Today, on International Women’s Day, we celebrate the strength of female entrepreneurs everywhere—women who lead with unwavering passion and a uniquely female approach to ambition. But specifically, we want to celebrate these eight businesswomen for the ways in which they make us feel amazing, from their organic facial oils and innovative hair devices to the advice and inspiration they impart, giving us the confidence and courage to chase our own dreams.
Because the only thing more beautiful than a woman in control of her own destiny is one who supports other women on their journeys to success, we want to introduce you to a collection of dynamic women from our Nordstrom beauty family who know what being a Girl Boss means to them and to the next generation of female leaders.
Tata Harper | Founder of Tata Harper Skincare
“Being a Girl Boss means being real, being honest and taking care of your employees. Everyone who is part of our Tata Harper Skincare family is like my extended family. We spend so much time together that it is important that we all work well and productively together and, of course, at the end of the day, have fun doing it.”
Sarah Potempa | Celebrity Hairstylist, Creator of The Beachwaver Co.
“Taking a vision and turning it into a reality is one of the greatest feelings of success. Growing a company that focuses on empowerment, creativity and spreading love and beauty into the world is what being a Girl Boss is all about. From stories of women that were born with limitations, to hairdressers that developed wrist problems, to everyday women balancing life—it’s incredible to hear how they are finally able to curl their hair and how the Beachwaver has given them more confidence. The journey of being a Girl Boss is in the day-to-day stories, moments and experiences.”
Chase Polan | Founder of KYPRIS Beauty
“I am a woman, a founder and a CEO with all of the responsibilities of stewardship that the titles imply: ensuring my team is cared for, focused and in their right work; learning from, teaching and maintaining quality relationships with our extended professional community; serving, educating and delighting our patrons; and last but certainly not least, embodying the example of integrity and thoughtfulness that our team collectively upholds.”
“The means are the ends: If you want beauty, begin with beauty. If you want kindness, be kind. If you want to live a creative life, create.”
— Chase Polan
Dr. Barbara Sturm | Founder of Dr. Barbara Sturm
“Never lose your curiosity, your tenacity or your fearlessness. Take risks. Stay humble and keep both feet on the ground. I love the term Girl Boss because it sounds badass. Other than that, though, the word boss doesn’t apply to me and my team. We all operate on an equal level characterized by friendship, trust and professionalism.”
Dr. Raj | Founder of TULA Probiotic Skincare
“Don’t try to be perfect. Knowing where your weaknesses are does not make you weak. Once you identify them, find extremely smart people to teach and help you fill in your gaps—personally and professionally.”
— Dr. Raj
Tracey Woodward | CEO of Aromatherapy Associates + Portrait
“Having had many senior roles over the years, I am and have been empowered and supported by so many great women. Aromatherapy Associates was set up in 1985 by two of these women, Geraldine Howard and Sue Beechey. It’s always been a brand that has been driven to support women in the art of living well and being kind to themselves while staying true to our roots. Those attributes are what it means to be a Girl Boss. I’m honored to be able to talk about self-care, kindness, emotional balance, mindfulness, trust and empathy—all life skills we need to have if we’re going to create a more balanced and happy every day in the workplace or home.”
Fiona Stewart | Founder of slip for beauty sleep
“Being a Girl Boss means empowering and supporting women. Be resilient, work harder than you think you need to and be kind to everyone.”
— Fiona Stewart
“Well, even to be called a Girl Boss is pretty cool. I suppose it means that I, along with the help of my truly remarkable team, am helping pave the way and show women and girls everywhere that they really can do whatever they set their minds to, and that there is no one way to achieve success and happiness.”
