Five Top Oscar Looks from Our Hollywood Reporters

Topanga, CA: W magazine calls it hippie chic, CNN calls it Malibu’s hippie cousin, but we refer to the Nordstrom just north and west of Santa Monica as Hollywood’s best dressed secret—especially considering personal stylist Carly Nagel. From her post in the canyon, Carly gets to know the cast and crew who really make the movie magic happen. From set designers and makeup artists to supporting characters, producers, and partners and BFFs of big names, her clients are real girls in a really extravagent world, so when we want to daydream about Oscar outfits and red carpet looks, we go straight to her.

“It’s our favorite time of year, the Super Bowl of fashion!” Carly told us. She’s careful to admit that she doesn’t dress the stars—we all know they have their own stylists who do that—but, she says, “The common denominator of all involved is that everyone wants to feel glamorous and comfortable at the same time.”

We had Carly and her Topanga store cohorts select their five favorite looks from the floor—fitted out with killer heels and hot handbags. The dresses themselves, like the show-stopping red Monique Lhuillier pictured here, aren’t available online, so if you’re actually clutching an invite (lucky you!) or otherwise searching for a perfect party look, please call Carly and company at 818-884-7900, or visit our Designer Eveningwear offerings to see what’s available online.

Otherwise, feel free to join in this spectator sport with us.

“This is the dress that makes the red carpet jealous!” says Carly of this super-charged “plunging neckline and fabulous tulle princess skirt.”

Complete the look with the Alexander McQueen Royal Skull clutchisn’t that precisely what nominee Jennifer Lawrence would do?

“Capes were definitely a thing among Hollywood elite at the last Golden Globes, and I love this Reem Acra,” says Carly. Knock it out of the park with glossy Prada pumps and a McQueen box clutch.

Now. Pop quiz: what color won at the Golden Globes? Hint: J Lo. Yeah, bright sunny yellow has never looked better, especially once you lay your eyes on this number by Carolina Herrera. “The contrasting black details would make anyone feel like they already won,” says Carly, who paired the look with chic ankle-strap heels from Saint Laurent and the Christian Louboutin Vero Dodat clutch.

If our quiz question got you geared up to cheer for white, well, you probably watch a lot of red carpet coverage—and fashion shows. The world has a lot of gorgeous white in it right now, like this Elie Saab stunner. Carly says, “It’s a breath of fresh air in this shorter length with its full-on flirty skirt.” And those strappy Jimmy Choos.

But how about a wild card? How about a jumpsuit? Carly points out that they’re a snap to accessorize—simple and classic are definitely the way—and moreover, the sparkly, one-shoulder Elie Saab piece offers a chic, minimal way to stand out amid the “gown go-round”. Rooney Mara, we’re looking at you.
