SPACE Brand PASKAL’s Neon Ruffles and Laser Cutouts at Paris Fashion Week

There are several things we’ve come to count on from Kiev-based Julie Paskal: laser-cut details, a strong sense of color and a bridge between old-world tradition and the modern nightclub setting, to name a few. There’s also almost always a sense of story.

When we launched SPACE just over a year ago, she was exploring neo-archetypes of the traveling circus. Last season, when we met her here in Paris to see what is currently on offer for fall 2016, she told us all about the women who work in Ukrainian flower stands and how, for her, that yielded a collection completely free from florals.

But this season, instead of presenting a character-driven narrative, she bounced off of the art world. Don’t worry, though; there were lots of lovely cutout accents and right-now ruffles.

German painter Sigmar Polke‘s Ohne Titel (Streifenbild) roughly translates to “untitled,” with the third word indicating that it’s a striped work. It was in those minimal, neon-colored contrasting lines that Julie found the basis of her spring collection.

At her Tuesday morning presentation, a soundtrack connected to the trance style that originated in the ’80s in Goa, India, bubbled into an intimate white room as asymmetrical dresses and cut mesh skirts took the floor.

When you’re looking at a PASKAL collection, you’re never too far from the fact that Julie was trained in architecture and engineering—but I’m also reminded of her love for dancing and counterculture. I’ll never forget my first meeting with her, when she told me the place she’d most like to go in the entire world is Burning Man.

She herself wears her collection with trainers, especially now that she’s pregnant. They’re absolutely clothes for the everyday, but you can also see them as minimal, magical costumes for whatever adventure you’d most like to get to.
