Benjamin Booker is doing all right. The New Orleans-based musician hasn’t even dropped his first full-length record and he’s already garnered accolades from both the mainstream and indie music press, he’s performing at bunch of festivals this summer, include the granddaddy of them all—Lollapalooza—AND he’s opening for Jack White on a handful of (mostly sold-out) U.S. dates in August.
Of course, once you take a listen, you get what all the fuss is about.
First there’s that voice. Ragged and emotive, it sounds like it’s been seasoned by multiple decades of late nights and hard living, yet Booker is just 22. Combine that with gut-punching garage rock beats and Booker’s deft blues-rock guitar riffs and, well, let’s just say that all that fuss is well-deserved.
Benjamin Booker’s self-titled debut album is out August 19, and he’s touring the U.S. and Europe for pretty much the rest of the year.
