Even the fashion faithful get chilly. It’s true, no amount of style sense can insulate you from dropping temps. Dressing with flair for the weather is a skill that takes more know-how than how to knot a scarf. Fortunately, we’ve been carefully observing how our favorite fashion folks bundle up and picked up a few tricks to prepare for coming cold fronts.
The big takeaway: layer on these key pieces, and be prepared to shrug off your jacket when the street-style paparazzi descend.
Puffer Jacket
Who knew style stars could be so practical? In recent seasons, puffer jackets have been elevated to the status of fashion silhouette. The cocoon-like coats provide warmth and resiliency from the elements. We saw them worn with outfits of all varieties–skirts, jeans, leather pants and dresses–but by far the dominate color was cherry red.

Pink Jacket
Nothing cheers up grey skies like bubblegum colored clothes. Throughout the fashion cities, we saw Memphis Milano pink popping on all types of attire. On coats, however, the shade packed a particular Snapple-colored punch. A Day-Glo pink shell may may just become our go-to winter wear–after all, the world doesn’t need another black overcoat.

Turtlenecks
Steve Jobs’s sphere of influence has spilled over into fashion, for sure, but so has the tech giant’s signature shirt. Slip a black turtleneck under just about anything this fall for an added layer of warmth and an additional styling piece. We saw them under feminine dresses, alone or even under other shirts. If you’re looking for a fall upgrade, just download one below.

Graphic Scarves
The classic cold weather late addition has become a major outfit consideration. This season, choose a statement scarf to give your winter coat a fresh update. Citrus hues, floral prints and geometric patterns all add on-trend flair while helping you face the elements.

Fashion Hoodies
This one just makes great (fashion) sense. Hoodies have taken on a style life of their own; in recent seasons, luxury houses have developed their own versions of this cozy and cool streetwear staple. Even the fanciest fashion ladies wear the premium versions from labels like Vetements and Givenchy. We’ve been seeing them layered under coats, with the hood at the ready should the rain–or snow–be in the forecast.
