Tonight one of fashion’s biggest events takes place: the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala—or as many simply refer to it, the Met Gala.
The highly anticipated annual event raises funds for the recently renovated Anna Wintour Costume Institute, while also kicking off a new exhibition—this year highlighting the designs of Charles James, an Anglo-American couturier who created complex and intricately constructed pieces influenced by surrealism and mathematics.
The Gala also draws an array of fashion-loving attendees, including the ever-stylish Sarah Jessica Parker, who adds the title of event co-chair to an ever-growing list of accomplishments (including Guest Editor for The Thread!).
We were able to grab a moment with Sarah Jessica to get her thoughts on this year’s event, plus she shared some snaps of four special-edition versions of the classically chic ‘Fawn’ Pump, each decked out in high-sheen satin with the signature grosgrain strip updated in black*—perfect for a formal affair.
“This year, the Met is celebrating the career of Charles James, and I’m thrilled. I have the great privilege of standing on the receiving line with Chair Aerin Lauder and my co-chairs, Miss Wintour, Mr. Oscar de la Renta, Bradley Cooper, and Lizzie and Jon Tisch. One of the real treats for me is meeting lots of people I would never have the opportunity to meet and also seeing what glorious, amazing dresses they’re wearing. And this year, for the first time ever, the men are arriving in white tie!
“It’s a hugely fun, glamorous, amazing night. Most importantly, it raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and specifically for the Costume Institute, which has the important job of archiving some of the great designer pieces from the past 100 years and taking care of them for people, for tourists and visitors, to come and see these amazing things.”
*Although these versions of the ‘Fawn’ Pump are not available for purchase, you can find similar styles in the Nordstrom-exclusive SJP Collection, online and in selected stores. Be sure to follow the SJP Collection on Instagram to see which pair Sarah Jessica wears to the event!
