that uniquely speaks to them in a collection that signifies everything.
