Ever notice that people are super heart-happy these days? It’s almost too easy to furiously tap that little heart emoji on photo after photo as you scroll through your Instagram feed or casually send it through a text or comment. And when you see a streaming video of puppies napping? LOVE plus heart-eyes. Except that these digital displays of affection lose something along the way. We want to bring the analog version back in 2017, where an emoji transforms into emotion, a hug is real and when you laugh out loud, you do it with someone sitting across from you.
In honor of LGBTQ Pride Month, Nordstrom is partnering with the Human Rights Campaign Foundation to create the Love & Peace 2 You T-shirt to support friends and colleagues participating in Pride parades around the country (proceeds will be donated to the HRCF). And to kick off the celebrations, we wanted to get back to the basics and talk to some of our favorite people in fashion, beauty and entertainment on what love and peace mean to them.
How are fashion and beauty vital to self-expression in 2017? Getting dressed is an inescapable part of our lives. What you choose to put on tells a story about you. Whether you want it to or not, it still says something. [Caring about] how you choose to look doesn’t make you superficial; you have the freedom and power to tell a story.
To me, love is truly about: being present and truly happy with yourself. When you accept yourself and love yourself, you will find it in everyone and everything around you.
To me, peace is about: knowing how to calm your mind, relax and take time for yourself. When I’m at peace with myself, it also calms down the people around me.
My LGBTQ icon is: RuPaul Charles; I’ve followed his entire career since I was a child. At first, I found him to be entertaining, but now I understand he’s always been there to teach me and all the children of the world to simply be yourself. I’ve learned from him that through being yourself, you can make that a career and use it to help others to be themselves—their best selves. It doesn’t matter what you are or who you think you are or what you dream to be; YOU can make anything possible just by being you, and that is truly powerful.
How are fashion and beauty vital to self-expression in 2017? Gender and identity are performative, and fashion and makeup are our armor that we dress ourselves in every morning to inform the world of how we want to be seen, whether it’s Spanx, that $60 contour kit, the push-up bra that accentuates your femininity or the minimizing bra that obscures it. To be in control of our exterior provides a degree of control and protection that is often robbed from us by those who seek to harm us.
To me, love is truly about: being honest enough about your own flaws to allow yourself to be openhearted enough to accept them in others. To be kind in spite of a very human instinct to lash out, to just try to do your best and to apologize when you fall short.
To me, peace is: not sure I’ve ever truly experienced this concept, but the closest I’ve gotten is probably wine, bread, butter and Maldon Salt.
My LGBTQ icon is: anybody who still survives in the shadows. Though you may be misunderstood and sometimes scorned by those close to you, know that there are millions of us who see you, support you and desperately want you in this world.
How are fashion and beauty vital to self-expression in 2017? They’re the utmost way to express yourself in 2017! I love that people are using makeup to break preconceived notions and stereotypes, from inspiring Muslim beauty bloggers to all the boys out there who do their makeup way better than me (hi, James Charles!).
To me, love is truly about: embracing your neighbor without judgment.
To me, peace is about: respecting what you don’t know or understand.
My LGBTQ icon is: Hari Nef—she’s a badass when it comes to beauty and fashion, and she does her own thing without caring what other people think.
How are fashion and beauty vital to self-expression in 2017? The way we express ourselves through what we wear or how we do our makeup or style our hair is much deeper, and the psychology behind it is so interesting to me. Think about how you felt when you had on an outfit that made you feel really, truly confident—like you could take over the world. Harnessing these feelings and thinking about ways we can grow, communicate and just feel great through fashion and beauty is powerful. In the age of instantaneous sharing and social media (aka 2017), it’s now easier to connect with people who share the same interests and offer a voice of authenticity to the space.
To me, love is truly about: leading with your heart and not being afraid to fall and feel—letting your ego subside.
To me, peace is about: creating a dynamic of respect and awareness with others and yourself, and practicing those principles whenever you can.
My LGBTQ icon is: Freddie Mercury.
How are fashion and beauty vital to self-expression in 2017? I say (and always have said) wear whatever you want and whatever makes you feel powerful and fabulous. Your outfit is one of the first things people will judge you on before you open your mouth, so if you feel bold and self-assured in your look, you’re going to project that confidence.
To me, love is truly about: Loving yourself first and then opening your heart to others.
To me, peace is about: Understanding yourself and how to stay secure at times of despair, and then understanding that those around you may be different.
My LGBTQ icon is: There are so many individuals who inspire me on a daily basis, but RuPaul Charles has always been at the top of the list. He’s a true trailblazer and an icon who is beautiful inside and out, and promotes that for others—to live your most authentic self and be whoever you want to be.
How are fashion and beauty vital to self-expression in 2017? Fashion and beauty have always been a form of self-expression; it’s a way to communicate who you are in the world without ever having to speak a word. It’s someone’s first impression of you. You’re born into this world with your name, your gender, your family, your hair color and your eye color. The way you choose to dress and the friends you choose are the few things you get to decide for yourself—it’s full creative self-expression.
To me, love is truly about: being selfless. If you’ve ever had a dog, you know this kind of selfless love—they give everything without expecting anything back. They are our biggest teachers!
To me, peace is: empathy and compassion; being able to see and love someone for who they are despite their differences in looks, beliefs or views.
My LGBTQ icon is: Ellen DeGeneres … always.
