Kate’s Take: New York Fashion Week Top Beauty Trends

From “Rock & Roll Spanish Women” and “Smoky Chelsea Girls,” to Utilitarian Punk” and “Twiggy’s Daughter” – these were just a few of the inspirations heard backstage as we endured the freezing temps in NYC for Fall 2015 Fashion Week. Equipped with weatherproof boots (thank you Aquatalia and Valentino !) and Mom’s super-warm, hand-knit legwarmers (thank you MOM!), we braved wind, snow and sauna-like backstage tents to see fall beauty in all its splendor.

The Eyes Have It

Fall has always been the season for the Smoky Eye. 2015 is no exception, but new, modern approaches make it exciting, sophisticated and definitely dramatic. Regardless of the techniques and colors used, we saw many cool variations including:

nyfw-aw15-backstage-beauty-n-miller Classic: From gorgeous grays and deep browns, to modern cinnamon and plum tones, smoky never looked so good (Christian Siriano, Alexander Wang, Derek Lam).

Smoldering: Layering deep jewel tones like purple or metallic chocolate created amazing petrol-like lids with almost shimmering finishes (Nicole Miller, Altuzarra, Monique Lhuillier).

Artistic & graphic: Cue the black eyeliner revolution to go beyond the traditional cat eye (Cushnie, Badgley Mischka, Yigal Azrouel).

Just for fun: Crystal and beaded accents will be perfect for a holiday party (Tadashi, Ohne Titel.)

The Bold Lip

Red alert! The Fall lip is seriously making a statement and in a variety of deep tones. Whether matte, cream or glossy, lips were saturated and refined (translation: applied with purpose–well-defined but not always with actual liner). A few standouts included:

Oxblood, inspired by ’90s red leather Doc Martens boots, at 3.1 Phillip Lim.

Ruby, for vampy elegance, at Carolina Herrera.

Saturated crimson to offset “slept-in” eye makeup at Monique Lhuillier.

Dark and sensual matte tones of burgundy and brick at Marchesa and Naeem Khan.

Ones To Watch:

Layered nail polish: We LOVE this one because anyone can do it, and it literally doubles your polish wardrobe! Our favorites were nude over white, and red over black (aka “Red Velvet Cupcake” at Kate Spade by Deborah Lippmann). Think of it as bespoke nail art! Shop: nail polish

nyfw-aw15-backstage-beauty-c-m-valvo-lashes-1

“Kewpie doll” lashes – spiky and clumpy, yet still somehow wearable, as seen at Nanette Lepore and literally painted on at Carmen Marc Valvo. Consider it the modernized Twiggy effect. Shop: mascara

Bringing out the Brows – natural brows are definitely IN, as we saw at ICB, Alexander Wang, and Christian Siriano. With so many great brow products available, there’s no need to over-groom or over-think these face framers. Shop: brow products

nyfw-beauty-trends-aw15-kates-take-Undone-hair

“Undone hair” – think ropey, slept-in and intentionally imperfect. It’s all about a raw texture (sleep in braids for the perfect next-day waviness seen at Novis and Altuzarra). But as one stylist reminded us, “keep it clean…not dirty or grungy.” Shop: hair care
