At their very own English garden party, Gerrie and Zack tied the knot during a summertime ceremony that told their singularly Seattle story, surrounded by friends and family.
Gerrie, tell us about the location.
We were so lucky to celebrate at venues that embody exactly what we wanted our wedding to be: personal. I grew up in the Broadview neighborhood of North Seattle, and my dad stumbled upon the historic Dunn Gardens on a walk. It has the charm, transcendence and beauty of a European garden, yet still felt like my own backyard. I also attended high school at Holy Names, where we were married in a Catholic ceremony.
What was the theme or inspiration?
We are both traditional and classic in terms of style. Inspired by our venue, we wanted an English garden party with Seattle undertones. We selected a neutral palette (all creams and whites) with pops of greenery and hints of gold in the flatware and tapered candles. We also wanted as many subtle Seattle details we could slip in, so we incorporated blush tones through glassybaby votives, Rainier cherries from the Pike Place Market and monograms galore—from menus, to cocktail napkins, to our welcome table.
Tell us about your favorite moment.
During our ceremony, we exchanged both traditional vows and wrote our own. Reciting Catholic vows that are valued in both of our families, while also highlighting promises unique to our relationship, was truly special. Puget Sound Strings played a beautiful interlude of “Your Song” by Elton John, which was especially romantic. Then, during the dance party, we had Dick’s Drive-In burgers brought in for everyone! It was a major hit! (The bride may have eaten two.)
How did you know your dress was the one?
I went into the experience having no idea what I wanted, other than to wear ivory and have a clean, sleek fabric. My favorite wedding dress of all time is Carolyn Bessette’s. Using that image for inspiration, my Nordstrom stylist had a beautiful dress by Amsale ready at my first appointment; it was the first dress I tried on and I knew right away. The style is called Darcy and it was fitted down to the floor, hugged in the right places and was the exact understated classic dress I always envisioned myself wearing.
To add some glamor to its simplicity, my stylist helped me find a cathedral-length veil and navy satin Manolo Blahnik Hangisi pumps to add some sparkle (and something blue!). I loved the traditional feel of matching bridesmaids to the bride, so we selected the exact shade of ivory in cocktail-length Alfred Sung dresses in various styles. My last great Nordstrom find came from an unanticipated browse at the Designer Finale Sale: I found the perfect black Miu Miu low block heel so I didn’t kill my feet on the dance floor, which also matched the black-and-white tile!
Any advice for brides-to-be?
Every couple will have different priorities and connections to the wedding process. Instead of trying to focus on everything, focus on what is important to you and your story. Elevating those elements will make it much more special and memorable to both you and your guests.
Make sure to relish in the time versus stressing about the details! It is a lead-up to the most important decision you will ever make and you won’t get that time in your life back. And don’t forget to eat cake during the reception!
Where was the honeymoon?
We left right after for Paris and the Greek islands of Santorini and Mykonos.
