Pop-In Power Girls: Gabriele Tise from Salvaged Skateboards Is Our Favorite Thrasher

Yeah, Girl. The Nike Women’s Pop-In@Nordstrom is all about beholding the ultimate awesomeness of the female species. In this series we’re talking to a posse of women who do their best every day to exude power—whether that means stealthily scoring a soccer goal, cracking some killer code, evoking new ideas in art or just being there for someone who really needs them.  And maybe all of the above.

Anyone know what a vacuum bag system is? How about bent lamination? Raise your hand if you have any clue how to build a skateboard, much less a home? Up in Kennebunk, Maine, Gabriele Tise is the kind of woman who enters a custom architectural millwork shop, takes a woodworking tool in her hand and immediately imagines an artisan skate deck made of repurposed maple, mahogany and other exotic woods. And then starts building the systems to launch her own collection of them. By day, Tise works for Bowley Builders; by night, she grows her own business, Salvaged Skateboards. And by weekend—especially in the mud season—she hikes the White Mountains. Color us inspired.

The Thread: What’s your favorite workout class or studio?
Gabriele Tise: When I have to workout indoors, I spin. There’s a great spot in the mill building next door to my studio/wood shop in Rollinsford, New Hampshire, called Velocity. It’s the right kind of intense workout for me, and I go right back to my shop after class fully energized!

Favorite way to be active when you’re with a group of friends:
I’m always looking for a friend to go hiking with!

Favorite way to be active when you’re alone:
I like to get out on my bike. There are a couple of loops I like to ride by my house that are a mix of dirt and tar roads.

What’s a better workout: Hiking or skating?
I’m sure you get your heart rate up there during a killer skate session, but I like to relax and cruise on my longboard. Mostly, I ride to grab a coffee. So, I’d have to say hiking. That’s when I really push myself.

What do the words “girl power” mean to you?
When you realize your own strength. And don’t let anything come between you and your goals.

Tell us about a time when someone showed you radical kindness.
Hiking the Long Trail last fall, there was no shortage of Vermonters willing to pick up two sweaty hikers with a dog! We actually had one woman circle around town to find us after she overheard the Post Office clerk tell us our mail drop package was waiting for us at a different post office! She definitely went out of her way to help us. That was very kind!

Tell us about a time when you were able to pass along kindness to someone else.
This weekend I’m finishing up two skateboards that I made for a friend of mine who opened up a retail store this year in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She has supported the Salvaged Skateboards endeavor along the way. I had another friend custom screenprint her store’s logo on it. It’s a surprise, and I think she’ll be stoked. The store is a great accomplishment for her, too!

Who inspires you to challenge yourself and be the best you can be?
I have three nieces who are all juniors in high school. Probably them. They keep getting smarter and more independent, and I want them to keep being able to look up to me.

We all have that favorite quote or those words of wisdom that we pull out when we need them. What’s yours?
My mother has a fridge magnet with the Winston Churchill quote, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” I think that’s a good one. It’s the right attitude to have, I think.
