My mom raised me to be punctual to a fault. If I’m not right on time, it’s because I was there early. When I got to the strikingly modern UNESCO building for the Loewe show bright and early on Friday morning, I was glad of the habit.
Everything in the stone-and-concrete sculpture and seating area was shrinkwrapped, and the entire courtyard was covered too, casting a gorgeous and surreal light over the whole area that bounced off the trees and architecture around us. Ideal for viewing bright shoulder bags and impeccably built and inventive carryalls—as well as neoclassic shoes and ultra-cool ready-to-wear and accessories.
Actually, the models were covered in cellophane too. The first two looks featured the material very prominently, and you did sort of have to wonder how a pair of cling-wrapped pants would feel.
The clear covering became a more subtle interest point from there as poppy natural-world references, silvery tones, cool neutrals and bright whites and pastels took over.
The 170-year-old Spanish brand is under the creation direction of Jonathan Anderson, who you might also know as J.W.Anderson. The young London-based designer is known for an uncanny knack of bringing playful vibes to sophisticated tailoring and materials. The legacy of leather crafts is deeply rooted at the brand—their handbags are brilliant pieces of design, engineering and handwork.
The spring collection—Anderson’s third for Loewe—makes it clear that this combination of cheeky British youthfulness and luxurious tradition is a potent one.
Under the Loewe name, in the light of the world’s leading advocates for peace and human rights, spring looks like a hyper-modernized and highly idealized place to be.
