A short list of things that inspired Shrimps designer Hannah Weiland this season:

–The opulence of the 18th Century Royal French Court
–The English painter Edward Wadsworth
–French painter Paul Gauguin’s images of beaded, pearl-wearing Tahitian women
Oh, and Chuck Taylor Converse All Star high-tops. While everyone on tony Bond Street in London on Friday was captivated by the shearling-like faux fur—a play on that pearl color—and the new wide, old-world silhouettes—a play on the aforementioned fine art and culture—all eyes went down to those lacy, textural sneakers.
Spring has Hannah evolving the ready-to-wear that added context to her coats and furry accessories. Amid these gingham frocks and wrap shapes are those cheeky doodles Hannah is happily addicted to; the mix goes beyond retro-meet-modern. It’s straight-up cartoon classicism.
And in fact, there’s another collaboration and mash-up at play here. Hannah collaborated with fellow SPACE designer Sophie Bille Brahe to craft delicate and sly pearl-driven pieces. As known as Shrimps is for ultra-fun color patterns and that larger-than-life perspective, these gentle moments—and the soft, off-white theme—feel like a smart unfolding.
Which is not to say that the brand you’ve grown to love is going to change.
“I really wanted to do an all-cream collection, but I couldn’t stay away from color,” the designer told me with a smile.
