On the Red Carpet at the 2016 Tony Awards with Nordstrom

Although tragedy tinged the 70th annual Tony Awards, nominees, guests and presenters wore undaunted joy and unity during the night’s celebration of art and community, dedicated to the victims in Orlando. Host James Corden opened the show with a musical number that referenced theater’s appeal to kids “of every color, class and race and face and shape and size. To boys and girls and transgenders, too. To every Broadway would-be.”

Hamilton won 11 awards–an expected rout. The musical based on founding father Alexander Hamilton’s contributions to establishing American democratic politics was a deserving recipient of praise from presenters Barack and Michelle Obama, Common and Barbara Streisand, who returned to the Tony stage for the first time since 1970. These distinguished appearances and the content of the Lin-Manuel Miranda’s sweepingly inventive musical were a reminder of the importance of art in American culture, theater’s significance to the LGBT community and the heritage of a country experienced in strife but built on the inclusiveness of its people.

Nordstrom, an official red-carpet sponsor of the night, set up a photo booth on the red carpet at the Beacon Theatre, inviting attendees to get goofy. Celebrities like Lupita Nyong’o, Allison Williams and Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator and star of Hamilton, willingly mugged for our camera.

Hamilton‘s creator and star, Lin-Manuel Miranda, won awards for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical for his clever lyrics and story. Miranda recited a sonnet on stage for the victims in Orlando. His words culminated in, “Now fill the world with music, love and pride.”

Guests took liberties with fashion, branching out into vibrant styles and patterns. Canary, marigold and other shades of cheery yellow were popular on a bevy of Broadway actresses.

Cate Blanchett, Cynthia Erivo, Jessica Lange, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and more in some of our favorite looks of the night.
