Matthew Christopher pretty much embodies the American Dream. After growing up in rural Iowa on a pig farm, Matthew swapped swine for sewing and moved to the Windy City to pursue his passion for design at school, subsequently making a splash on the NYC bridal scene. Now, with over a decade of owning and designing his eponymous couture label under his belt, Matthew Christopher has designed countless collections of gorgeous wedding gowns for brides around the globe—and he’s still going strong. We caught up with Christopher to get a peek inside his world.

What is the one question you always get asked by brides-to-be, and what do you tell them?
Brides often ask if I can make minor modifications to gowns like making the train longer, the sweetheart neckline lower, or adding sleeves,  more beading….etc, etc. I am happy to make all wedding-gown dreams come true; small modifications are always welcome. Brides willingly take my advice when we discuss what would look best.

What do you love most about your recent bridal collection?
It represents enduring love and the enduring classic look of Matthew Christopher with a modern twist. I love the unique necklines, detachable trains, beautiful floral-embroidered lace and hues that represent blushful love.

What are some of your favorite things happening in the world of weddings right now?
I am thrilled with same-sex weddings and dressing both brides! I am also a huge fan of cascading bouquets and love seeing the resurgence of this style. Brides are asking for silk duchess again, and that is very exciting. Can’t wait to get started on the next collection.

For a newly engaged woman just beginning her journey to find the perfect wedding dress, what advice would you offer on how to start?
Be open-minded when you try on gowns and listen to your consultant/stylist. What you are looking for is sometimes the opposite of what you look stunning in. There is no need to try on more than 8-10 gowns, and don’t be surprised if the first gown you try on is the one!

You’ve been in the bridal business for well over a decade with your current label, plus more before that. What has changed between then and now?
So much has changed: necklines, silhouettes, lace, beading, embroidery and even the fabrication on gowns. The time it takes to make a dress with these incredible details is longer, but it has also increased the excitement for the big day.

What are five favorite things about your city you wouldn’t necessarily find in a guidebook that you’d share with a visitor who’s never been, to show them ‘your’ New York?
1. I love sharing the view of the Empire State Building, Freedom Tower and the Statue of Liberty from my apartment.
2. The diversity of the cuisine all over New York, and discovering new fun restaurants.
3. Walking the High Line and enjoying the old—and new—New York.
4. There’s nothing like a Broadway show!
5. Go to Karaoke One 7 and pretend you are in a Broadway show!
