Brandon Maxwell Knows Women and What They Want to Wear

Brandon Maxwell Spring 2018 campaign with Jourdan Dunn

Brandon Maxwell Knows Women and What They Want to Wear post image

“I love seeing what women post on their Instagram, how they style it, and how they always seem like they have somewhere to go,” Brandon Maxwell says. “That truly, truly gives me joy.” According to the Brandon Maxwell brand story—basically the designer’s biography—as a boy, Maxwell spent a lot of time at a women’s boutique in Texas where his grandmother worked. There, he got his first taste of styling, which became his career before he launched his eponymous label in 2015.

Being around women—his grandma, his mom, his high school friends before he was styling supermodels and Lady Gaga—has given the fashion designer an uncanny connection with his female clientele and colleagues. “I feel so blessed to work with a team of incredible women who, over that time, grow, evolve and adapt together,” Maxwell says about the group effort behind his successful clothing line. “Seeing our community come together has been an extremely enriching experience that I could have never even imagined when I started the brand.”

Maxwell was recently at our Green Hills store in Nashville, where he took a moment to talk to us about how he makes women feel so beautiful, his mom and his spring collection—which includes denim for the first time.

Brandon Maxwell

What was your reference point for the Spring ’18 collection? The colors are so beautiful. You also employed a lot of interesting tailoring techniques and embellishments.

The Spring ’18 collection was certainly an evolution for me as a designer and the brand. It was our fifth season and at this point I had a deep understanding as to what makes our customer feel the most beautiful. The brand started with monochromatic evening ensembles, and this collection expanded the wardrobe with the introduction of daywear, denim and accessories, while keeping tailoring at its core. Beyond a great fit, I explored specific tailoring techniques such as pintucking, which sort of looks like these micro-pleats and is all sewn by hand. It is a meticulous process that you don’t often see anymore, but I fell in love with the unique look and the approach.

Why did you want to highlight the relationship between a mother and son (in this case Jourdan Dunn and her son, Riley) for your spring campaign?

Following a week spent alongside Jourdan and Riley in Italy, Jessy (my partner and co-director of the campaign) and I felt compelled to tell their story. During a heartfelt discussion over dinner, Jourdan explained that becoming a mother at 19 as her career was taking off ultimately led to a greater purpose in her life and work. The bond between a mother and a son is one that I know well. I’ve often cited my close relationship with my own mother, the special adventures we had together, and the nights I spent watching her get dressed for formal events as sparking moments in my young imagination. In many ways, this is just as much the story of Jourdan and Riley as it is me and my own mother. Naturally every boy thinks his mother is the most beautiful woman in the world, and Riley is certainly no different.

You introduced some animal embellishments that represent characteristics you admire. Can you tell us about them?

Yes! We had animal embellishments present throughout the collection. Anyone who knows me knows I am obsessed with leopard print. We had leopard jacquard fabrics on a number of pieces. We also had these limited-edition statement earrings we made in collaboration with Lunch at The Ritz by Zander Elliot. The earrings were all different animals which represented attributes that I admire in women: an owl for wisdom, a zebra for individuality and a panther for courage.

Why did you decide to introduce denim this season?

What I have realized in the past few seasons is that women aren’t always going to a black-tie event. Although that would be fabulous, it’s not always practical. Most of the time they still want to look put together in an incredible pair of denim with a beautiful jacket or top. Seeing our women’s response to this new offering of relaxed glamour was inspiring and encouraged me to build upon this concept in the recent Fall/Winter ’18 collection.

Tell us about Jules Buck Jones, the artist whose illustrations appear embroidered in this collection.

Jules Buck Jones is a Texas-based artist who I have been a fan of for a long time—I have a few of his paintings in my home. The giant ball skirt that closed the show had a giant embroidery of a Jules Buck Jones drawing on half of it. To me, the ball skirt is a big nod to the South and Jones’ drawing added an edge of modernity.

You are known for nostalgia in your collections. For instance, the pineapple motif and jewelry in Fall ’18. Can you tell us a little bit about that and its significance to you?

The pineapple was featured frequently in the recent collection. It was embroidered into a number of fabrics on various garments. We had a pineapple and bandana jacquard satin fabric in poppy and black, and my favorite pineapple Swarovski crystal lighter case. The pineapple was the hallmark of my mother’s stationery. On every note, there was always a pineapple on the top. She would use her stationery to write heartfelt notes or express her gratitude, and I always associated that symbol with a sense of grace because of her.

What can’t you leave home without?

Honestly, I wish I had a better answer for this, but I can never leave my home without my phone. I’m constantly in touch with my family, friends and team about the collection, their lives, et cetera. Maintaining my relationships is super important to me. And I can tell you I always leave home without my keys. My poor partner— the grief it has caused! If they could just make keys inside my phone I would be set!

Artist in Residence: Florence Balducci Puts Her Whimsical Touch on Your Morning Coffee Mug

Artist in Residence: Florence Balducci Puts Her Whimsical Touch on Your Morning Coffee Mug post image

Charming and beautifully offbeat, Florence Balducci’s imaginative illustrations are like the fanciful drawings inside a children’s storybook. The Parisian artist’s signature quirky works now appear on Anthropologie monogrammed mugs, which make the perfect companion to your morning coffee.

To celebrate Anthropologie Home’s arrival at Nordstrom, Balducci created an original piece exclusively for us in our Downtown Seattle store. We caught up with the Paris-based artist as she prepared for this installation—an elaborate labor of love–to discuss her artistic process, from inspiration to execution, and how she plans the perfect dinner party around her tableware.

What inspires your illustrations?

Literature, nature, animals, London and my home in Paris—my inspiration comes from everywhere and everything. Also people inspire me: poets, writers, singers, actors and cinema, even science. Reading art books on a terrasse in Paris early in the morning is one of my favorite moments.

Once you are feeling inspired, what comes next?

I’ll start by drawing the real idea—putting my thoughts onto the paper. It’s my favorite part. Then I’ll flip through books to help me build the story, sketch some more ideas and create a mood board. After that, I’ll talk to people, or the brand I’m working with, about the idea before starting on the final drawing. Finally, I draw, always with music on to help me concentrate.

What’s on your playlist?

David Bowie, Lou Doillon, or classical.

Which mug is your favorite?

My favorite mugs are the “A,” the “M” and the “V.” “A” for the humor, “M” for the story, and “V” for the simplicity.

What can you tell me about your upcoming art installation?

The visual is a big red heart where we find some of the illustrations from the mugs all together like flowers, blooming from the top of the heart. I have the idea sketched on paper, now the challenger is to recreate it on canvas!

I understand you like to host dinner parties. Do you think about hosting while designing tableware?

The table is the center of the dinner party and so the first thing I do is think about what I want in the middle my table: a flower, a plant, a sentence, something vintage; a book, a movie—and that’s what inspires my the rest of my choices. It might help me pick the food I cook, or it could dictate what color I choose for dinnerware. After that’s settled, I choose the menu and begin to cook by 5pm, but planning the table is always the first step.

West World: Western Styles Have Us Booting Up This Spring

West World: Western Styles Have Us Booting Up This Spring post image

Spring isn’t usually boot season, but this year we’ll make an exception. There’s a new style in town (cue the swinging saloon doors)—or, really, a rebooted classic that’s showing up in the major fashion cities. Lately, you’d be forgiven for mistaking the streets of Paris, New York and London this Fashion Week for Sweetwater’s dusty trails, with all the cool cowgirl footwear that’s roaming them.

We rustled up some of our favorite Western boots based on street-style looks we spotted. Here are the pairs we’d wear while riding off into the sunset.

Western boots at Fashion WeekWe loved seeing these Western kitten-heeled boots on the streets of Paris. The feminine silhouette and nude hue perfectly pair with pastels. The boot style keeps things from getting too sweet, too girly. Here are a few like looks to wear with your soft colors and skirts.

This punky outfit requires a killer boot, preferably in a lipstick shade. Kick up your heels in a rugged red style that features interesting stitching or a snakeskin print for some dimension. We like how these quietly clash with a plaid pant, but are muted enough not to cause confusion.

Your basic black boot looks fresh in a nouveau Western shape. These steel-toe-tipped Calvin Kleins were about as prevalent as a pair of Wranglers at a rodeo during last Fashion Week. For good reason: they go with everything that’s in your closet already, including jeans and shirtdresses.

Prom Night Beauty: Three Bold Makeup Looks for Your Big Night Out

Prom Night Beauty: Three Bold Makeup Looks for Your Big Night Out post image

The quintessential high school experience and social highlight of the spring semester, prom comes with a lot of pressure. Luckily, we have you covered in the dress category, but what about your makeup?

Be the belle of the ball in one of our easy-to-recreate beauty looks. From ombré lips to metallic eyes, ahead, we give you step-by-step application tips and product recommendations for selfie-approved makeup that won’t melt on the dance floor.

The Hi-Def Lip

  1. Start by applying a layer of bareMinerals tinted gel moisturizer for even hydration and an allover glow.
  2. Achieving flawless and symmetrical winged eyeliner can be a challenge, so move onto eye makeup next and erase mistakes freely without disrupting concealer or highlighter. To get started, swipe a light wash of MAC eyeshadow in Malt over the lids for a one-toned matte base that will set the stage for liner.
  3. To get the perfect cat-eye, start your flick in the outer corner, where the upper and lower lash lines meet, using Stila Stay All Day waterproof liquid liner in black. The wing should follow the natural shape of the lower lash line, extending upward and outward into a neat point. Next, draw a thin line along the upper lash line and merge it with the wing in the outer corner.
  4. Clean up any fallout or eyeliner mistakes before concealing dark circles with RMS Beauty Un Cover-Up. Then, chisel out the cheekbones using Charlotte Tilbury blush in First Love on the blusher brush. Swirl the brush along the outer shade and apply upward along the cheekbone. Dab the brush back into the brighter center shade and pop that color onto the apples of the cheeks before blending the two shades together on the face.
  5. Finish the eye with several coats of Benefit BadGal Bang mascara for voluminous lashes.
  6. Now for the main attraction: To get the gradient lipstick effect, first trace the shape of the lips using MAC Cherry lip pencil. Then, using MAC lipstick in Brave Red, color the lips, starting from the outside edges. Rub the lips together to diffuse texture.
  7. Finally, take MAC lipstick in Full Fuschia and apply only to the center of the top and bottom lip. Using your finger, pat—don’t rub—the edges of the pink color until they are blended seamlessly into your first red coat.

Pack these in your clutch for touch-ups:

MAC lipstick in Brave Red | RMS Beauty Un Cover-Up | MAC lipstick in Full Fuschia

A Nod to the Mod

  1. Cover under-eye circles and redness around the nose and mouth using NARS creamy concealer on a damp beautyblender. For a luminous, airbrushed finish, dust the complexion with Hourglass Ambient Lighting powder in Diffused Light.
  2. Use Benefit Hoola Lite to contour. The cool, grey undertone creates the most natural-looking shadow as it carves out the cheekbones.
  3. Create a base for the dramatic eye using Urban Decay Primer Potion, which will ensure the proceeding colors last all night without smudging.
  4. To get the ’60s-inspired eye, use Charlotte Tilbury eye pencil in Barbarella Brown and a light hand to draw the shape of the arches. The bottom arch should follow the natural crease of the eye while the top arch mimics it just below the brow bone. Then, using the eye blender brush, fill in the arch shape with Charlotte Tilbury cream eyeshadow in Bette. This cream shadow dries fast, so work with just one lid at a time and blend quickly.
  5. To finish the eye and add a pop of color, use the eye pencil in the shade Marlene Midnight to line the lower waterline from corner to corner. Then, coat the lashes with Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes mascara.
  6. Brows should be groomed, but understated. For your most natural-looking, feathered brow, brush upward using Bobbi Brown waterproof brow shaper.
  7. Keep the lips a subtle nude. Using Fresh tinted lip treatment in Honey, your pucker will be hydrated and plump without pulling focus away from your mesmerizing, retro eyes.

Pack these in your clutch for touch-ups:

NARS Radiant creamy concealer | Hourglass Ambient Lighting powder | Fresh Sugar tinted lip treatment in Honey

The Disco Eyes

  1. Applying glitter can be messy, so start with the eyes. Apply NARS Pro Prime eyeshadow base as your adhesive, then pat on Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics glitter in Slate with a dampened Sigma medium sweeper brush, focusing the product on the outer third of the eye and along the upper lash line. It needn’t be perfect, just sparkling.
  2. For an enhanced, glassy finish, add Kevyn Aucoin Cosmic eye gloss over the top of the glitter. Up the intensity of the eye with a small amount of Urban Decay Heavy Metal eyeliner in Glam Rock. Create a thin line across the upper lashes, nestled in the lash line for fuller-looking lashes and added definition. It’s also an easy product to carry with you to touch up glitter on the go.
  3. Finish off the eyes with several coats of Eyeko Black Magic mascara.
  4. Remember, your shine should be coming from your glistening eyes and not your T-zone. For a matte complexion, use your fingers to apply Jouer matte moisture tint and keep oily skin at bay.
  5. Using NARS limited-edition blush in Free Soul, lightly color the apples of the cheeks, brushing upward with the Sigma blush brush for a diffused, modern look.
  6. A creamy nude lipstick will balance your glittering gaze. Julep balmy lip crayon in Apricot Nude has a semigloss finish and is ultra comfortable on the lips. Apply throughout the night as needed.
  7. Match your manicure to your makeup using Deborah Lippmann’s Chantilly Lace shade, building up the sheer polish until you’ve reached your desired pink hue. Then, create a half-moon shape at the cuticle bed using Smith & Cult Glass Souls nail lacquer for DIY nail art.

Pack these in your clutch for touch-ups:

Urban Decay Heavy Metal glitter eyeliner | Julep Beauty It’s Balm lip crayon | Kevyn Aucoin Beauty The Exotique Diamond eye gloss
