When the invitations to merriment arrive, our minds quickly turn to what to wear. And most holidays we’re not dressing for a single party but for three or four or five. Planning party wear can be preoccupying—and pretty fun.
To give us a jump-start this season, we’ve put together nine looks for three different types of affairs. Whether we’re chilling with our girls, celebrating with office mates or sipping cocktails at the in-laws’, we always look as festive as an (extremely fashionable) elf. Here are our tips, plus seasonal inspiration and shoppable styles, all wrapped up in a pretty package. (It’s OK if you didn’t get us anything.)
CHRISTMAS COCKTAILS

When the invite says cocktails, you definitely want to step up the sparkle. (Varying degrees of shine are the key to holiday dressing, we’ve discovered.) This season, we’re loving metallic fabrics and twinkly embellishments as a way to integrate festive touches. This Alice + Olivia dress is a stellar party frock with its fascinating Renaissance-pattern beading on a modern silhouette. Paired with elevated platforms (that are also comfortable), this is a look we can wear all evening and into the night.

Given the potentially chilly temps, pants are always a good option for holiday parties. Don’t worry about looking too casual. Just choose a vibrant trouser shade to pair with a fun top, like this gold ruffle blouse. Appliqué and embroidered accessories add decorative details to achieve a fully turned-out outfit.
AN OFFICE FETE

Luxe fabrics and subtle shine work for professional holiday events. Skip sexy or overly sparkly garb. Instead, go for rich colors and textures that easily exude warmth and bonhomie. Jewel-toned blouses—like this Topshop jacquard top—are perfect for business-turned-pleasure affairs. An interesting skirt and fun shoes complete the polished-from-head-to-toe look.
Tibi stretch velvet turtleneck | noir kei ninomiya tulle midi skirt | Sam Edelman Olette pointy toe bootie
Colorful and fun accessories are completely work-party appropriate. Inject playful elements into your outfit with unique flourishes like feather earrings or shocking pink boots—not only will you get noticed, but you’ll also collect compliments.

A HOLIDAY HANG
Even when we’re having a laid-back night with our pals, we still want to be Instagram ready. Comfy clothes like an oversized sweatshirt or stretchy dress look casually cool with the right bright accessories.

Hosiery in a cheery accent hue is an easy way to up the wattage of your winter attire. Paired with the season’s stark white footwear, colorful stockings make your getup even more wavy.
