Each season we look forward to new creations from Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, who deftly balances elegance and playfulness in his menswear. We asked the legendary Italian design house what inspired their fall and winter 2017 pieces. Here’s what they said.

From Valentino: This crewneck sweater, made in wool, gauge 5, has Fair Isle details on the shoulders. The sport theme is transversal this season with a sportive stripe signature. The inspiration comes from the ’70s. Specifically, the punk atmosphere of London during the ’70s has been reflected in our FW 17 collection through the use of English fabrics, characterized by the tartan and macro check patterns, together with details such as micro zips and eyelets.
