I Love the ’90s | Fashion Week Beauty Trends

To the tune of George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90,” Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Helena Christensen closed the Versace show in Milan, statuesque in sparkling gold dresses. The return of the 1990s supermodels spread like wildfire through Instagram.

On the 20th anniversary of her brother’s death, Donatella, standing arm in arm with her muses, paid tribute to the groundbreaking work of the late Gianni Versace. Featuring prints and designs he created, the show was alive with the spirit of Gianni’s most influential decade and reaffirmed the trend we’ve seen throughout the season: the ’90s are back in a major way.

Moschino

Tom Pecheux’s androgynous makeup at Moschino had a nostalgic effect. The brown lip and bold brows look as though they were pulled right out of the supermodel playbook—not to mention the bobs, which are giving us a strong Linda Evangelista vibe. Pecheux used an eyeliner, M·A·C’s Groundbreaker, to create that signature ’90s lip. To make the eyes pop, the makeup artist applied false lashes and filled in eyebrows with M·A·C’s brow set—two shades darker than each model’s natural color—for highly groomed drama.

Topshop Unique

The smudgy glitter eyeshadow at Topshop Unique expanded on the ’90s rave theme from the label’s previous season. The gritty metallic eye—created by makeup artist Lynsey Alexander—is meant to look like it has been slept in, which is to say that it is messy in the best way possible.

Versace

Makeup artist extraordinaire Pat McGrath used the Versace runway to debut her Mothership II: Sublime eyeshadow palette, creating a gilded smoky eye using shades Bronze 005 (gold glitter), Iconic (satin espresso), Dark (matte oxblood) and VR Nectar (shimmering peachy-copper). On the lips? McGrath painted the pouts of models with her collection’s perfect ’90s nude shade, aptly named “Donatella.”

Salvatore Ferragamo

Makeup artist Mark Carrasquillo envisioned a feathered brow à la Brooke Shields for the Salvatore Ferragamo runway. He kept the rest of the look very minimal with muted eyeshadow—a blend of M·A·C’s Cork and Espresso—to add depth without excess color. To create the full ’90s brow, Carrasquillo used M·A·C’s Veluxe Brow Liner in one shade darker than the individual model’s own hair color for added intensity.

Molly Goddard

For an updated ’90s perm, UK Creative Director of John Frieda, Luke Hersheson, created cascading spirals for the Molly Goddard runway. To get his big, bouncy results, Hersheson curled the models’ lengths tightly at the root before pulling the hair back with a stretchy, black headband (also very ’90s). To finish the look, he sprayed John Frieda’s Shine Glossing Mist for luminous, healthy-looking ringlets.

Julien Macdonald

What beach waves? At the Julien Macdonald show, hair stylist Adam Reed ushered in the return of the sleek blowouts from the ’90s catwalk. He used GHD’s hair dryer before using the Platinum styler to create Claudia Schiffer-esque lengths. Re-creating this look? Don’t forsake volume or texture for poker-straight strands. Hair should always have movement.
