Modern Icon Hari Nef Teaches Her Mom (and Us) How to Take a Selfie

Want to take the perfect selfie? Model, actress and writer Hari Nef has a few tricks up the sleeve of her Vetements dress. Want to be the best mom to your extraordinarily talented kid? Robin Neff Clebnik might know a thing or two about that.

While we had this mother-daughter dream team on set for our Mother’s Day video shoot, we asked them to show us how to work all our angles—and to share the Mother’s Day love.

The Thread: Hari, are there any industry secrets you can share about taking selfies?

Hari: All right, this is a big industry secret and I can’t believe that I’m saying this, but suck in your cheeks a little bit. Like bite your cheeks. And then just think about being really angry or really horny.

Robin: I can’t bite both cheeks at the same time. Do you mean my sultry look?

Hari: Mom, how do you look at Dad when he gives up an afternoon of golf to…

Robin: Am I supposed to look grateful?

Okay, moving on. Robin, what’s surprised you most about being a mother?

Robin: You always have to be ready for something new. As soon as you adapt to whatever phase of life your child is in, it changes. And you have to be ready to change with it. I didn’t imagine that’s how it was going to be and that’s probably the most rewarding part.

Hari: You handle the unexpected parts of parenting very well. Even now I feel so comfortable calling or texting you. Sometimes I’ll realize, Oh, my God, I’m calling her at 11:45 at night. But that’s just what I’m used to with you. You’re ready to go. You’ve always been ready to go.

Robin, you’ve said you think Hari would be a good mother. Can you talk more about why?

Robin: She is so loving and compassionate. She has a lot to give, just a tremendous amount of wisdom.

Hari: I would be a great mom. I would attack motherhood like an AP class. I would read every book. I would buy every Baby Bjorn and Diaper Genie.

There are a lot of girls who are just a little bit younger than me who kind of—I don’t want to say I’m like mother to them, but there are aspects of that relationship. I get very protective. I try to make sure everybody’s getting what they deserve and everybody’s got their healthcare and they’re able to use the right bathroom.

Robin: See? It’s the mothering instinct. I told you.

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about the two of you?

Hari: We have matching tattoos. Mine is behind my ear here.

Robin: And mine is behind my neck.

Hari: It’s 412 in Roman numerals, which is the number of the house we used to live in together.

Any last thoughts about Mother’s Day?

Robin: Yes. Hari, now that you’re 24, I think it’s time for you to buy me a Mother’s Day present instead of just a card. I wanted to say that today.

Hari: I think every day is Mother’s Day in our household.

Robin: Well, why don’t we celebrate Mother’s Day together? With cake.

Hari: She loves cake.
